Well "freedom of speech" is not the freedom to say stupid things. A well used example of this is it is illegal to shout "fire" in a crowded theater or other such thing that might get people hurt. Also stupid jokes at airports or on planes.

Rama I say he has to actually do some research on a subject he is sprouting on so no helping him :P

Yes civil rights apply across the board in the U.S. From reading what you typed, (just to be sure i hadn't gotten it wrong) you attempted to say the U.S. civil rights do not apply to private businesses just to the goverment agencies. I stated to you that is incorrect.
So now you want to talk about freedoom of speech?
you like me don't u :D

But freedoom of speech is a constitutional right.

Which doesn't apply in SL as it is a privately owned venue. :)

So Linden Labs, as an American company, can't abridge this right? Just like they can't tell black people that they can't use the service. Is that correct?

Yep. The government can't stop speech as long as it doesn't incite (basically), but private businesses and citizens have no compunction to provide you with a soapbox. A store can kick you out and refuse service for saying certain words, and Linden Labs can keep things from being said on their service.

Well, over here it's a cylindrical object made from shiny coloured paper and cardboard, with flares at both ends, and when two people pull it, it makes a cracking sound, and drops out a cheap toy and usually a weird motto.

If someone called me one of those I would be bemused rather than insulted.

and over here its a colorful rectangle box standing about 10x3x3 inches
containing yummy little edibles called Wheat Thins

and if someone called me that id consider it a compliment =)

Why should intolerance in the form of music be allowed, but not allowed in chat?

I make a distinction between intolerance and abuse. I.e. intolerance would be "I hate big-nosed Jews." Abuse would be "Fuck off, you big-nosed Jew."

Ah, seems like another case of someone with Ass-to-Brain Symbiosis Syndrome (ASS), a psychological condition in which a relationship of mutual dependence is created between the intellectual components of the cerebrum and the refuse-generating faculties of the anus. When one suffers from such a condition their thoughts are filtered through the anus, returned in an altered state to the brain and expelled through the mouth.

Nasty little thing.

Smerk, I think you'll find that this issue will disappear as the existence of your sim and all content within in are protected under SL/LL's own Community Standards.

From: someone
Community Standards:
5. Indecency

Second Life is an adult community, but Mature material is not necessarily appropriate in all areas (see Global Standards below). Content, communication, or behavior which involves intense language or expletives, nudity or sexual content, the depiction of sex or violence, or anything else broadly offensive must be contained within private land in areas rated Mature (M). Names of Residents, objects, places and groups are broadly viewable in Second Life directories and on the Second Life website, and must adhere to PG guidelines.

Your sim is private and mature. End of story.

I think the Live Helper you initially spoke with also suffers from the condition described above.

Personally, if it were me confronted with an issue like this that wouldn't go away I would write a letter and mail it to LL, address it to Philip Rosedale (Founder and CEO), Robin Harper (VP Community Development and Support) and the Board of Directors outlining the benefits of the sim (promoting and encouraging content creation which leads to community growth, word of mouth advertising in RL and SL, and ultimate profitability for the company, etc. -- all this being done on user's free and volunteer time) as well as the amount of personal funds invested in the sim and SL in general (account fee, sim ownership fee) and the amount of RL/SL dollars your sim contributes to the SL economy and LL's profitability (including a projected amount of money used to upload the sim backdrop, buildings and all products sold within).

Now, imagine if 10 sim owners under the threat or private sim censorship closed their sims. What impact would that have on the SL economy and LL (and their shareholders?)?

I would also use a lot of the rational points brought up by other users in this thread:

Mocha Jackson: "If you're offended by the music that's playing on a PRIVATE and MATURE sim, you have the option of: 1. Turning your music off, 2. Not entering a sim marked MATURE, 3. Leaving."

Garicho Fatale: "What is the difference between uncensored rap music and ppl that have porn movies on their sim?[/b]

Logan Bauer: "So you can graphically act out sex in any mature area, stream porn, put up pictures of graphic sex acts, but the words used to describe the graphic sex act cannot be broadcast, hell, not even hosted or broadcasted through LL's servers but basically 'pointed at'???"[/font]

And Madame Maracas's point international server re-hosting.

Good luck.

Now, I'm really confused. Someone earlier said that private businesses in the U.S. can't abridge people's civil rights just because they're private businesses. Now people are saying that they can.

Maybe U.S. laws just don't make much sense.

They can't do it because of your skin color, sex, etc.

If you are a PETA protestor from across the street, they -can- refuse to serve you at the Subway or sub shop.

If you cause a scene by starting a fight, they can refuse to sell you beer at a bar, or food at a restaurant, and ask you to leave.

They can even have the cops remove you.

They just can't do it based on federally protected descrimination factors.
