From: Enabran Templar Such a keen and intense curiosity! I can't imagine the motivation. Well, then, Flipper, let's hear it. Tell us all about it. While you're at it, let's hear boxers or briefs, top or bottom, latex or polyurathane, Crispix or Cracklin' Oat Bran and... for bonus points, let's get an accounting of every five minutes of your activities today, starting from this morning when you awoke. And... Go. This should be a poll. And for my money, Cracklin' Oat Bran.

From: Cocoanut Cookie OK, so it is not an official Linden thing - it sounds more like if I decided to donate to the Red Cross, and to Unicef, or whatever, because I consider them worthy causes. So - LL gives money to projects they like. Except it's not always an outside thing they have an interest in, such as the State of Play conference, but also sometimes something limited pretty much to SL, such as a group of residents getting together in the SLCC or a group of residents in a Sim, such as Neualtenberg? And the fellowship thing seems to be a pretty straightforward fellowship thing. If it isn't an official LL thing, it is definitely something that is the LL promoted thing. Sponsored, and supported thing. And the only such thing which can be posted in General as far as I can tell. So, did you get LL funds to put on this conference this year? Last year? coco
What's your point, Coco... it certainly seems you're digging for ammo here. ... !!!

Wow, such an amazing response already; we're approaching 100 registrations within just a few days! This year is really going to rock. Thank you all for such kind words and enthusiasm - August can't get her soon enough, eh?
Coco: I don't think there's any harm in transparency here, so I'll answer your query. As a sponsor, just like any of our others sponsors, there is a financial component to Linden Lab's support. Renting a place like the Fort Mason Center is not cheap, especially when you consider catering needs for the weekend and so forth. The cost of admission to the convention is actually quite a bit less than what it costs us for each butt in a seat for the course of the weekend, so I'm dead serious when I say this couldn't happen without our generous sponsors. Last year, the Linden Lab sponsorship included a financial component, the extremely generous gift of the necklaces for registrants, promotional help (they do control a lot of the promotional possibilities held within the SL client), and most importantly, lots of Linden time. It is similar again this year.
We have a very clear spreadsheet for sponsorship, and what each sponsorship tier entails. For example, the number of complimentary passes for the sponsor, the size of the banner to be hung, and the presence at the in-world portion of the convention are all related to sponsorship tier. If you're really interested, I'd be happy to send you a copy of the sponsorship materials; its public information.
Once again, I'd like to thank our sponsors on board thus far: Linden Lab, The Electric Sheep Company, Luskwood, Nomine, and our latest sponsor, NinjaWeasel Studios! We couldn't do it without the generous support of these sponsors, and I'd like to add on a personal note that they are all wonderful pillars of our community.
Regards,
-Flip

From: Newfie Pendragon I'm in agreement that I wouldn't call the event an official Linden event, though I could see how easy one could assume the convention was something it's not.
Sorta like how the word 'Community' in SLCC has no meaning either.
- Newfie Wanna know a secret? While "community" was loosely the theme of last years convention, the reason the convention was titled Second Life Community Convention was because it sounded better than SL User Convention or SL Resident Convention. If you wanna argue semantics we can also deconstruct the difference between the use of the word convention versus the use of the word conference. In essence, to maintain brand identity and since everyone just refers to it as the SLCC anyways we kept it that. Feel free to suggest any appropriate C words that could be used to replace the gross inadequate use of the word community. -Jennyfur

If you're really interested, I'd be happy to send you a copy of the sponsorship materials; its public information. Regards, -Flip Thanks for the explanation, Flipper. No, no harm in transparency, either here, or regarding practically anything else; usually much more harm in secrecy, especially unnecessary secrecy (which most secrecy is). Yes, I would like to get a copy of the sponsorship materials! Sounds very impressive so far! Very well worked out. And definitely not an official Linden thing. (Though with the banners and all, they definitely better be the main sponsor; it would be embarassing to be out-bannered by someone else!) I wonder if they will give out little gifts again this year? I loved the gift of the necklaces. I wonder if they do, what it will be. Maybe the same thing, since fewer were there to get the necklaces last year. I hope you succeed in filling all 500 or whatever places. Since it's not till August, seems you have a good chance of doing that. Tempting though it is, I won't be there, not this year anyway. Maybe someday. Juro, I read it as "affairs", too. Yes, Enabran, I do have a keen and intense curiosity, and there is no motivation, other than interest, involvement, and a desire to learn. Depending on what I learn, there may be motivation to move further (possibly, in this instance, in ways you would not like). A keen and intense curiosity is a natural outcome of several factors: innate intelligence, scientific academic training, being a journalist, being a teacher - and probably several other factors as well. Curiosity is a good thing, a prerequisite for any scientific or journalistic endeavor, and the only way to learn and develop in an open-minded way throughout life. It is something that any teacher would hope to encourage in others, not belittle. Only on the SL forums have I ever run into such resistance to - and belittlement and suspicion of - asking questions. It seems to be out of fear, really. You are afraid I might do something about what I have learned, and you would be right, if I felt something needed to be done. But none of us can progress if people are afraid to ask questions. You have zero hope of ever trying to shame me from asking them, bully me from asking them, or make me afraid to ask them, by repeatedly casting personal aspersions. Deal with it. coco

Maybe the same thing, since fewer were there to get the necklaces last year. If you could send me a private message with your email address, I'll email them along to you. Rivers Run Red did a great job with the logo design for us, so I'm proud of everything we send out now, hehehe. There is something in the works gift-wise that should be cool, but I don't want to say anything until its officially worked out. Jake: I'm glad to hear you're coming! It'll be good to hang out again. My attorney (who's done a bunch of contracts related to SL for me) really wanted to come and hang with some of the "SL Attorneys" I've told him about, alas, his wife is due a few days after SLCC so he can't make it this year. He's kind of bummed about it! Regards, -Flip

Knowing that very few of my in-world friends come to the forums -- but may, in fact, be interested in attending the SLCC 2006 -- I'm wondering if you've created any kind of a notecard/information vendor or poster. If so, I'd be most delighted to have one on display at my club.
Lemme know!

Lemme know! We do have an in-world kiosk and notecard, as well as a web site ( www.SLConvention.com), an ad in the Metaverse Messenger, and hopefully more will be coming shortly! Feel free to IM me in world if you'd like a kiosk or a notecard. Regards, -Flip
