Content Creator Union

Times are very much changing in Second Life and residents must learn to adapt to the new climate that is developing. Some individual users currently enjoy a level of clout and influence though considerable landholdings and personal wealth. This influence is largely unavailable to the individual content creator.

In hopes of securing equal benefits, I would like to float the idea of a Content Creator Union. This is just an initial poll intended to get a feel for how such an idea would be recieved by content creators and non content creators.

Some possible goals of a Content Creator Union may include:

- Organizing and combining our voices, in hopes of affecting policy change with equal clout as the landowners.

- Sharing the cost of promotional and persuasive advertisements in the Metaverse Messenger, SL Herald, and other media outlets.

- If deemed necessary, sharing the legal fees if an attorney is needed to investigate, advise, or pursue legal action on behalf of the Content Creator Community.

- Finally, in extreme cases, a Content Creator Union could "strike" by placing all content and sale items in their inventory, shutting down their own third party server products (such as Snapzilla,) and by refusing to provide goods and services to the grid.

I know this may not yet be the time for such an agressive move. I'm not expecting overwhelming support for this idea. But I think this thread will serve as a good first step and a foundation for future efforts of Content Creators to organize.

As the head of the Artist's Guild in Neualtenburg, which is essentially a labor union --I'm all for it. Count me in!

Union! Union! Union!

Yeh let's all segregate and pigeon hole ourselves. This all sounds too familiar, but from a different angle to me.

I would be very interested in organizing to lobby for backup capability of content.

I'm in. Taken together, our voice would be strong indeed. It's a shame we have to even think about such measures, but I think this is the best opportunity we have to be given the same benefits afforded land people.

So where do those who have a high tier, do not create content, but get none of said benefits fit in?

I'll join!

Obviously, not from the same motivation as inspired you to create this union reparations for telehub land owners - as I think that was a good thing. Nor would I vote for such things as reparations for every bit of inventory loss someone says the suffered (cause how can you prove it?).

And other such disagreements.

But, I think the idea of a union is terrific! Besides lobbying for back-up capability for content, we could throw our combined weight behind getting various build bugs resolved.

And a fix for my biggest pet peeve - a way to cut roofs!

Just last night I was thinking that for something that is supposedly on the cutting edge of creating content in computer environments, it surely is sucky how tedious it is to do so. The reason I was thinking this is I was jostling to get a piece of wall in place just right last night, and I found myself thinking, "You know, there ought to be a computer to make this easier," and more automatically exact. Then I thought - how ironic!

Your land rentals are your content - you receive payment for them, yes?

OK I see what you mean. But read the posts, this is about a content creators union to aim for getting the same 'voice' that land owners have.

I don't belong to unions in real life either. That weight, Coco, gets thrown around by the people who operate the union (do the work). That's as it should be. But I'm not foolish enough to join a union, when I don't have time to devote to it's operation, then expect them to magically represent my opinions and needs. That's a foolish trap that has cost many people their jobs or benefits.

Nah, the idea fills me with dread to be honest. I'm a content creator (hi Lynn!) but I really don't see the need for a union, especially as what's classed as content is so wide in the skills, requirements and needs in production of it that I see it as being very difficult to bring that all together as a "union" and have anything other than a fractured voice.

Yeh that's cool, I just find the whole land owner vs content creator thing counter productive and ridiculous. I felt that way when it was approached from the other side of the fence, I feel the same now.

Truthfully, I don't know how much I would really gain from it. Then again, it doesn't hurt and it may help. For anyone ready to pounce the FIC II, this is a union meaning almost anyone can join but in doing so must respect the union rules.

I'm for it.

You do bring up a great point that we would have to define exactly who a Content Creator Union would support.

In many ways I think the nature of the issues presented and voted on would cause members to decide for themselves if they even want to be members. For example, a Content Creators Union my very well allow landlords to join. But would landlords be willing to participate in a one-week boycott of SL in hopes of obtaining reparations for lost sale content? At some point members are likely to decide they would be better off in a different organization that targets THEIR needs.

I chose other, cause for right now I'm undecided. I'm an ex-content creator and considering making stuff in the near future. I'm very cautious about the Union idea. Right now, I don't feel its necessary and its seems like its an idea that is skirting the government control that most of us oppose.

After soundly ridiculing earlier special interest lobbying efforts I can't in good conscience support this. Sorry :)
