Don't play hyperbole, Enabran, that's straw-man attack and you know it.

1. I have a polar bear avatar. Someone comes on, maybe the paws don't render, maybe one paw renders and the other doesn't, maybe the head attachment doesn't, and I appear to have a tiny head.

You'll also be in the background, which means I'm probably not looking at you or interacting with you in any way and so really couldn't care less what you look like. No offense.

Why not, Hiro? You're having such a good time playing it all by yourself with this thread, I want to play it, too!

Why would I be in the background?

This is not hyperbole. The scenarios that I have suggested are well within the realm of what will be happening after this patch.

Improves viewer performance by selectively culling the display of attachments to agents a certain distance away from the person viewing them.

That's why. ;)

Okay, what's a certain distance?

10m? It doesn't matter. If I'm 50m away, but I have a giant dragon AV, it sure will still be visable that I don't have one wing, perhaps.

Ah very well, a question. :)
We will just have to wait and see, or maybe a linden will show up and answer. And that will be most likely be Monday.

I understand your concerns, and have asked the engineer who designed the change for more data.

I will post on Monday with more information.

About your idea of stopping to render a avatar all together, i dislike that option. Eventhough it would improve my framerate, i will never use such a option, because i won't be able to see the actions of the avatar. It might (for example) be humping me, for whatever reason. I would like to be aware of such a action. :)

Good enough for me for now.

Thank you, Linden Lab, for taking the time to investigate this more.

Jeeze the furry people are going to look all weird at a distance with shrunken heads and flat faces.

I myself use several hundred prims on my face. These piercings are a part of my self-expression. I'd feel uneasy knowing that people were looking at me and not getting the total package.

Hmmm so would I violate the ToS if I was wearing attachment based clothing and appeared naked to someone??

Or can we just flush PG sims down the crapper now?

Hey guys!! HI! I hope this isn't too off topic but, I was wondering if you liked my new Victorian Prim Dress!

Notice the bodice has a basque giving a lovely jacket effect. The a white muslin fill-in trimmed with broderie anglaise took me all weekend to make! And the train is to die for!

Hiro,

With all due respect, your entire rant is hyperbole. While there are some valid concerns about how attachment culling will be implemented, all kinds of systems use LOD to handle performance issues, and Linden Lab adapting the graphics engine to display less detail at farther distances is hardly "violating freedom of expression". That is absurd. Instead of just ranting against an implementation that you haven't seen, why not push for allowing us to preview the change, and then make your criticisms after having seen it. Until then, honestly, you are accomplishing absolutely nothing except looking foolish.

Sorry but your rant is blatantly ridiculous and overreacting to an almost satirical level.

It's a performance modification that is intended to remove objects when they reach an insignificant size, hopefully drastically lowering the rendered polygon counts in groups of avatars so we may all live in the world of fluffy rabbits and rainbows that exists when you get more than 10FPS. Unless it's incredibly badly balanced it should have almost no effect on the visual apperance of avs.

YOU WIN THIS THREAD

OK, seriously, can someone tell me how the proposition to selectively cull your neighbor's prims from your view (aka the Lazarus solution) is any different than this - except for avatars? I mean, I'm all for both, and if someone wants to see my av bald as a cueball...well, they can do that NOW half the time. Or else all they see is my attachments. Weeee. Hiro, calm thyself.

Yeah, I thought it was satire at first as well. I use two prim-heavy avitars as my primary avitars (Female dragon and male rat, both from Luskwood), and I don't mind if they can't see my wings or my head until we are in the same room, as long as they appear correctly when one zooms in on a avitar or that it doesn't cull at a really close distance, I'd be happy.
