Insomnia strikes, so:

1.what is your gender?
Female (RL/SL)

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?
I set up a male alt once. Got bored with him after about 20 mins. Plus I couldn't get his shape right - he just ended up looking like a girl.

3.why or why not?
Just to see what it was like being a bloke. Answer: really dull.. (sorry lads :D )

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?
Yes. Mainly the female stereotypes (4-foot long legs / massive norks / orange tan / skimpy clothing / general aura of drag queen - we all know the ones.)

Strangely enough, I rarely see a male av and think "I bet you're a girl in RL"...

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?
No.

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?
No. I don't do that in RL either. ;)

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?
No.

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?
No. I like being a woman - real and virtual :)

All my answers are the same as these. :)

What I do find slightly unsettling sometimes is when an av frequently changes sex or even species, not by means of an alt. but within the same resident name.
*snippity snip*

See I disagree, I know some ...most ppls need the alt change for their "w/e" immersion
or privacy, insecurities of wanting to RP some other being/sex.
My senses really find it dishonest to others, to the person themselves.
If I was going to be a guy, I'd be a guy as my only account, or any of the fant characters I like, werewolf, black wolf, dog. crow, Inu, dark/frost elf, little demoness, abstract etc.
I'm 50/50 on ppls I have encountered, communicate w/ having alts and alt lifes so far.
Some are np, and I enjoy their characters they present, maintain.
Some are nothing but unresolved drams/processes or up to no good or made themselves emo ill, playing what they aren't, no matter what they portray.
And most just end up telling on themselves anyways.
But aren't some of the greatest ppls in SL who are happy here and get along, the ones that are *wheee* and honest *emits famous SL nicknames*
I'm an adult, I can like or not like something, experience and know it and opt out of certain situations.
I'd rather know a person is a shape/sexshifter then a coward, I can deal w/ that.

*I'm not thinking about store owners, big content creators, that's my only flaw in my argument, besides my own prejudices/issues, I get argh w/ just friends jumping me in IMs, can only imagine what's it's like w/ a customer base here, ugh.*

1 Female

2 Nope

3 Never even thought about it and the chances are if I tried it people would suss out I was female very quickly.

4 Nope and in all honesty this is SL and if the person who is talking to you is a different sex to their AV then thats there SL. Also I don't change the way I interact with people based on their sex.

5 Don't do any RP but I should imagion that I wouldn't.

6 Don't think so but I wonder if others have been more understanding when I have called on them for help because I am a female.

7 Don't think so.

8 Same as question 3 I just don't think I could pull it off and don't really have a desire to see what it would be like in a male AV.

GOD I'M SO BORING!!!!!

Actually, yeah I want to change my answer to "5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?"

My new answer is "Of course I do. I treat male avatars like RL men, and female avatars like RL women. With male avatars I usually don't use a lot of emo words, and conversations are usually kept straightforward, unless they're obviously in a chatty mood. With female avatars, I'll use the word 'honey, dear,' etc more often, and I might talk about emotions/personal issues/clothes a bit more. I don't think it's a conscious effort, I just think that men get bored talking about emotions/clothes/personal issues after about 3 minutes. Obviously, not all men are the same, nor are all women, and it's rough that I'm sexually stereotyping here, but golly, I was raised in a society where men all usually act a certain way and are therefore treated accordingly, and same with women.

Note that I didn't say that one way is worse/preferable to another. That's just how it is.

So, yes, usually I treat male avatars like men, and female avatars like women. If the sex of the avatar is indiscernable, I'll lean toward treating the avatar as male, simply because it might get bored talking about shoes."

So far 15 responders have identified themselves as male and 27 as female. I wonder what it all means.

First, I want to say ther is no way in hell you are going to get acurit information by asking personal and possibily embarasing questions on an open forum. If I were actually a woman but everyone here on these forums believed me to be a man, accepted me as a man and I had girlfriends because I was a man, do you really think I would tank my social life just because yet another "research" question showed up on a puplic web site?

I agree... the questions are poorly worded/phrased, too ambiguous and shouldn't be asked on a public website because it involves RL disclosure - privacy issues. Should just create a survey on a website like esurveyspro.com and link to it from the forums. Then anybody could go over and do it, and the results would be anonymous.

I thought it might be that but I wasn't sure.

Of course we don't know what the OP is really doing here. The questions might be perfectly composed to get exactly the information desired.

So, tell me, OP, what colour is my heart angel, or whatever?

1.what is your gender?
Female

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?
Yes

3.why or why not?
Because I can

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?
yes

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?
not consiously

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?
Totally! :D

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?
I think I try and treat them like a person either way.

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? No

The only reason I have an alt who is the opposite gender is because sometimes I get tired of being hit on. Guys seem to get left alone, especially ones that don't seem quite right ... hehehehe :D

1.what is your gender?
Female

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?
No, thought about creating a male alt just to see how I good I could make him look, and for assistance in poseball positioning. But I've never gotten around to it yet. Thus far I have no alts.

3.why or why not?
Because I don't think of my av as a "character". I feel as if it's an extension of my RL self and I've never had a desire to be a man.

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?
Occasionally, but most of the time I take things at face value and don't give it much thought (as long as I'm not entering into an intimate relationship with them).

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?
Somewhat, but we do that every day in RL.

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?
Not that I'm aware of.

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?
No, I treat them as they portray themselves.

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?
Doubtful. I used to play Lineage II... my main is female and again, she is "me" as far as I'm concerned. I had several alts of different classes, but all females... in my mind, different aspects of my personality. Then I acquired use of a male friend's account and wanted to make a buffer class on it, so in keeping with his gender, I created a male Shillen elder. Also it was nice to have a male companion for my female characters, but I never thought of "him" as me.

Interesting.

1 - F
2 - Yes. I just created a male alt to see how the other half lives. It wasn't all that interesting.
3 - I've consistently read that being a new guy on SL is harder than being female. Mainly because there are fewer options in clothing and promotionals to get started. I discovered that this problem is very true.
4 - I've never really thought about it much. I do my own thing on SL and mostly keep to myself.
5 - I suppose yes. I'm more apt to find females more approachable than males.
6 - No and I never would.
7 - SL allows everyone to explore if they want and I see no need to call them out on it in any way.
8 - I have a few male alts on WoW. However I mostly stick my female characters. When I don't want to deal with crazy IM messages I play my guy alts for some peace. That is about it.

yes, but his point is, the answers are going to be skewed toward the side of "I don't play a character of the opposite gender", as most people who do aren't about to out themselves on a public forum. So it's very flawed research.

1.what is your gender? female in RL and SL
2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? no
3.why or why not? i like being female
4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? sometimes
5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? yes...i only flirt with men LOL
6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? hmmm...i flirt, i bat my eyelashes so i guess the answer is yes
7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? more times i have suspected it rather than known and i have just responded to how they act with me, not the suspicion
8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? Nope...none

that aside...i will say that i have discovered over time that im pretty good at spotting men in female avatars. many of my "suspects" have turned out to be male. most have mannerisms and habits that they dont change so they end up acting like most guys i know. but, i try to take people as they present....a male av is a male in my book.

Agreed - this is a horrifically bad research technique. You're not getting a statistically significant sample, it's not an appropriate cross-section of the population, it doesn't lend itself to any legitimate conclusions, and its accuracy is highly suspect. All in all, it's fatally flawed. I hope this isn't for a class. Based on research techniques alone, the OP deserves a pretty low grade.

1.what is your gender? Female

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? No

3.why or why not? Have you ever looked at guy's clothing!?

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? Sure, I read an SL fact that said 40% of SL females are really males.

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? I do avoid most male avis because they're usually interested in ONE thing! LOL! In all fairness, I have met some very sweet guys too :)

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? No

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? No, everyone in SL is represented by who they wish to be known as. Why treat them different? Even goofy avis represent the real person behind them.

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? No. I see no point in doing so. For me, it provides no benefit.

1.what is your gender? female

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? no

3.why or why not? I am all woman baby! LOL

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? yes

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? SL is a lot like RL. So, a little, I guess. Men tend to be all about sex, etc. so I am dealing with that. The ladies are mostly about hanging out and visiting - unless you go to a GLBT sim. I have one really good male friend IW (hi hun), but gender can still be an issue.

Remember "When Harry Met Sally"? "What I'm saying is — and this is not a come-on in any way, shape or form — is that men and women can't be friends because the sex part always gets in the way...Because no man can be friends with a woman that he finds attractive. He always wants to have sex with her...." Sally replies, "So you're saying that a man can be friends with a woman he finds unattractive?" Harry says "No, you pretty much want to nail 'em too...Doesn't matter because the sex thing is already out there so the friendship is ultimately doomed and that is the end of the story." Of course, they go on to become best friends, ultimately sleep together, end their friendship, fall in love, and live happily ever after...and I actually think that it goes both ways. Women like sex and love too!

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? You bet and I like to be taken advantage of! LOL

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? It depends. I have met several women that I actually think are gay men and that does not bother me in the least. I do feel a little uncomfortable with a man trying to befriend another female with the guise of womanhood. I also take issue with str8 men playing lesbians. It just seems so deceitful. But that is par for the course.

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? Yes, I think that if it were truly a game (competitive) than I would prefer to be a male character because of the strength element. I mean, if any woman has ever played any old school game, they are usually a man by default. I am not a "gamer", so I cannot speak from experience.

LOL - I bet the OP is more curious as to see who, if any, will out themselves. If I had invested time and money into being the opposite sex in SL, I wouldn't say it here.

Most games now that let you choose between a male and female avatar give the exact same powers to each. I was actually hoping that there would be a difference in Guild Wars, because it would mean I would have had to adjust my strategy to be successful. Might have been interesting. Maybe take some physical strength away but give an accuracy bonus, or better speed or something to even it out. You're just given a choice for your personal preference. I don't know of any where men and women of the same class (ie - the same type of player) have different powers based on their gender.

Ok.. just to help with your 'research' project... and I am amazed that this thread has not blown up yet..

1.what is your gender?

Male

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?

No, but I played WITH characters of the opposite sex... does that count?

3.why or why not?

I would be a terrible woman.. scratching inappropriate places, burping loudly and keeping my hand inside my pants waistband all of the time...

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?

Sure... sometimes its pretty obvious.. (See 3)

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?

Yes.. I treat male avs like I would treat guys in rl.. and female avs like I would treat women in rl... I've never tried to grope or leered at a male av before.

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?

All the time.. its fun. Everyone should try it.. If you can't take advantage of your gender then what can you take advantage of?

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?

Yes... to some extent. The natural sexual tension is not there. But other than that we are all flesh and bones.

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?

Not really.. but I don't play any other games.
