The stars, the inworld ratings, and the Whuffie system are similarly flawed. I think they are useless beyond entertainment value. In other words, the best thing about them is that they do provide something to discuss here on the forums. That's not valueless; many people read forums (these and others) for "mere" entetainment and to enjoy it as they'd enjoy watching their daily soap opera or sitcom.

The forums "belong" to *all* these folks: those into serious discourse, those involved in "drama", and those who say "I find this thread hilarious" while posting pictures of pandas banging each other while demanding pie.

There's, of course, sometimes a rift between those who enjoy the drama and take the forums lightly, and those who do not. This is mirrored by the rift between those who are upset about the star system in one way or another, and those who make joking comments about it and find the whole thing amusing. Part of the problem is when some people don't realize it's usually (for example) the star system and forum dynamics being mocked, not them as people. Of course, when this happens, there's more drama and entertainment than ever! If anyone "wins" at the forums, I think it's the people who dont take them too personally. (Note that I said "personally", not "seriously.";)

Anyway, this is my serious opinion, yet I find this (especially this self-referential bit) very amusing.

For clarification, it was *after* this thread was moved that a discussion began on the ResMod forum about what should be considered Off-Topic and what should stay in General. From that discussion came the allowance of Meta-Discussions to be able to stay in the SL General forum.
bah! this whole meta-discussion distinction is bogus.
