We are releasing the first iteration of the new Viewer 1.22 Release Candidate (RC0). Help us to identify new bugs and try out the new features before it becomes an official download for Second Life! Participating in the Release Candidate viewers is completely optional. You may install this viewer side-by-side with the official viewer that you normally use.

This viewer will be a maintenance release. There are over 60 fixes that solve bugs from previous versions of Second Life. Some of these are small improvements that make existing features work more smoothly (like Beacons and Snapshots). Other fixes improve glitches in the rendering of avatars, like the much anticipated VWR-8920 and VWR-7957.

There is so much to list, please check out the Full release notes:

NOTE: Because of a number of known bugs in this early candidate, we have made this RC0 viewer an optional upgrade from the previous Release Candidate. You can choose to wait for RC1 before upgrading your Release Candidate.

Still, we do need your help to find crash cases and other feedback! Please visit the Test Viewers page to download the 1.22 RC0 viewer:

Be sure to report new issues at jira.secondlife.com and set the "Affects Version/s" to "1.22 Release Candidate". We can only investigate and solve issues that are reported there.

makes it a very happy day indeed even if there are stability issues. I'll be testing this out later tonight.

Edit: Ramzi, quick question, it says on the wiki page that "Thread monitor can be disabled with a command line setting "--set WatchdogEnabled 0" " can thread monitoring be enabled on other viewers by setting "--set WatchdogEnabled 1" and is this command line a valid command line for all the viewer versions? If so then I've been missing this for awhile because I've had many instances when this would have been nice to know.

Hello

I downloaded the new RC and I can't login. Everytime I load SL I crash. I believe it's probably the reconfiguration of my preferences, or system setting that it performed once I loaded it. Not exactly sure what the issue is, but I crash about once every 3-4 weeks, and today I've crashed more than all my crashes in the past put together.

I was curious if anyone else was having the same issue.

So far, after about an hour running the new RC seems stable and no obvious issues. Had one freeze, and one very odd moment when my partner became totally black for about 30 seconds, but I'm not even sure those were issues with the RC.

Performance seems better than I've been getting for the last few days as well.

EDIT: Skin textures appearing black is happening fairly consistently. Seems to occur in a similar way to Ruthing or the white cloud - when AVs have just logged on or TP'd in nearby. Skin reverts to normal after 10-30 seconds.

That one is in the known issues section of the RC0 release notes.

Hmmm, when I check Atmospheric Shaders 'on', the sky turns a monochromatic yellow and everything else changes to blacks and greys.

I'll have to recheck this on my main system at home.

http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-7937

^ Still would be a delight to have

http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-7334

^ Didn't see this referenced on the fix list

http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-9373

^ Still not fixed

And why is Threaddog or whatever still here? Keep it on, or keep it off, what's the point of continually flip-flopping?

mmm. Seems like some unresolved issues from the 1.21 version have been lost from the unresolved list of 1.22 yet have not been fixed. The one I noticed in particular is VWR-8814. The alt-cam no longer centers on the avatar as it did in 1.20 and earlier, but instead 1 m ahead of the avatar. This is very annoying to those who rely on that technique to turn the avatar, like most fashion models.

And, if we're posting wish lists, VWR-8768 & VWR-8770!!!

From: VWR-8768
Buy Land dialog should make it obvious if the land is on an openspace region

From: VWR-8770
About Land should show openspace vs full and the server class of the host

One minor thing I noticed was the UI sounds. I keep hearing the clicks and beeps despite having it muted. I also crashed once but I wasn't watching the screen when it happened so I'm not sure what caused it.

I downloaded and was in SL for 10 minutes..just answering Im's. I did not even move. I suddenly crashed for no reason...and now whenever I log on I crash the instant I make contact with the world.

Black everywhere?
11-20-2008 14:57
Has the default 'texture not loaded' colour been switched to black or is that just something I'm seeing? It looks AWFUL and, unlike the 50% grey we have currently, it shows no shading at all so you can't start to orientate or navigate yourself while things load.

The option to set texture memory lower than the actual amount on your graphics card has also been locked-off. A lot of people used this option to tweak performance because frame-rates can be higher with this set lower than 100%.

Hi Gordon,
Yes, "--set WatchdogEnabled 1" will turn ON thread monitoring in other viewers, and this is a valid command parameter for all our viewers.
The effect of turning this ON means that when your Second Life has frozen for a period greater of 20 seconds or more, it will force a crash, so that you can send detailled logs to Linden Lab so that we might diagnose and fix such hidden lockup issues.

I see everything as full bright white for some reason - just as annoying though :)

"Fixed: sorting of Group member list ignores the year"

I don't think so, I am seeing the last two characters of the year truncated.

What was the JIRA for that? It's not listed in the release notes.

Hi Monica,
Although we do track the unresolved issues separately by version, this is not to imply that we are not still working on other bugs from previous versions.
The bug VWR-8814 will still be tracked even though we have marked it as originally appearing in 1.21.
Due to the priorities of this and other bugs, it is not likely to be fixed in 1.22 however. In general the goal in 1.22 is to contain today's stated 60 bug fixes, plus the additional stabilization that we must invariably do to get 1.22 as good or better than 1.21.

Hi Wulfric- Looks like you are experiencing VWR-10570. We've got a fix on the way in RC1. Sorry about that!

Doesn't happen on my main system. However, as I was typing this, RC0 did crash on my main system and is no longer coming up. Oh well.

Yeay New RC!
11-20-2008 16:12
Always love checking these out and helping bug em but why are there so many Jira's with patches that don't get added? Imprudence just came out and they added a bunch of them and it improves stability and some needed features. For some reason it almost seems that 3rd party clients get ignored even if they have good fixes?

What happened to:

Advanced->Rendering->Features->Palletized Textures?

Removed on purpose, owing to problems folks are having, I think nVidia's latest drivers aren't using this any more.
