Since LL is still 'repairing' their statistics page, again quoted from Tyche Shepherd's blog ( http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/business-land-economy/8523-new-second-life-sims-past-18.html ) this week's island numbers:

*
In what was a relatively quiet* week, the grid contracted by 36 regions since my last report.

Total number of Main Grid regions is now 28902 , 23358 private estates (down 41) & 5544 Linden owned (up 5). 137 new regions were added and 28 returned to the grid, with 212 regions removed (33 were renamed and 8 came and went since last report with 6 making a temporary return)

Main comings and goings this week included the disappearance of the Brazilian 24 region Cancao estate and the 9 SPconference regions. LL added an additional 4 regions to the Zindra Adult continent.
This week the number of Adult rated regions rose by 25 to 637 (348 private estates), Adult rated regions now account for 2.2% of the total grid (1.5% of private estates and 5.2% of Mainland). PG rated regions account for 16.1% of the total grid (13.9% of private estates and 25.6% of Mainland).

Breakdown of current regions by Ownership and Classification:

* Estate - Adult: 348
* Estate - Mature: 19739
* Estate - Offline: 18
* Estate - PG: 3253
* Linden - Adult: 289
* Linden - Mature: 3839
* Linden - PG: 1416

This week's numbers

Since LL is still 'repairing' their statistics page, again quoted from Tyche Shepherd's blog ( http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/business-land-economy/8523-new-second-life-sims-past-18.html ) this week's island numbers:

*
Another slow week with a small net growth of 22 regions (16 private estates and 6 Linden owned). The total number of Main Grid regions is now 28924 ( 23374 private estates & 5550 Linden owned).
217 new regions were added and 26 returned to the grid, with 225 regions removed (61 were renamed and 1 came and went since last report with 4 making a temporary return).

The biggest change on the grid this week was what I call the "Big Adult Turn-on", following Tuesdays email to some private estate owners an additional 255 private estate regions changed their classification to Adult. This means there are now 602 Adult private estate regions and 292 Linden owned bring Adult classified regions up to 894, or 3.1% of the grid.
There has also been a great deal of activity in reclassification of PG to Mature and vice versa since LL announced the adult changes. The following flow chart *[see Tyche's Blog]* shows the number of private regions who have changed (or not) their classification since 22nd April this year (based on Friday's survey, not todays), when it first became possible to change regions to Adult. Since then there has been a decline of 191 PG private estates from 16% of the grid down to 13%.

Breakdown of current regions by Ownership and Classification:

* Estate - Adult: 602
* Estate - Mature: 19506
* Estate - Offline: 16
* Estate - PG: 3250
* Linden - Adult: 292
* Linden - Mature: 3835
* Linden - Offline: 2
* Linden - PG: 1421

No - this looks like dispassionate, clearly reported, concise information regarding region ownership trends to me. I always check the updates.

Thank you for your encouragement, - all of you. Actualy the 'work' is Tyche Shepherd's (who is doing a hell-of-a-job getting those figures in the first place), - I am just a small wheel in the community machinery, that tries to keep the information flowing, since the Lab is not willing or capable of making this statistical data accessable.

If it is possible, I think I should like to see a yearly comparison, stats for SL now versus what they were at the same time of year in '08. If 07 stats are to be found that too. Rate of growth, loss etc. This is just some musing aloud, :)

Thanks for posting the statistics available. It's an excellent effort and very appreciated.

I can offer you a comparison / the development in two parts:

The fist part is the square metres of land (in millions) - from a time when the Lab still published those numbers on a monthly basis:

year month mainland islands
2006 October 84 134
2006 November 85 170
2006 December 87 206
2007 January 103 258
2007 February 116 296
2007 March 132 372
2007 April 145 435
2007 May 160 491
2007 June 167 546
2007 July 179 601
2007 August 189 650
2007 September 185 687
2007 October 186 718
2007 November 184 755
2007 December 185 778
2008 January 183 820
2008 February 187 852
2008 March 188 906
2008 April 192 1,001
2008 May 224 1,206
2008 June 222 1,355
2008 July 223 1,490
2008 August 224 1,610
2008 September 224 1,723
2008 October 227 1,786
2008 November 226 1,645

(Sorry for the ugly format, but I have no idea how to make proper tables in here :(
Paste them in exel and you see a nice graph :)

When the OS fisko kicked in, the Lab developed problems getting their numbes published, but fortunately Tyche had started to keep track before, so there is a certain overlap:

Land price development
09-04-2009 06:06
Another quite interesting column of numbers is the land price development (Avg L$ Paid Per Square Meter):

Jun 07 9.07
Jul 07 8.48
Aug 07 7.08
Sep 07 6.46
Oct 07 6.25
Nov 07 6.31
Dec 07 6.30
Jan 08 6.53
Feb 08 6.72
Mar 08 6.26
Apr 08 5.05
May 08 3.23
Jun 08 2.82
Jul 08 2.29
Aug 08 1.98
Sep 08 1.78
Oct 08 1.60
Nov 08 1.98
Dec 08 1.97
Jan 09 1.88
Feb 09 1.81
Mar 09 1.77
Apr 09 1.61
May 09 1.50
Jun 09 1.17
Jul 09 1.10
Aug 09 0.92

You dont even have to turn it into a graph to see the obvious.
(These are by the way Lab numbers collected from here: http://secondlife.com/statistics/economy-data.php - from the land_sales_by_residents.xls files)

Note that the stats page still has the 'old' design, with the "Your world. Your imagination." header - kinda sad somehow. Wonder when this page will be a victim of the redesign and probably just vanish.

Thank you again for taking the time and effort to show us an ongoing picture of how the land growth stands in Second Life.

I was really wanting to add ocean areas around my island, but the available land types are not filling me with enthusiasm.

Yet again a slow week on the Grid, which showed a small net growth of 30 regions (29 Private Estates).

Total number of Main Grid regions is now 29403 ( 23798 private estates & 5605 Linden owned).
168 new regions were added and 30 returned to the grid, with 177 regions removed (71 were renamed and 3 came and went since last report).
There were no major coming or goings on the Grid though the new 33 Ursula Regions were renamed to their final names.

Whilst my daily grid surveys have showed a quiet grid, I've been busy this week running two special surveys. The first completed on Monday shows that Governor Linden directly owns 30% of Mainland land by area, and that 84% of Resident Owned Mainland is group owned.
The second completed on Friday estimates that 60% of Private Estates are Full Regions, 39% Homesteads and 1% Openspaces.

Adult regions grew by 27 to 1651 (5.6%), PG Regions grew by 5 to 4644 (15.8%).

And an interesting breakdown of Estate Regions (quoted from Tyche Shepherd: http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/virtual-business/35764-60-private-estate-regions-full.html )

I have just completed a 2000 region survey of Private Estates to estimate Full Region/Homestead/Openspace penetration figures. The Results are as follows

* Full Regions : 1029
* Homestead Regions: 672
* Openspace: 14
* Closed to Public :285

Of the 1715 accessible regions , 60.0% are Full Regions, 39.18% are Homesteads and 0.82% are Openspaces. The Margin of Error on the first two percentages is +/-2.23% at the 95% confidence level, The Openspace Margin of error is +/-0.41%.

Last time I ran a similar Survey was August 2008 (Openspaces nearly half of all Estate Sims) where I estimated 54% Full Regions vs 46% Old Style Openspaces. This was a few months before the repricing of Homesteads .

One significant change from the last survey is that the proportion of regions closed to public access has declined from 17.0% to 14.25%. Just by scanning region names there seems a small bias towards commercial/academic regions being closed to the public , the same trend was noted last survey.

In my Survey Bots travels she only visited one region which was the "Homestead - Developed" type , i.e one of the new homesteads delivered with Linden Content . This seems to indicate that there has been very little demand for this Linden Product.

The 2000 sample was randomly drawn from all 23812 Private Estates present on the Grid on 20th October 2009. An additional 25 regions were also selected to replace regions which went off the Grid between the sample being drawn and the actual surveying, or in 4 cases were off line during the surveying period. None of the 5604 Mainland regions were included in the sampling.

It would be interesting to find out from this sample, how many new Homesteads and Open Space sims have been purchased since July 1, 2009, if that is possible. July 1st was when the monthly tier for Homesteads was finally put up to 125 USD. Also, if there are any, who are the owners of them, i.e., large land barons only? Those kind of stats would be most revealing, indeeeeeed.

The survey wasn't designed to answer those questions.

In the case of how many new homesteads, 237 of the 1715 accessible regions sampled, first appeared on the Grid on or after July 1st , of these 117 were full regions, 115 Homesteads and 5 were openspaces, However , appearance on the Grid doesn't necessarily mean newly purchased , they could be renamed regions or created either by consolidation of homesteads or a break up of a full region into homesteads. The sample was also drawn from all regions on the Grid on October 20th, so ignores any regions purchased after 1st July which subsequently went off line in the preceding 3.5 months. I would not use these figures to estimate number of Homesteads purchased since that date.

I also don't record ownership of regions in this survey so can't draw any conclusions about who has been purchasing what. My normal weekly surveys on SLU ,which Pandorah reports in summary here, have more details about which regions have come and gone, as well as identifying any significant changes in private estates .
