From: Viktoria Dovgal They still have the numbers available, at http://secondlife.com/whatis/economy-data.php They just weren't displaying right on the main stats page. For 2008-12-26: December 2008 - MTD Islands Owned (end of Month): 22898 Islands Added During Month: -1664 November 2008 Islands Owned (end of Month): 24562 Islands Added During Month: -1977 As the foot note says: Note: Each day's files reflect data as of midnight the previous day. So the number you are quoting is actualy referring to the 25th of Dec. And if you check, you will see it is not different to the number of the 24th. In that sense, no new numbers.

An island (openspace or not) is only abandoned when a Linden goes it and disables/deletes it (not when the request goes in). I doubt many Lindens will be working over Christmas (and then only on call for emergencies), so the figure will be flat at the moment.
Also, if the stats page has gone wrong (as indicated by the fact it reported all islands abandoned for a short while apparently), it wouldn't be unreasonable that LL has decided that particular problem is not serious enough to warrant pulling the stats scripting Linden in from his/her holiday and have decided to leave it until that Linden is back from holiday before it gets fixed.

Automatic
12-28-2008 05:49
The conversion of 4 OS sims seemed to be an automated process. They have it pre-set to happen at midnight of a certain day and it happens automatically. At least that seemed to be what happened in our case. Tickets sent at the same time to transfer owners are still in the new status. Don't know if that means anything but it might play into the figures somehow too.

Can anybody guess what the Island growth will be in January?
12-31-2008 12:18
It will be interesting to see what the island growth rate will be in January once the OSS monthly tier rises to $95USD.
Anyone have a guess what the growth (negative I am assuming) will be??

And SL is still growing!!
12-31-2008 16:58
The reality of the shrinking grid versus the happy smiles all around from LL, reminds me of a cartoon panel in which a car is passing a sign that reads:
Welcome to Blahtown City Population 500 [crossed out] [Written below that:] 400 [crossed out] 250 [crossed out] 200 and still growing!
Maybe the virtual world of SL is like the Highlander: In the end, there can be only one.
Six hours until the new year in the Rocky Mountains. Y'all have a great one!
This is P S signing off for the last time this year, from the great wasteland plains of Colorado, wishing you all the best and peace for the coming year.

Islands added is still "Temporarily disabled. We apologize for the inconvenience." The holidays (and 200 are over, any reason why this is still disabled?

They are still counting the numbers on the raw data page ( http://secondlife.com/whatis/economy-data.php ) - they just dont swap them to the statistics one.

Yes which makes it very suspicious... most people won't look at the raw data.

And don't forget that without the OS fiasco there would be some 2000 PLUS - so the real loss isn't 4110 but more in the range of 6000. Compared to what would have been without LL backstabbing their customers.

Anybody have grid size numbers from before they made openspace sims easier to get? I'm wondering if we're back below that number yet and, if not, how long it'll take to get there..

Sim tracking

Tyche Shepherd has done amazing work for sometime now on tracking sim losses and gains. http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/business-land-economy/8523-new-second-life-sims-past.html

So.. It looks like around 18k or so when LL made openspace regions easier to get. I would have guessed mid-20ks or so.
I'll guess again and say that the grid won't end up shrinking to numbers below what it was a year ago, ever. Or not due to the openspace pricing changes, anyway.

Well at the current rate it will be at the year point from that posting. Not sure if 2k islands lost per month is sustainable for another 2-3 months.

I think when we look back on this in a year, we'll see that the curve was steepest right before each price bump.. So, in about 2-3 weeks, once the first price bump has happened and people who have been asleep start peeing themselves, it will level off. Then we'll see the same thing again in June or whenever the next price bump is.

Doesn't look like it's slowing down very much, does it? We lost 15% of the land mass before any of the price hikes took affect at all. Now that people are going to be forced to start voting with their pocket books, I expect we'll see the closures due to outrage being replaced by an equal number of closures per day due to simple economics.
If my crystal ball is working - probably not, but hey, my guess is no worse than anyone elses - the total land mass of Second Life by the time the second price hike goes into effect will be roughly 16,000 sims.
The only possible explanation is that Linden Lab is being operated at a loss as a tax shelter. Nothing else makes sense of M Lindens insane move.

Been playing since Oct '06, and I don't know this xD Go to the website, log in to your account, then top menu "Community", left menu "Economic Statistics". Usually there you find lots of statistics, the "Islands added" right now is not active, but you can still get the data when you click on right menu ""Raw Data Files", then you'll find in the center "Islands added" as xml or xls file.
