The survey wasn't designed to answer those questions.

In the case of how many new homesteads, 237 of the 1715 accessible regions sampled, first appeared on the Grid on or after July 1st , of these 117 were full regions, 115 Homesteads and 5 were openspaces, However , appearance on the Grid doesn't necessarily mean newly purchased , they could be renamed regions or created either by consolidation of homesteads or a break up of a full region into homesteads. The sample was also drawn from all regions on the Grid on October 20th, so ignores any regions purchased after 1st July which subsequently went off line in the preceding 3.5 months. I would not use these figures to estimate number of Homesteads purchased since that date.

I also don't record ownership of regions in this survey so can't draw any conclusions about who has been purchasing what. My normal weekly surveys on SLU ,which Pandorah reports in summary here, have more details about which regions have come and gone, as well as identifying any significant changes in private estates .

Thanks Tyche for the quick response.

I realized that there would be limitations to the survey you did. Regardless, the information you so provided is very interesting and is much appreciated by me, and I am sure, by many others.

I know that due to the dynamic nature of SL, and such factors as regions changing hands, going offline and coming back online, plus merging into others, it would be next to impossible to glean what I was requesting.

Since LL is still 'repairing' their statistics page, again quoted from Tyche Shepherd's blog ( http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/business-land-economy/8523-new-second-life-sims-past-20.html ) this week's island numbers:

*
The Grid showed net growth of 44 regions this week, private estates grew by 45 and Linden owned declined by 1.

Total number of Main Grid regions is now 29453 ( 23850 private estates & 5603 Linden owned).
239 new regions were added and 40 returned to the grid, with 252 regions removed (47 were renamed and 4 came and went since last report).

The main change this week was at least 40 Dreamland ACS regions appearing, many of these were returning to the grid as opposed to brand new regions.
The British distance learning organisation , The Open University, also increased their SL holdings by 3 regions and are using Second Life for running online tutorials.

Adult rated regions grew by 16 to 1689, PG rated regions also grew by 16 to 4621.
Breakdown of current regions by Ownership and Classification:

* Estate - Adult: 1342
* Estate - Mature: 19306
* Estate - Offline: 3
* Estate - PG: 3199
* Linden - Adult: 347
* Linden - Mature: 3834

Thanks Pandorah Ashdene. I have the following queries:

Well, asking questions in the forum is not the only source of knowledge. Try the Wikis one day.

and you might want to check out this map (from 2007; Zindra not included): which covers the 6 continents around at that time.

Q2: Can I call Mainland continents as Estate and Linden Lab as Estate Manager?
A: ?..............

From: Gora Runner
Q3: In Mainland continents (or Linden owned Mainlands) is there is Estate owned by private/group? If yes how many are they?
A:............

Estates are per general use (as far as I understand) collections of private regions (so no mainland); although you have mainland 'landbarons' renting out land in multiple sims.

Q4: How many Grids are there in SL?
A: 22/23!

Q5: SL Agni Grid = SL Main Grid + SL Teen Grid + SL Beta Grid
A: right or Beta Grid is not included.............

From: Gora Runner
Q6: Full Regions, Homesteads and Open Spaces applies to both Main Land and Islands?
A:.............

No. All mainland is built of full regions (although not all parcels are the same type, ie. some being double prim, and different landscaping restrictions). Islands or private regions can be of the three categories.

From: Gora Runner
Q7: How initial 16 Regions in SL MainLand were classified?
A: Adult: ? regions + Mature: ? regions + PG: ? regions.......

Sorry, I am not getting the question. '16 intial regions'? Only the continent Zindra is classified as adult. The rest of mainland is mixed mature and PG.

Q8: Does the status: Adult/ Mature/ PG applies even to a minimum parcel of 16 sq. m? Or it is applicable only to a Region only. I mean to say that if I own a parcel of land in a PG rated region, would I be able/ unable to change the status of my plot as Mature?
A:..................

Maturity ratings are for regions, not for parcels. You can restrict the access on the parcel to age verfied/piof with the land window, although my experience is that it is quite borked.

From: Gora Runner
Q9: Ratings: Adult/Mature/ PG apply to Full Regions, Homesteads and Open Spaces ?
A:..............

Yes.

Q10: How much of SL in-world money transaction is related to land buying, selling and renting?
A:

LOL. There are a lot of people who would like to know THAT number.
You can get some insight into the SL economy on the stats page, though patchy, better than nothing maybe:

Since LL is still 'repairing' their statistics page, again quoted from Tyche Shepherd's blog ( http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/business-land-economy/8523-new-second-life-sims-past-20.html ) this week's island numbers:

This week the Main Grid grew in size by 45 regions, 44 of these were private estates.

Total number of Main Grid regions is now 29498 ( 23894 private estates & 5604 Linden owned).
168 new regions were added and 46 returned to the grid, with 171 regions removed (33 were renamed and 1 came and went since last report).

Adult Regions grew by 28 regions to 1709 whilst PG regions declined by 21 down to 4603 , though there were 21 regions offline at the time of today's survey.

Since LL now totaly broke their statistics page, again quoted from Tyche Shepherd's blog ( http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/business-land-economy/8523-new-second-life-sims-past-20.html ) this week's island numbers:

*
Another week with a small positive growth of the Main Grid. Net growth was 19 regions, 12 were private estates and 7 Linden Owned.

Total number of Main Grid regions is now 29517 ( 23906 private estates & 5611 Linden owned).
150 new regions were added and 35 returned to the grid, with 168 regions removed (38 were renamed and 4 came and went since last report).

For one of the first weeks, Adult regions dropped by 23 regions to 1686 whilst PG regions were also down by 2 to 4601. There were , however, 24 regions offline at the time of this survey.

Other than the small drop in Adult regions noting special seems to have happened in this slow week. However the official statistics data file page (Second Life | Economic Statistics (Raw Data Files)) is still stuck in a 1969 timewarp and no new statistical data has been added to the Amazon Cloud since 18th November. Still early days and it's a weekend so probably too early to say if LL have pulled the plug on published statistics or its just a glitch.

I'm also in the middle of a complete census of Mainland (85% complete) which when finished will allow me to report the amount of abandoned land in Governor Linden's hand and the breakdown of premium account holder landownership (and thus monthly tier collect by LL for Mainland) amongst other bits and bobs. I'd expect to publish this information later this week.

Breakdown of current regions by Ownership and Classification:

* Estate - Adult: 1338
* Estate - Mature: 19366
* Estate - Offline: 23
* Estate - PG: 3179
* Linden - Adult: 348
* Linden - Mature: 3840
* Linden - Offline: 1
* Linden - PG: 1422

Just to make sure there is no missunderstanding here: the 'work' is all Tyche Shepherd's; I am just quoting her and posting the results here to keep the people up to date, who are to lazy :) to check out her original post at the other site.
And I agree, Tyche's Mainland census is gonna be a very anticipated read.

I've just published the full results of my Mainland Census here http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/virtual-business/37331-mainland-census-completed.html

For those who can't wait or don't like going across the road the key findings are

A) 30% of Mainland is directly owned by Linden Lab, 27% through Governor Linden.

B) LL holds the equivalent of 187.7 regions of known abandoned land. They also hold another 82.6 equivalent regions which is likely to be abandoned for a maximum of 270.3 regions worth.

C) 22% of Zindra is directly owned by Linden Lab, the other 78% non-Linden owned comes to the equivalent of 267.5 regions

D) Total Mainland monthly tier paid is US$1,076,694 supported by 37909 unique premium account entities (25160 individuals and 12749 groups).

I just checked out the new mainland census.

It was interesting to see where I fit into the data before and after my recent tiering down.

And one HAS to wonder. . .obviously the Lindens MUST have access to this data. I mean, they're able to just bring a report like this up any time they want, right?

In any case, they must hate that we know so much about it.

It would be interesting to see how this data massaged in different ways. For example, if tier were reduced overall so that people could pick up more land and stay within their tier, or group bonus' eliminated, or well whatever. But then again, maybe we shouldn't give M any ideas.

This week's numbers - and a new Continent!

Since LL is back to 'repairing' their statistics page, again quoted from Tyche Shepherd's blog ( http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/business-land-economy/8523-new-second-life-sims-past-21.html ) this week's island numbers:

This week Net growth was only 8 regions but this hides a lot of activity with private regions showing a net decline of 26 regions and Linden owned growing by 34.

Total number of Main Grid regions is now 29544 ( 23899 private estates & 5645 Linden owned)
266 new regions were added and 33 returned to the grid, with 291 regions removed (45 were renamed and 3 came and went since last report)

The biggest changes this week were the arrival of 64 new Linden Regions which are the beginning of a new Linden Continent called Nascera.These regions appeared within the past 24 hours and are currently closed but can be found due east of Sansara,The southern most Mainland continent, its also almost due south from the Gaeta Continent. Nascera regions currently have generic names such as "Nascera 1204 915", the numbers representing their X & Y position within the grid. I am guessing that Nascera is the new proposed home for the Premium Linden Home initiative announced 2 days ago (https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/land/blog/2009/12/04/home-is-where-you-hang-your-avatars-hat?). I believe that Nascerá is the Italian and Portuguese for born.
The current land looks flat and green.

Other significant activity was the removal of the 30 Linden owned Burning Life regions and 16 Utopia Portugal estate regions, Dreamlands ACS expanded by at least 20 regions.
Adult rated regions grew by 7 to 1718, PG rated regions dropped by 21 to 4575. All of the Nascera regions are rated as mature.

Breakdown of current regions by Ownership and Classification:

* Estate - Adult: 1370
* Estate - Mature: 19369
* Estate - Offline: 10
* Estate - PG: 3150
* Linden - Adult: 348
* Linden - Mature: 3872

This week the Main Grid grew by 36 regions , Private Estates grew by 40 and Linden owned declined by 4.

Total number of Main Grid regions is now 29580 ( 23939 private estates & 5641 Linden owned).
199 new regions were added and 56 returned to the grid, with 217 regions removed (91 were renamed and 1 came and went since last report).

The main news this week was the official naming of the 64 Nascera Linden Home regions which I reported yesterday and the return of the 16 Utopia Portugal regions on Monday. The were very few estate changes though 8 Paradox regions went offline this week.

Region Statistics (and other SL Economic Metrics) are now available in world by using my Public APIs detailed at Second Life Grid Survey - API Reference.

Adult rated regions showed a small increase of 15 to a total of 1733. PG rated regions also showed marginal growth of 3 regions for a total of 4578.
Breakdown of current regions by Ownership and Classification:

This week the Grid grew by 49 regions. Private Estates grew by 48, whilst Linden owned gained 1 region.
