1.what is your gender? Female
2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? Yes
3.why or why not? I design men's hair... I also model my creations. I have four alts (or as I refer to them, mules); and for the sake of interest value I've mixed and matched. One female, two males and a non-anthro furry of indeterminate gender
4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? Frequently, but I keep my opinions to myself.
5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? No... I treat people differently based on their attitude, stature and actions. I intentionally have a short avatar - and I find avatars that stand a clear two feet taller than me; stand so close that I have to cam round them to see myself and then open conversations with "WOW LOL! u r SOOOOO short! LOL!" aren't worth dealing with. As far as I know, the majority of offenders are male, but a lot of "female" avs do this to me too... In short I make the assumption that if I run into an av that's got the majority of stature settings to 100 on the sliders and communicates almost exclusively through gestures and "LOL"s; they're not worth getting to know as we have too little in common.
6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? Not intentionally...
7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? Not at all...
8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? Um... no... don't know, and not sure... Although when it comes to Guitar Hero I generally default to playing with Johnny Napalm.

1.what is your gender? Assuming you mean IRL... female
2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? All the time, yes. I don't even bother to switch between alts. When you see Pie in-world, there's always a 50/50 chance of which gender you'll see.
3.why or why not? Because I can.
4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? Mmmhmmm.
5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? Nope, just on their avatar's attitude.
6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? I use my girl avatar to get into all the lesbian venues and my boy avatar to get into all the gay clubs... does that count?
7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? In all instances I try to treat nice people as nice people and asshats as asshats. I don't treat anyone any differently based on their gender. That would be kinda shallow.
8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? In Guild Wars I also have an equal smattering of male/female characters... Female Necro, male warrior, male assassin, female monk, ect.... depends completely on what the armor looks like for each character for their sex. In SL I am not much for fashion, but in Guild Wars I am a clothes horse... go figure.
Part of me has always believed that if you have NEVER had a avatar of another gender and walked around in it a while, interacted with people... you are missing a fabulous opportunity to see "life from the other side".

1.what is your gender? Male
2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? no
3.why or why not? because i never cared to
4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? nah, i dont really care about that
5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? i treat everyone about the same
6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? maybe. does being a male stripper count?
7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? nah, i figure if someone wants to be a woman on sl, let them.
8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? sure. i have played mass effect as a woman character. why? because i beat it as a man, so wanted to see what different options there were as a woman

1.what is your gender? Male (Rl and SL)
2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? Yes, but nowadays I just use a female shape when I want to try out animations for my furniture. Looks absolutely ridiculous, though my ass is a lot cuter.
3.why or why not? See 2
4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? Yes, most male AVs are in fact girls who are tired of being hit on. Most girl AVs are men who want to be hit on.
5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? Yes, I only make sexist remarks to AVs with cute butts.
6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? Yes, but the particles spoiled it. Oops you ment something else?
7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? Not as long as they have cute butts.
8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? I loved being Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider games. Guess why.

heehee, So I have a male ava that I use sometimes and I take all the male, sexiest, stopid remarks that I have hear before and hit on female avs with them. I can tell when a female Ava is a male, is when they work!! JulieAnne

From: Azzle Gotter Hi, I'm doing some research for a class I'm currently taking. and I'd like to ask some questions on how people play and what they think about playing different genders. feel free to skip over any questions you don't feel comfortable answering. your avatars name will not be used in the final report.
1.what is your gender? 2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? 3.why or why not? 4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? 5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? 6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? 7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? 8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? Oh, goody, more "class research." I'll bit dis time, though, cuz it's at least interesting. 1.what is your gender? Female 2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? Yes, I tried a male character back in my AD&D days; no as far as SL is concerned. 3.why or why not? In those days, eh, I tried a lot of different characters. I played elves and other stuff that wasn't what I am IRL. Nowadays, well, I'm happy jes bein the me I am here. 4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? Often? No. I've known a couple, an I also know some folks who are transgender an exploring gender stuff in SL. 5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? Not especially, nope. 6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? Huh? 7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? Not especially, nope. If someone is a dragon, I react to them as if they're a dragon. If they are a kid in world, I view 'em as a kid... so this is somehow different? 8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? Which genders, or which games? Actually, not dat I c'n tink of. I'm not in any other games (or platforms like SL, so there, nyah!) an not dat interested in any others, so I couldn't say one way or another. Prob'ly not.

** Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? Yes, pretty much daily, with virtually any variation you can imagine. Males, females, she-males, herms, neuter... Different species, as well. I'm usually not even human. My characters are fairly evenly distributed across the possible variations.
** why or why not? I like variety. I also like being an actress able to take on an extremely wide range of roles. To me, all my characters are fictional, theatrical roles that I play. None are, strictly speaking, "Me". Not even the one that closely matches my RL gender and appearance.
** Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? Frequently. I generally try to take everyone at face-value, but my base assumption is that most females in SL are actually males. It's an accurate assumption more often than not.
** Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? No. I generally try to take everyone at face-value. And in RL I treat females and males fairly equally.
** Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? Not particularly, though whatever gender I happen to be playing at the time is what I present myself as. For example, my males would never claim their Player was anything other than male, and my females will never claim their Player is anything other than female.
** If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? I try not to, but when I know their RL gender, I do somewhat tend to treat them as their real gender. By that I mean I'll tend to talk about topics more of interest to that gender.
** Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? Always have. In virtually any roleplaying game or on-line game or computer game where one has a choice of genders, I'll play all the variations freely.

Yes (I know some of the femme strippers are really men) No No (and what do you mean?) No Yes -unreal tournament- because they gots skills some femme characters don't

First, I want to say ther is no way in hell you are going to get acurit information by asking personal and possibily embarasing questions on an open forum. If I were actually a woman but everyone here on these forums believed me to be a man, accepted me as a man and I had girlfriends because I was a man, do you really think I would tank my social life just because yet another "research" question showed up on a puplic web site?
I'll send you 10L$ in game so you can cet a clue!
1.what is your gender? player or character?
2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? Yes
3.why or why not? I'll go with why not.
4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? To answer the exact wording of the question: No.
5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? Yes
6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? Yes. I flirt with women who would not be approachible if I were also a woman.
7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? Different than what? Their RL gender or their SL gender?
8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? More likely? No.
There have been many such "research papers" done and this is one of the worst worded and thoughtout questionairs I have seen.

1.what is your gender? Male
2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? No. Different species (Hybrid Demon)...but he's a guy too.
3.why or why not? Just don't feel the need to RP a female AV. I blend SL and RL quite a bit, so as Popeye once said, 'I yam what I yam!'
4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? I wouldn't say often. I don't really think about it. The majority of my friends and clients use voice...so I know what gender they are (voice manipulators are easy to spot).
5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? No. Although, if it's a girl, I'm more likely to check for a FL pic...I know, I'm a bad bad boy.
6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? No more than I take advantage of who I am on a daily basis in RL.
7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? No. To each is own...or better said, 'you go boy/girl.'
8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? Not really. I generally choose male if I have the choice. I love playing females in specific games made to be played as female...but if I have a choice, I go for the male.

After looking at Michael Bigwig's answer, I want to change my answer - I've played all sorts of things that aren't human: skeleton/fossil birds, a couple robots, a tomato (oneof my favorites), a couple dragons...maybe some others. I can't access my inventory right now, so I don't remember exactly. I consider those to be gender neutral or male, I guess, since I'm male, but they would work equally well on a woman.

I have to admit I'm laughing and shaking my head at all of the "I do not treat men and women differently" answers.
Rarely is that ever the case, though we are often trained to believe that it is true (and especially trained to say it is true even if we suspect that we don't). I was raised in a gender neutral household and it took many, many years to realize that we are culturally (and possibly genetically) programmed to treat men and women differently and that even I did it. I denied it vehemently for a long time. Often, it's subtle, until you find yourself on the opposite side long enough to experience it.
I think it behooves us all, and may help our society, to delve into that question more honestly and deeply, though perhaps this open forum and particular questionnaire is not the most successful venue.
I'm not pointing fingers at any one poster here. There may actually be some rare individuals here that honestly treat everyone the same, but the odds bear out that most of them actually do not and are oblivious to the fact.

1. What is your gender? Male in RL 2. Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? Yes, long story. I DJ and worked in clubs with crazy events. One such event was gender bending, so I basically traded shapes, etc with my then GF and we went as each other. Well...I must admit I enjoyed it, and when it came time for me to make an alt for "peace and quiet" reasons, I chose female. I use her for that reason, to get away from it all and to shop. I've realized that guys have it bad on SL as far as shopping...lol. 3. Why or why not? I use Aeryn to get peace and quiet. Everyone asks me if I've got lucky yet and I'm not interested in that. I'm not a dishonest person and I don't want to get involved with anyone. I'm also happily in a relationship in SL. I don't really act that differently as Aeryn and hang out with many of the same friends that I do as Crighton. My friends accept this as an idiosynracy I believe, and I'm sure some (probably the guys) think I'm weird. It's cool. I'm comfortable with what I do as Aeryn and I"m not hurting anyone. And damn, it's fun shopping...lol. And, oddly enough, as a man who loves women and baseball and many other manly things, I'm apparently blessed with very good taste in women's apparel and fashion. Who'd have thunk it? 4. Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? Often? I frequently suspect myself as playing another gender. Usually it's readily apparent when I see my breasts and extremely cute ass. 5. Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? No, I don't. I treat them as human beings and afford them that respect. If they are good decent people I enjoy them. If they're dicks I avoid them. Gender and RL/SL switching does not bother me. Edit to say: I may have misread this. I do treat men and women differently in RL/SL just because...well...I like women better in "certain" ways. Like Michael, I'm much more likely to look for a RL pic. Consider me a bad boy too.....errr....bad girl? I'm confused now... 6. Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? I did get a gesture from a guy last night that was probably easier as I'm much cuter as Aeryn. 7. If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? See Number 5. I treat them based on behavior. 8. Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Other games? What are these other games you speak of? Are they in SL?

Gender is an interesting word. It is usually used to refer to one's sex role, as opposed to biological sex. A male crossdresser might have the biological sex of male, but the gender of female. You will probably find more interesting results if you take advantage of the difference between gender and biological sex, and add a few more questions to get more specific about gender. Having done research like this before, I'll let you know that just by tracking sexual preference as an element of gender, you start to find interesting things in your results. From: Azzle Gotter Hi, I'm doing some research for a class I'm currently taking. and I'd like to ask some questions on how people play and what they think about playing different genders. feel free to skip over any questions you don't feel comfortable answering. your avatars name will not be used in the final report.

But any woman that doesn't answer the questions will be found guilty of being a man and sentenced to several weeks of suspicion and snide comments. 1.what is your gender? I like to be difficult so I looked up the word; gen·der2 1. sex When possible 2. Obsolete. to breed. Yes I'm capable 3. Sexual identity, especially in relation to society or culture. Female 2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? I have a male avatar bot that I use to play the piano, given to me by a friend. 3.why or why not? It's cheaper than paying a camper. 4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? People are usually honest about such things with me. 5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? No, but I tell people I will treat you by the character your playing so act the part. 6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? I'm not sure what advantages a male avatar might have so I can't really say if I've used a female avatar for gain. 7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? (See 4. above) 8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? I've played 2 other games like 2nd Life and always as a female.

1.what is your gender? Female 2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? No 3.why or why not? I haven't thought of it. 4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? No. 5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?I treat a Male avaatr as a Male and a Female one as a Female. I'm not sure what the intent of the question is beyond that. 6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? Again, I don't understand. 7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? See Answer 5 8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? I don't play any of those other games. None of them interest me.

1.what is your gender? male
2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? Ok, yes I have, a female.
3.why or why not? To see i could pull it off well. turned out i didn't do very well. shopping for clothing and interacting with guys was hard. I don't let her out of the house now, she's around only for testing perms, etc. Too bad too, she turned out be a real knockout.
4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? Not often, but I have.
5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? Yes, just like in RL.
6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? No, didn't play it long enough to.
7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? No
8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? No
