Another thing to keep in mind that's probably already been said, but that I feel is worth repeating, is that a lot of men's clothes in SL are designed by women, and as such have a more effeminate feel to them than most men would like. I was once referred to the following sites to look for men's clothes....

http://fashionplanet.worldofsl.com/

http://www.slmen.com/

http://www.second-man.com/

....and to be completely honest, 95% or more of those clothes I simply wouldn't wear. You can see the female influence in the design. And not just here and there, but blatantly. A lot of men's casual clothing out there is designed for a more "metrosexual" look, and while that's a completely valid fashion style, it's not for everyone. Like I said...it's quality work that looks good....but it's not something I could see myself ever wearing.

I have spent the last three days shopping for men's clothing for myself and have virtually nothing to show for all the time I've wasted.

First, many of the ads on the new search are bogus. You get there and they don't have what they advertise. They advertise men's clothing and when you get there, they have tattoo's and a few other things and not clothes. Thery have two or three pcs of clothing. Or even other's just a few t-shirts and torn jeans.

The thing I see the most is non-mod clothes. If I walk into a shop and I see non-mod clothes, I don't stop to check, I walk right out as I won't buy any clothes non-mod. I have spent too much on clothes that are badly made or ill fitting and since they're non-mod there's nothing you can do to adjust them so you're stuck with them as they are.

I'm not new I've been here a while now so I know about the shops and the clothes. But nowadays they don't have shops like before. The shops now don't have clothes like before. They seem to of gone backwards instead of forward with men's clothes. They're terrible at best.

Only mens clothing worth buying quality wise (that you cant get for free) is gothy and related clothing. Aside from that a man can walk around in head to toe freebie items and most people wouldn't know the difference.

Men do get the shaft on this level in SL I agree.

You are really deluding yourself if you think this. From suits to casual jeans, you get what you pay for.

My largest complaint with men's clothes besides the lack of quality, is pants. PLEASE vendors - mark yer wares - are they low rise or not. I don't want low rise. I often get low rise when i buy because I dint know they were low rise. The solution for me? I dont buy pants anymore unless they are marked. I can tell you just because they dont say LOW RISE does not mean they are not. I want my shirts to meet my pants I aint into that whole show yer navel thing that looks so fine on wimmin but just looks silly on men. Oh and you jacket makers - you know how you make the shirts and tees as hjackets so they cover over the low rise prob? Do something about the butt please. It looks silly to have a nice shirt on that from the front looks nice and when you turn around looks like it is painted directly on yer bumm. The crack aint all that attractive imo. thank you.

Yes there is a fair amount of poor quality freebie, but implying ALL of it is poor is not accurate at all. I had found some very nice freebie items if you take the time and sift though.

With the help of you people here, I am slowly beginning to piece together ny appearance better. I was looking at the other Top 5 tips for newbie and I came across:

http://www.mermaiddiaries.com/2007/01/day-117-guy-for-day.html

It was talking about this "Nora Skin" for only L$1. But I cannot find it at Sarah's anymore. Does any knows where I can find this? And can kindly recommend places for skins and shapes too? Yeah affordables one. =D

Thanks so much.
It's an old post this one from Natalia's blog. I don't know of that "Nora skin". But they have a good freebie in Sarah Nerd called "Cody - skin and shape). It's pictured with an awful yellow hair, but relax, the hair is not a part of the skin and is not in the pack.

Search for "MM skins" in groups and join the group. Open the notices and find a notice from december 23. with has a box attached. Click on "open attachment" that moves the box to your objects. Open the box on a place that allows it. It has both male and female skin, and nice steelblue eyes. (NB! THE NOTICES ARE REMOVED QUICKLY, PERHAPS IT'S ALREADY GONE!)

If you are under 30 days old, a skin shop has free skin for newbies. I really can't remenber the name of the shop, but was it Tete a Pied?!?

For shape, search for SYD (Style Your Destiny). They have 1 L§ shapes that's modify in the second floor. I recommend Brian or was it Bryan? Any shape that's modify can be made more realistic by adjusting the sliders.

The male avatar pack called "Jack in a box" has a nice male shape too. Can be found at Calla, they have both the male and female starter box.

Hair, Gurl6 has a hair called "Boyfriend" in brown and blond. Diversity has a 1 L hair for men too, and both shops give away one ordinary hairstyle (your own choice) to avatars under 30 days old.

There are probably many more, I just mention those i remember :)

If you want to look different from all the "free stuff guys", there are male skins from 500 L§ and up....and that's not much real money. I can mention Tete a Pied again, they have nice skins to 500 L§.

For more free stuff, here is 2 of the blogs I read. They blog a lot of free stuff and there are much more freebies for women than men ;)

But just scroll down a bit and choose from the labels on the right side to narrow it in on men's stuff.

The trick about freebies is to just use what you really like. I have bought L§ and a lot of good clothes, but i still pick up freebies with a good quality.

Just don't wear the painted on white t-shirt, OK?!?

Thanks Marianne Little! That was of great help! I wanted to buy the L$1 Brian shape. But it kept giving me error and refunding me.

L$500 may not seem a lot, but to me is. Cause my currency exchange rate here in Singapore to USD is quite high. So that is why I am looking for cheaper alternatives.

I've been impressed with some of the excellent freebie items out there. I also know that most people who have been on more than a few weeks know them for what they are and take them for what they're worth. Are people judged by this? Just like real life, yes.

Advice Needed.

I searched "Cheap Shape" and I came across:

VILLE DE PANDORE - Pandore (126, 115, 26)

There are some shapes for L$30. Do you thnk it's worth to buy?

I see the shop filled with freebi items yet the owner is charing them. So I want to make sure those skins/shapes are not some freebie items that can be found yet I am (or might) be paying for.

Can help me see? :)

Chances are those 30L shapes are freebie items. Personally, I'd recommend you playing with the sliders yourself until you have a shape you like. Just schedule a day to sit in SL, alone and away from distractions, and work on your shape will you get it to a place you feel comfortable.

Several things...

1. If anyone is offering freebie items for sale you should walk away without hesitation no matter what kind of deal they are offering. They are low life bottom feeders.

2. You can't name names here in the forums so you should go back and remove it. Not trying to police you, just letting you know since you're new.

3. Worth repeating. If you ever see a store selling freebie items. Leave immediately.

Earlier, Marianne Little mentioned that I can get a free shape/skin from, Tete a Pied. I went there but thigns cost me L$300 >>. I am just wondering is there a way that I need to take for me to get it free? And yes, I am below 30 days player.

And if those are freebies, how come I cannot find them anywhere else? It's really cheap and at least not bad. Wondering to spend it or not.

Thanks for all the advices!

I have also removed the name. I did not know I cannot =X

Yeah, you can't mention them here in the "official" forums if you are saying something negative. There's plenty of private forums out there that do allow it.

Did you check the blogs she mentioned? Sometimes there's people you need to IM or certificates, etc for new people to get items for free. Many similar offers exist for hair.

Yes, it was an offer for free skin at Tete a Pied but things change. Posts that are some month old may not be right anymore. They moved into a new sim and have maybe stopped that offer.

I missed those offers myself, didn't know about free skin to newbies before I was too old. But I picked up a free hair at Gurl6 when I was 28 days old :)

They have male hair in a own building, but the notecard to get free hair is inside the section for female hair. No wonder it's hard for men to look good in SL!

Have you tried the free skin from MM skins? I checked the notices for the group today and it's still there. I think it's a good quality skin. Light skin but not pale and nice face without beard.

Don't buy that shape to 30 L§. It's probably a free shape that cost 0 or 1 L§ originally. I agree that you can adjust the sliders yourself, but it's not so easy if the shape is totally ugly from the start. Better to have a nice shape and make small adjustments.

And PS: don't buy ANY shape unless you can modify it! You can like it when you see it, but sooner or later you will want to make small adjustments. Or it doesn't look what you expected when you try the shape and see it on you. And if you can't change it, it's 30 L§ waisted.

That male shape in the male avatar box is not so bad. And it's a male walk in there, a hug and kiss attachment and clothes. Try this shape and the skin from MM skins.
I'm sure it's still at Calla, I saw it there less than a week ago. Search for Calla, and it's to the left inside of the door. Other free stuff too, but for females.

I wish I could do something about that Butt Look, however, there isn't a setting to give bustle to the bottom of a jacket. The only solution is to make the bottom half of the jacket a skirt attachment. Some men go "A skirt?!?!? OMG I'm so not wearing a skirt!!!!" but it's the only way to have an attachment that doesn't suck to your skin.

Also, one can control the tightness and looseness of some clothing items such as shirts and pants in the appearance mode, but I feel when you do this, it makes the clothes very unattractiveI'm sure there are those who could make clothing entirely from prims, but that would be a whole lotta work.

Also, people say "I want cargo pants!!!" When you say that, are you asking for prim pockets on the cargo pants, or just a texture that has additional pockets on it?

edited to remove some funky html that attacked my paragraphs!

M.I.A. has nice cargos in different colors and the prices there are low. Plus, you get 2 or 3 pairs of pants. With belts and without.

If you can't find the lm let me know and I'll send u one.

I should get a commision on this.
