MadamG, this kitty can't wait until your browser is released! It looks great and I like SL enough to want to use because of it's SL specific features. Ignore the haters.

How bout a link to all bookmarks tagged on del.icio.us with the tag "Second Life"? It's a good way to keep tabs on the SL web-o-sphere

The fact that she said "Firefox" repeatedly in quotes seemed to indicate she had never heard of it before. Perhaps I am wrong.

I apologize to MadamG for coming across as trolling, it wasn't my original intent in replying, so I'll rephrase:

Can you explain the benefits your browser offers over using standard IE/FireFox/Opera/Safari/Etc? Is it faster by virtue of being lighter in functionality? Does it use less resources giving more room for Second Life's own demands? Other than ghosting does it offer other features unique to web browsers? It's creative and unique, but what compels someone to keep using it over a traditional browser? Are there features that are planned before it's released as a finished product that would fall under this criteria? Prior to building this, did you consider instead building an extension to IE/FireFox/Opera with this functionality along with a skin, and what made you choose this route if so?

Karsten,

My intention was not to exceed the features of any current browser or to develop any "New Technology". This is not a product that I plan on marketing to any major corporations or that I even thought would cause such a commotion.

I will tell you what I told Linden Labs. I am hoping that use of the browser will promote commerce and community involvement with the user-friendly interface.

I did not create it to make a new browser per say, but to make something for the SL community. However, if those who decide that they like it and use it request certain features, I would be happy to do my best to add them. I had a lot of ideas about what I could include but wanted to keep it simple so as not to take away from my goal....

I accept your apology with open arms...you don't see too many of them here. LOL

YAY...another suggestion! (That IS what I created this thread for, right??)
Thanks for that Satchmo, and I will be sure to use your suggestion. Perhaps I will need to make a drop down menu to accomodate the large number of additional sites...or even better categorized drop down menus.

Agreed, I am not sure why she is being flamed, it is very disconcerting to see. :(

Crazy-ass shit.

But you know what, Cristiano? I am going to take a stab in the dark and say that the people flaming her use Second Life through some bizarre, convoluted arrangement of *nix, WINE and specially-arranged goat entrails. Probably read Slashdot with only the *nix articles turned on and nothing else.

Come on. Amirite? Amirite here?

It would explain everything.

MadamG - looks very nice - I'm sure there will be folks out there that find it usefull.

Whenever you try and do something that you think is cool and/or worthwhile you'll always find a group of folks that will bitch... Just put em on the backburner and ignore them - if they were such hot-shit, they would have done it themselves already.

In Karsten's case, I believe that's accurate. Well, I don't think he actually uses goat entrails, but I know he strongly supports *nix.

Dude - I'm a huge Linux advocate and have been for many years - if it wasn't for running SL I would only be using Windows for freelance editing.

I've also played around getting SL to run through WINE too...

Also if not for SlashDot I wouldn't have heard about the 'Tax Revolt' - and probably wouldn't have taken that break from coding that fateful day long ago..

Don't lump us all together like that.. People can be asses irrespective of OS choices..

A fair enough answer, and I do think your browser looks very nice, as I said originally, I just don't see it as being commercially viable, so to speak, without more to offer. I have a WinXP machine sitting next to my laptop that I would probably install it on, go 'ooh, shiny.' and then sigh and shut it down when I didn't have all the normal browsing capabilities that I was used to from other browsers.

Some SL-specific ideas for future development:

- Find out from LL if there's a way for you to include 'Friends Online' directly into your browser somehow. Additionally, make a way for players to assign 'buddy icons' by name to friends, so that the buddy icon shows up in this embedded friends list, either instead of or along with the name. It would be charming to open your browser and see a bar on one side that had snapshots of your friends that were online.

- Using the map API recently published by LL, an embedded world map that opens in it's own tab with some special buttons that let players thumbtack and label spots (maybe with expandable notes?) on the map, that the browser remembers until deleted. Let them be able to click on these and using the secondlife://region/x/y/z protocol to teleport there.

- Maybe show current number of users in-world in the statusbar? Again, something to ask LL about.

That's all I've got for the moment.

Elk entrails, they're far superior. And I never read slashdot.

Great ideas! The thing with the friends list is that you have to be sure that you are logged in to SL to show it. Right now there IS a button to the left that goes directly to friends online. I have stated to LL that the browser would be non-intrusive to SL residents. Therefore not collecting any data that would comprimise your SL identity while using the browser. So as I am able to add more features and communicate with LL, this may be a possibility.

I love the Map functionality that you are suggesting! I think I may start smaller for now and host links to various locations in SL via dropdown menu or using another embedded browser.

Great ideas though...now all on my to-do list ;) Hugz

even though i've read this entire thread, i'll be replying (mainly) to the original post.

before i do that though, i would like to mention that all the ideas presented to you, MadamG, would all be great additions to the browser!

as far as the core topic goes, i have to say.. i'm significantly impressed! what a wonderful new app for SLers! now we can ALL be FIC-prone compared to the rest of the unitiated world of non-SLers.. lol. (ugh.. i can't believe i mentioned "FIC";)

anyhoo, i simply MUST suggest that if you offer skins at all.. there really should be a Torley Linden skin! in all it's watermelonly goodness! :D

besides that, i think the "ghosting" ability is a revolutionary addition to a browser.. i could be wrong, but i don't know of any other browser that offers that function!

and for one more suggestion.. what about a built in function to allow the streaming of any SL "radio station" through the browser? perhaps including a list of either available stations, favorties, or both?

kudos on this.. it's awesome! i can't wait until a final release so i can show it off to all my RL friends! :D

Just an FYI that I have been in touch with MadameG through PM (as the original posting of this announcement was in a no-reply forum) and I'm happy to say that she has agreed to include the M2 website as one of the site buttons on her browser.

:)

Thanks for that browser extension and making a cool add on to SL :) !

Don't take all the negative comments too much to heart. Thanks for a useful, well designed new tool.

The people coming out at you are waging a religious war aginst Microsoft and anyone who would dare bring computing out of the high priesthood of what they believe are "real coders" (btw REAL "real coders" have nothing to do with that bunch they can be gracious, efficient and show social skills).

You're caught in the crossfire. Don't mind them. Until they provide something better than what you've made their remarks are irrelevant.

Kudos for your hard work and design skill :).

From the Star Chamber home page.

PS - just teasing, it has not been released yet - she was soliciting feedback. My lord, did she get feedback. Talk about being careful what you wish for.

Oh, okay, that's totally different.

But something's not right. How can someone develop software, if he/she doesn't even know what the basic technical terms mean? Who doesn't know what's a 'component'. Or COM. Or anything technical?

I wonder if the program is written in Visual Basic?

PS: It's still a nice job, I admit, but I fear the programmers who don't know what they have created. (One day it might be Frankenstein, lol :-)

Who said that I do not know what these terms mean? Where did you get this misinformation? Are you confusing this thread with another?

Geez, I'm gonna go take a shower... I need to wash the troll slime off of my face. Maybe I should call an ambulance first to see if the paramedics can get the knife out of my back. Wouldn't want to get soap in the open wound.

Hello and Happy New Year!

I would like to introduce you to the Second Life Power Community Browser ! It has been created with the SL fanatic and serious merchants in mind. It gives you one click access to popular Second Life website areas such as the forums, market trends, and grid status while giving you the flexibility of a standard web browser (favorites, address bar, etc.). It even uses tabs so you can keep all those web pages open in one neat browser!

Before releasing it, I would like input from the community as to which 3rd party/fan sites are most important to you. I have used to most obvious sites for the toolbar initially, but your opinion matters as well.

Listed in order are:
Second Life Website
SL Exchange
SL Boutique
SL Universe
Anshe Chung Website
IGE Website
PayPal

At this time, development is limited to Windows based platforms.
Thanks for looking and thanks for your input!
