From: Memir Quinn Not exactly batting a thousand are we? Now now, Lewis hates all things American, so let's put it into terms he can understand: "You're losing five to nil, five minutes into the first half, against against the Bristol Rovers." "You're higher than Ian Botham in the '80s."

From: Keiki Lemieux And you were wrong about the people they picked... they aren't all big business. Come on... just say it. What some people can't accept is that some people are in fact better than others for a variety of reasons. And by better I mean more qualified than others. Its a rather pragmatic approach. Like Jauani said in his post about gardening if he wanted advice he's ask the person with the best garden. Being better does not imply some sort of unfounded superiority on some horrible evil level meant to completely destroy the other person. I can safely say there are a lot of people that qualify as better than me. See two examples below. *I can safely say that Flipper is a better computer programmer than I am. Why? Because its what he has been doing his entire life and what he earned a degree in. So if he was chosen to participate on something based on said skills and expertise I would look like a right fool for saying it isnt fair. That everyone regardless of their skillset and expertise should have been considered and/or chosen. *Is my doctor smarter than I am? Probably, I mean they might not know 52 different ways to describe varying shades of red, but I bet you have to be pretty darned smart to get through medical school and to become a doctor. They usually don't hand those sorts of things out to say garbage men and strippers. I'm not about to start poking around through blood and guts to prove him wrong either. I don't know why I bothered writing this because I am sure someone will respond with zOMG Jennyfur thinks she is better than me. What an elitist FIC bitch! and if you think that then you are sadly missing the point.

From: Lewis Nerd Glad to see that the trolls are out in full force and trying to detract from the main issue here, as usual. I guess I can go and find something better to do until they get bored and go irritate someone else.

From: Cocoanut Cookie I don't see how you are not getting it. The Summa Cum Laude was an opportunity for feting anyone could try for. The University didn't just pick out people they thought were pretty good and give them that award. That is what I am getting at. And so is Linden Lab's attention. Work hard and develop an expertise in something they value. Bring it to their attention effectively. Do something that positively impacts their bottom line, or their marketing, or their media image. Volunteer. Join in resident-led projects that work for special causes... like the New Orleans build last year. *edited to add* And have a reasonably pleasant personality, attitude, and some skills at getting along with diverse people and working in a team. Ranting about how someone is stupid and wrong doesn't get positive attention. E-mailing them directly with a problem definition and a proposed solution gets you a lot further (provided they agree it's a problem) then constantly stirring shit in the forums. If change is what you want, then the above works very well. If attention is what you want, keep on your current path.

From: Lewis Nerd Nothing to do with age - merely that I know how I play and what I do, and nobody else has my experiences. Similar, perhaps, but not the same. Hmm... Ever thought that perhaps LL isn't interested in what YOU do, but might be interested in what someone else does? Just a thought.

ZOMG!!! STORES - BIG BUISNESS!!! ZOMG!!!! And the 'business by proxy' with Catherine - it was pathetic when I read it on Proks blog and it's pathetic now. It's like saying: Anshe has L$ --- Lewis has L$ - My god he's a huge evil business conglomerate land baron... MY GOD THEY BOTH OWN LAND TOO - IT'S WORSE THAN I THOUGHT!

From: Jonquille Noir People being recognized for their hard work, dedication and success is not only fair, it's the way it should be, and I wish it more like that in the real world. If LL feel these people have made themselves stand out from others, then good for them.
I've worked for companies that give out flat raises across the board, regardless of who works hard and who sits on their ass while others pick up their slack. Some people would call that 'fair'. I don't. Just the opposite. Reward those who work the hardest, and let everyone else learn from it. That's fair. A-fucking-men. Reward hard work, what a radical concept!

From: Lewis Nerd I see nothing so far that actually explains the benefits of selecting a small elite group to make decisions for the rest of us. That group already exists. It's called Linden Lab.

From: Lewis Nerd However, none of that still gets past the fact that this whole exercise is entirely unnecessary and could have been much better handled in-world in the environment designed to facilitate such meetings. Again, how can any other company look at SL as a serious 'business platform' when they refuse to use their own system for meetings? That's because it's not a fact. It's your opinion. Linden Lab thinks it's necessary. They have their reasons and they have the right to decide.

From: Joannah Cramer Not sure why you quoted everything i said if you didn't even try to answer any of that.
Anyway, since from your response it looks like you either still don't get it, or it's just more convenient for you to pretend you don't... it's not the program itself that's "PR bull" in my opinion. It's the "we'll fly them in to our HQ so we can get good feedback" part. Hence it's nice if they hand-picked people who are expected to provide valuable input, but it's silly to wrap it with marketing game that doesn't necessarily have to work as well for SL as it does for a 'typical' MMO which also utilize this kind of PR games. Ok, so it's not the program but its that they are flying people out to meet them and that's not the program. Does. Not. Compute. I won't apologize for it not computing to me or cede to your non-point either, you are behaving like a not quite dead yet sailfish in the stern of a fishing boat. From: Joannah Cramer See above; if you cannot separate the overall idea of getting feedback from customers (good) with particular bits of _mechanics_ chosen to gather that feedback (questionable) then it's not my problem. Oh I get it. And it is your "problem", since you are the one inventing and expounding upon "it". I get it alright. They should meet in world, and suddenly, all the cries of indignance will magically disappear.

From: Surreal Farber A-fucking-men. Reward hard work, what a radical concept! Or we could have a Smacktard Olympics competition where people could compete in such varying categories as: - Sumthing for Nuthing: Who can get the most free money without doing anything - Paranoia Paranoia Laalalalaa: Find the FIC conspiracy in Alphabet Soup - Forum troll tossing - Whining, winging and moaning; Who has the endurance to whine winge and moan the most and for the longest consecutive time. - Update Version Failure: Competition to see who has the most lag, log in trouble and teleporting trouble post new updates - Blogathon: Who can post the most verbose tirade on their blog in under 30 seconds. - Redundancy: If you say it enough times and loud enough maybe some one will believe you - You are right always right and everyone elses wrong award for persistence. Feel free to add more categories because this is fairly amusing.

You know the sad thing about this thread?
It's been nothing but a platform for coco to beat her FIC drum and for Lewis to tell us all how superior his vision is for everyone and everything.
There is a missed opportunity here. We could be pro-actively asking LL what aspects of SL they intend to focus on next, then create proposals for ways to advance their aims. If your agenda meshes with Linden Lab's goals and they both get advanced at once, then go you!
It needs to be in a new thread though. This one is tainted from the begining by the perjorative "The Chosen".

How about - The first to mention nazis, and compare oneself to a holocaust survivor for being persecuted by a minority? By the way, what the heck is FIC? I keep misreading that as FDIC.

I know it'd address my personal concern and there would be no reason for me to raise it. See? took a few back-and-forth's but wasn't _that_ hard to get after all...

The answer I usually give.. its a lil tongue in cheek but it's surprisingly accurate. Long Version: A secret society of players given opportunity and privilege above and beyond the rest of the community - giving them unfair advantage and the secret ear of the Lindens. Short Version: Everyone in Second Life who isn't Prokofy Neva, Cocoanut Koala, and their alt accounts. I think the short version is easier to remember, and is more accurate.

What does FIC stand or btw? And meh... I'm going to start a "secretive" group that claims that this is what we do in SL. I wanted to start one in my university, but was too lazy

I wanted to start one in my university, but was too lazy Supposedly 'Feted Inner Core' althought the Feted thing when it came up stunk as a typo (Fetid) but was in hindsight explained away as 'Feted' - being held up - exhalted. And thats the laugh of it - it doesn't exist except in the paranoid delusions of the few.. Folks who need to 'fight the power' - rebels without a cause, or clue for that matter.. It is 'the red under the bed' of SL.

From: Cadroe Murphy I don't understand why LL felt the need to promote what is basically a focus group and then to announce the attendees, though. That seems to be asking for a public controversy.
If they hadn't announced it, they would have been accused of doing this all in secret. It's kind of a damned if they do, damned if they don't thing. Some people will always find something to complain about no matter what.
