1.what is your gender?
Female (SL/RL)

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?
All the time.

3.why or why not?
Mentally, I'm very analytical and people online are generally convinced I'm actually male anyway (they often don't believe I'm female even if I use a female character), so it's often easier to have the body fit the impression. Besides, I'm almost always taken more seriously if I have a male character of some kind, whether for game purposes or as a RL professional.

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?
I assume absolutely anyone could actually be played by someone of the opposite gender. I've been surprised in the past and no longer assume that I can tell the difference.

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?
I try not to, but I do. Most people do, whether or not they admit it; I used to deny this utterly until my years of experience online as a 'male'. I even see women differently when I'm behind a male facade, and that was a complete surprise.

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?
Yes. I like being taken seriously.

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?
I try not to. It can throw me though, especially in roleplay, if I know about it. It breaks the illusion.

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?
Again, I do this all the time. In fact, I'm almost always 'male' everywhere online. SL was the first time I really put on a female appearance for a long term use.

1.what is your gender?
Female

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?
Only for making and photographing men's clothes.

3.why or why not?
I'm not really interested in RP.

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?
I suspect some people are but I never speculate on specific individuals.

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?
I hope not.

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?
I don't think so...

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?
I think of her as a woman when we talk in chat and think of him more as a man when we get on voice. It's really just appearances that change not personality or treatment.

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?
When I beta tested TSO I played two characters at once and one was male, one female. for the sake of variety I guess. Both had pretty much my personality but other people did treat them differently.

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?

I originally answered no, but I see a lot of people saying they made an alt of the opposite sex to test out clothing they make or animations. I actually bought a female shape and skin to wear on my regular male avatar for this. So I wanted to resend my first answer.

I only practice this transgender role in the privacy of my SL home, so I can't say I've really played as a female character but I have slipped into the shape and skin to try on apparel I make for females.

:p I was thinking this would be a lot more interesting lol

1.what is your gender? female

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? played, no....created, yes, because I make shapes and I enjoy the process.

3.why or why not? I like being female...I AM female...I see no reason to be anything else...hell I'm not even comfortable being neko or any other form of avatar other then human.

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? sometimes yeah...it can be obvious...other times they tell me, so 'suspect' is not an issue.

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? I interact with individuals....gender is a non-issue. But when I know the gender, I can't help but relate to that person as I would that gender IRL.....regardless of the avatar in front of me. I am not communicating with pixels...I am communicating with another human being at a keyboard.

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? Um, just exactly how would I do that? lol No... I'm too much of a realist to even consider that kind of behavior in a virtual setting.....doesn't compute in my brain.

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat
them differently? See #5.

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?
I've played 1st person shooter games where the character is male and that's no big deal.....it's the only option.....the actions and behaviors are pre-written. However I wouldn't RP a male....I simply have no interest in it.

1.what is your gender? Female

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? Yes

3.why or why not? Wanted to see what it would be like walking around male. How women react to me.

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? All the time.

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? Absolutely not. Makes no difference to me who or what they are.

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? Doubtful. I don't do that in RL so wouldn't do it in SL. Not that kind of person.

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? Nope, don't care at all.

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? Sure, why not? But I'm not familiar with any other games. In fact, I've never been interested in any other "games" like this before and I don't consider SL a "game" per se.

Since this research seems to be about gender roles in SL and how people react to them, in general, gender doesn't mean much to me personally when "playing" or in RL when you come right down to it anyway, even though I myself am a straight female. I don't subscribe to strict gender roles for people and enjoy being around people who are fluid in their sexuality.

1.what is your gender?
female

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?
yes

3.why or why not?
Expediency. I have a male alt to help position poseballs and to go to events where I really don't want to be hit on. He also goes to some crowded meetings -- he has virtually no inventory so is low-lag, and doesn't know anyone so gets no IMs. I wanted to use him to explore different gender roles in SL as well, but haven't gotten to it.

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?
It doesn't usually occur to me to wonder about it, tho occasionally a player's behavior will seem "wrong" for their gender. 'Suspect' seems a vaguely judgmental word. I mean, I "suspect" that kitsune avatars are not foxes in real life as well. So what?

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?
Of course. I try to treat all avatars in a way that is consistent with how they present themselves. I give kid avatars cookies too.

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?
I have no idea what this means.

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?
Differently from what? Sheesh, I hope the paper you write is clearer than this questionairre.

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?
I don't play other games. In fact, lately, I barely play this one!

Insomnia strikes, so:

1.what is your gender?
Female (RL/SL)

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?
I set up a male alt once. Got bored with him after about 20 mins. Plus I couldn't get his shape right - he just ended up looking like a girl.

3.why or why not?
Just to see what it was like being a bloke. Answer: really dull.. (sorry lads :D )

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?
Yes. Mainly the female stereotypes (4-foot long legs / massive norks / orange tan / skimpy clothing / general aura of drag queen - we all know the ones.)

Strangely enough, I rarely see a male av and think "I bet you're a girl in RL"...

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?
No.

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?
No. I don't do that in RL either. ;)

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?
No.

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?
No. I like being a woman - real and virtual :)

Hi, I'm doing some research for a class I'm currently taking. and I'd like to ask some questions on how people play and what they think about playing different genders. feel free to skip over any questions you don't feel comfortable answering. your avatars name will not be used in the final report.

1.what is your gender?
2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?
3.why or why not?
4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?
5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?
6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?
7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?
8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?

1. Physicaly male, mentally female. M2F Transgendered
2. I've played both sexes
3. There's no reason not to. Sometimes women look better in a given gameworld, sometimes men. I've often chosen based on that.
4. I don't think about it, because the idea doesn't bother me at all.
5. No. Never.
6. No? Not intentionally o.o
7. Nope. They are who they choose o represent themselves as in my opinion.
8. Depends on looks, really. Here in SL i have enough customization to look how I really wish I could, so thats my reasoning here.

1.what is your gender?
female
2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?
no
3.why or why not?
i like being me, no motivation to deviate from that
4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?
sure
5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?
yes of course
6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?
i suppose so
7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?
i treat them mostly how they present themselves and want to be treated only when they were honest enough to be truthful about it. but underneath i identify them by their rl gender and any important decisions regarding my friendships are determined by their rl gender not their character in game.
8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?
i would be open to play a male in a game like wow. when its a game where social interactions are important then i would not play a different gender then my own. but i would play a different gender if it was a game not based on social interaction.

1.what is your gender?
I'm a fem.
& GD it why is it if some guy sports a thigh sized prim dick they are over compensating,
but if a fem has big boobs, she's a dude and not some flat ass & chest white girl irl having boobies she's never had but can in SL *grrr*

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?
No.

3.why or why not?
I've thought about it, but I'm too me! & not really committed to the idea,
it's great to be the fem I am, flexing diff aspects of myself.

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?
Yeap.

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?
Some times. Depends how they act. Some of the worse genders are the fake ones.

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?
Nope, "what is given freely is more sweet".

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?
Depends if I like them & some times alt sex players need ppls to believe in their characters. If I like them and they are not trying to whore me up, what do I care.

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?
No, I am here what I am there or anywhere. 'Cept here I have bigger boobage

1.what is your gender?

I assume you mean RL gender? lol My avatar and I are both female.

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?

Yes, I have a male alt.

3.why or why not?

When my husband joined SL, I used to do a lot of demo shopping for him. I'd do a search, bounce around the grid, narrow the field and hand him LMs. It felt weird to put on a male shape to try out demos, so my alt was born. My husband does his own shopping now, but sometimes my alt gets out and about just for fun. It turns out the world does look slightly different through his eyes.

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?

I really don't pay a lot of attention to people's behavior in that sense. I tend to take them as they present themselves. (I did suspect one male friend of being female, because he was acting very evasive and I wondered what he was hiding. Turns out that wasn't it!)

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?

I'm sure I do to some degree - I don't flirt with other women, for instance, and I'd rather have a male dance partner if I'm dancing as part of a couple. In general, I try to treat everyone equally well, regardless of gender (or species...).

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?

In what sense? I have used my male alt when I want to explore uninterrupted, as he seems to get approached less often than I do. Otherwise, I can't think of any way in which I have. Certainly not intentionally.

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?

Why would I? I don't treat my RL transgendered friend differently because of the biology he was born with. Basically, I take avatars at face value and treat them as the gender they present. Knowing someone's RL gender would be one more factor in understanding their perspective and behavior, but it wouldn't change my feelings about them or my behavior toward them. I actually feel RL gender is more fluid and less binary than is generally acknowledged - why should virtual gender be any less so? EDIT: And if someone wants to use the virtual world to explore different gender roles, why should I mind?

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?

Nah, I'm more likely to stick with what I know. I am not, however, UNlikely to play a character of the opposite gender. My biggest concern, in a social game, would be hurting or upsetting friends whose feelings about gender are more... hm... structured... than my own.

Well, here goes ...

1.what is your gender?
Female.

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? On a RL stage I have and will probably do again; in SL No. Even me as a Neko is a female Neko.

3.why or why not? I am a decent boy/girl in Elizabethan drama but never needed to be adult male. (No I lie ... I was a "male" wedding dancer in Fiddler on the Roof. L'chaim! and I was a horny reprobate in a French farce) I look good in boy's clothes and I even look kinda cute but I'd never fool a real man here. Men do things differently. And all men say the SAME things 90% of time in sex - even here. I tend to be more inventive. Maybe all women are. Mind you, I say this in all fairness, this has given me some ideas that I might explore. Androgyny here I come!

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? Yes. Especially tall Divas with bugshot breasts and "two little boys fighting in a bag" bums. I am not sure that women have really gone big on being men.

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? Nope. I treat people same as I would in real life. Bananas worry me, however.

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? Yes. I do so in real also. All the time. We all do, don't we?

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? Nope. I say Good Luck to them coz I know how hard it is on a real stage to try and convince someone you are someone you are really NOT, so good luck, I say! Anyway, it is kinda kinky in an interesting way - people are so wonderfully complicated. Shakespeare would have loved this place.

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? I only play SL. Not sure I wanna play another game.

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? All the time.
5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? No.
6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? In what way?
7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? No. Why should I?
8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? Tell me what "the other sex" would be, and I'll tell you.

I have alts of both sexes. For fun (I know lots of people say SL is not a game, but it's a game to me) - because you get to do in SL what you can't do in RL, so why not try it? And of course I sometimes suspect people of playing a different gender, but at the same time I tend to take things at face value. They want to represent themselves as a guy or girl, none of my business what they are in RL.

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?

I get a bit apprehensive when a guy av approaches my female av, it makes me wonder whether he's going to start propositioning me and asking for sex. But apart from that, no.

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?

Like how?

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?

I don't play any other games.

What I do find slightly unsettling sometimes is when an av frequently changes sex or even species, not by means of an alt. but within the same resident name.

I'm always consistent with my appearance, I do change my clothes and sometimes tie my hair back but that's about all - except I occasionally put on my green plastic bear outfit but that IS just an outfit with me inside it.

Someitimes I think it would be fun to have a Hulk or Frankenstein type avatar I could morph into when I feel angry or threatened. However I never get angry and I am a good kickboxer so I can stay as meee!

OK, leaving aside the normal 'do your surveys properly or don't bother' issues, please get your terminology right. People in SL aren't characters, unless we choose to play one of the RPGs here. Neither are we 'players'. We are people, or if you want to use the LL jargon, 'residents'.

1.what is your gender?
Female

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?
The avatar attached to this account is always female, except for brief switches to test poses etc. I've occasionally presented as male here, but on different accounts. I've sometimes been non-human enough for it to be irrelevant, but I act more or less the same.

3.why or why not?

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?
I'm well aware that people in SL & on the internet present as other genders. Some do it well, some do it badly. There are people here I suspect do this and people I know.

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?
I try not to, but there's a cultural bias that makes it inevitable.

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?
Not that I'm aware of.

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?
Generally, no. Occasionally I've found someone doing it to screw with other people, in which case they are treated as the scum they are.

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?
In a competitive game I might choose a male character if there are social or physical advantages to do so, or it suits the image I want to play. Or I want the challenge of acting like someone very different. Or the game doesn't give me a choice.

1.what is your gender?
Female

2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?
No! Why would I ever want to do that?????

3.why or why not?
Never had the desire or interest!

4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?
Not often, but I'm sure there are many in SL who play their opposite gender. What ever turns them on.

5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?
To a point, yes.

6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?
No! At least not that I'm aware of.

7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?
I'd try to treat them as what they're portraying, but I don't know how successful I'd be.

8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?
No! Not at all! Why? Because I'm perfectly happy being a woman! I have no desire to explore a male's existence.
