I don't know what crullers are.

May I have a plate of crullers please? With gravy?

Cruellers, as far as I understand them, are basically straight donuts with no filling. If, Sandy, you have ever been to Greggs you will have seen them being sold using a specific brand name of "Yum Yums".

We have donuts though. Given that donuts are of German origin and predate 1775, it's no suprise that Europe would have them. Likewise crab cakes, hamburgers and clam chowder - we did it all first.

Also, pikelets are not crumpets. Pikelets are the same thickness as scotch pancakes, but made of the same stuff as crumpets (holes and all).

I don't think you need to. We don't have crumpets do we? Only time I hear them mentioned is when little girls are playing tea time. Would they taste good with canned cheese squirted on them?

Ah, crumpets are full of holes, so .... hold on, does anything taste good with canned cheese?

/me whispers : crumpet has a bit of a double meaning in British English (the real one:)).

We do have American biscuits, sort of. They're called scones. At least that's closest equivalent.

Fancy some gravy (which, oddly enough, is called gravy in the US) with your scones?:)

LOL this is what I mean. They're not really scones either.

In fact they are more like ... cobblers ...

You don't want gravy on a cruller, they are sweet and delicious and gravy would ruin them. We usually call them French crullers. I guess any kind of garbage sounds tasty to Americans if you stick French in front of the name.

Do you guys have crumpets? Or pikelets as my gran used to call them. But she was from the Black Country.

Warm toasted crumpets round the fire on a chilly winter's night. It doesn't get much better than that.

EDIT: Jeez this thread is moving too fast!!!!

Pikelets are thinner than crumpets.

Interesting, you never hear anyone go PHWOAR nice bit of pikelet.

Course if she was from the Black Country they'd have been bostin, right?

Pikelets are the heroin-chic waif look girls of the savoury baked goods world. Men like something to grab hold of - in both their women and their baked goods.

However, the West Country, they prefer Lardy Cakes.

Okay, let's talk about muffins, shall we.

Thanks to you yanks, we now have two kinds of muffins. Your muffin is about as close to a real muffin as a scone is to a biscuit!

How dare you call one of the world's greatest culinary invention an 'English muffin', as if we didn't invent muffins first:)

And I won't even mention crumpets.

Chas

We don't.

We call them muffins. And we call muffins muffins too. We won't go into why they are called muffins?

Best not.

Crumpet needs butter and needs to be served dripping ...

And this thread is so locked :)

The muffin dichotomy bothers me too. Hence the proper muffins being called English Muffins, or "Oven Bottom Muffins". Basically, soft bread rolls á la McDonalds Breakfast Muffin (or their pale imitation of one anyway).

It's the Cor Anglais all over again I tell you!

Marmite rocks my world.

I wonder about marmite and vegans though. Since marmite is about the only decent vegan-friendly source of vitamin B12 (which is necessary to live), and apparently the population is divided roughly half and half those who love it and those who hate it - then that means that 50% of British vegans (all 6 of them) are wondering round with disgusted, Marmite induced, grimaces on their faces.

I'd like to think so anyway - pasty faced hippies.

vegetarians can get their vitamin b12 from eggs and dairy products. I'm talking vegans here. Sorry though, no b12 in vegemite. It's animal protien, marmite or nothing baby!

Cobbler is an interesting one. Glad you brought that up:) In England, a cobbler used to be a savoury dish, like a casserole, covered in, guess what, savoury scones.

Thanks to the yanks, now we have sweet and savoury cobblers. Thanks:)

I think over easy is when they turn it over half way through so that the yolk is evenly surrounded by white on both surfaces. Normal to us is what they call "sunny side up". Strange people. Lovely and quaint; but strange.
