PLEASE NOTE: I have stopped reading and responding to this thread because it has become a flaming arena between SL Members. This thread is full of assumptions and false statements. I have notified moderators and requested that this thread be locked. After reading my first post if you have any feedback for me (be it good or bad), please PM me using this message board or IM me in world. Otherwise, I will not see your comments if you choose to particiate in the flame war. I'll be sure to respond to every message as soon as I can. I just don't have the time to sort through all these posts to find the suggestions anymore. I hope you can understand. I appreciate all the words of encouragement, constructive critism, and suggestions. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ORIGINAL MESSAGE: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hello and Happy New Year! I would like to introduce you to the Second Life Power Community Browser ! It has been created with the SL fanatic and serious merchants in mind. It gives you one click access to popular Second Life website areas such as the forums, market trends, and grid status while giving you the flexibility of a standard web browser (favorites, address bar, etc.). It even uses tabs so you can keep all those web pages open in one neat browser! Before releasing it, I would like input from the community as to which 3rd party/fan sites are most important to you. I have used to most obvious sites for the toolbar initially, but your opinion matters as well.
Listed in order are: Second Life Website SL Exchange SL Boutique SL Universe Anshe Chung Website IGE Website PayPal At this time, development is limited to Windows based platforms. Thanks for looking and thanks for your input! Original Post: /invalid_link.html

Wow, this looks great, thankyou for creating this. I especially like the transparency feature so I won't accidentally ignore people speaking to me etc, whilst browsing.
Now if only you could make the scripting window partially transparent... Hmm...

Out of curiosity, why did you include all the major retail SL websites except for SecondServer.net?

From: Karsten Rutledge FireFox with a custom skin, No it's not "Firefox" I have never used "Firefox" never seen "Firefox" but I will check it out thanks. I developed this browser from square one, but I appreciate you posting. ...skins? Sounds like something I will put on my to-do list. Thanks for that idea! From: Karsten Rutledge only not as powerful. Sorry I am not living up to your standards. I have not been doing this for too long, maybe a year but I think that what I have so far is pretty impressive. I am not sure what you call "Powerful", but that is not what I was aiming for. From: Karsten Rutledge and limited to one platform...hmmm... Once again, sorry I am not living up to your standards. I like to look at the brighter side of your comments. I'll just take that as "Do you plan on developing for any other platforms?" Why "Yes". I only started with Windows platforms because it is the one I am most familiar with at the moment. Thanks for your vote of confidence though.

MadamG,
Thank you for including SLuniverse.com, I appreciate it. Quick question for you - is this a shell for Internet Explorer?

That's surprising. I assume you're using the IE render engine then, yuck. FireFox is an open-source browser that can have custom skins applied to it, custom extensions, already has tabbed browsing, and all that fun jazz and more. The extensions make it immensely powerful, and there's pretty much nothing it can't do, including, uh making links to sites you visit frequently. Oh, wait, every browser can do that. Oh yeah, and FireFox runs on Windows/Mac/Linux. Aside from the ghosting, which is of questionable value in my mind anyway, your browser is a very simplistic web browser that offers nothing of benefit, and takes away a whole lot. I really don't see the point, but it is pretty to look at. As for SecondServer, I don't use it, don't care, just curious as to why it got skipped with all the other major retail and shopping sites making it in.

From: Karsten Rutledge What are you using for your render engine? Because if it's not based on Mozilla/Firefox or Opera, people will be exposed to the immense amount of exploits the IE engine has, as well as all of its shortcomings. Also, didn't you know that LL is going to release its own browser soon?

As for SecondServer, I don't use it, don't care, just curious as to why it got skipped with all the other major retail and shopping sites making it in. Uh, Karstan, I don't see anything in MadamG's comments indicating she never heard of Firefox. She said she's never used it. Big difference. I've never used Opera or Safari, but that doesn't mean I haven't heard of them. I doubt there's anyone on this planet not living in a 3rd world country who hasn't heard of Firefox, regardless of whether or not they've used it. Anyway, I realize this is the General Forum, and not everyone here is the epitomy of politeness, but still, didn't your mother ever tell you if you don't have something nice to say...? Come on. I don't know MadamG from a hole in the wall, and I don't know if this browser of hers is any good or not, but what is obvious is that she's put a lot of work into it, and she's asking nothing for it in return. That at the very least warrants some modicum of respect, even if you believe simple human decency does not.

From: Karsten Rutledge What are you using for your render engine? Thank you for inquiring, but being that you made such rude remarks (in my opinion) and stated that you didn't plan on using it anyway, I am not sure why you are interested or concerned. I will tell you that I do not plan on disclosing my "trade secrets" publicly and especially not to anyone who comes at me in such a hostile manner as you did. But as always, I do appreciate your interest.

From: MadamG Zagato Cristiano, The browser runs independent of Internet Explorer. So you have developed your own rendering engine? Or you are using the component version of IE as the rendering engine to actually display the web pages? PS - it using IE as the rendering engine would not be a "trade secret" - it would be immediately apparent just by using the browser if it is IE or not internally. I am not asking to be hostile at all, I am curious - I use an IE-based browser called Maxthon anyway - I was just curious what platform you built the browser on.

From: MadamG Zagato Cristiano, The browser runs independent of Internet Explorer. That doesn't answer the question though. The question at hand is what is the browser based upon - an IE extension, or the Gecko engine, etc? Or are you claiming you wrote a fully skinnable, DHTML-compliant web browsing and rendering engine on your own? - Newfie

Do you mean to say that you just wrote this browser from scratch? Were there more people than just you working on it? Forgive my skepticism, but I find it difficult to believe that one can write a browser from scratch without substantial help. Anyways... does it support CSS? XHTML? JavaScript? (Must run Javascript-- there's the SL map) Hmm... could you run the acid test ( http://www.webstandards.org/act/acid2/test.html#top) and post a screenshot? --Skeptic

It is purely Windows platform at the moment. If you PM me your email address, I can send you a copy tomorrow Cristiano and you can let me know what your opinion is.

I am not sure why that surprises you. You should get out more. There are people in this world that can do amazing things. "Substantial Help"??? I am truly insulted. You don't know me from Adam. But thank you for your criticism...
