What do you mean by 'the changing way people handle SL these days' Chezza?

People often don't talk as much as when I first started playing. I used to wander about and chat to anyone and everyone - I remember flying around and landing near to people if they didn't look busy and just saying hi - lead to some friendships, more often than not there was just that fleeting pleasant chat.

These days, I don't think I would. The chances of no response are quite high and I think people are often just more insular by comparison. Does that make sense?

Often, not always, thankfully.

@Kyllie OMG yes I have had that very same reaction of "only" being bi. It used to bother me years ago - I think now it serves a useful purpose of alerting me to people I'd rather not waste time worrying about. Your whole post has resonance in fact.

I wasn't around in "The Good Old Days", but it seems to me that people today are pretty friendly and willing to chat.

Yes, I find it difficult to know whether people are more insular now or whether I was just a very annoying inquisitive newbie and have now learnt some manners ...

me: hello, what's this place?
An Avatar: it's my home.
me: what are you doing?
An Avatar: I am trying to IM my BF

etc. etc.

I'm surprised at how many people must never look at the edges of prims in their builds. Almost every build I've seen has at least one exposed face with a texture grotesquely stretched across it and several other prims that are overlapping just enough to produce nasty texture join lines. Folks, all that attention to detail costs is a little bit of time, so why not spend it?

Why people need top wear the "face lights, body lights". They do nothing to make the AV look better when they are going through the AO poses.
I have been tempted to ask the person if they really do think the sun shines out their arse .

Don't be silly. Then they would be wearing Asslights.

Have you tried a face light? I have and I love what it does for my Av. There are no shadows on my av face and she looks awesome whenever and where ever she is. I think face lights are awesome and everyone should have one. I guess its personal preference.

My av needs all the help she can get. Ooook!

(without a facelight I look like a monkey)

Sometimes when modeling clothes for photos from the back you need some light back there.

I'm sorry for your friends experiences, but I can't help wondering why their SL experience is so different from mine.

I have ponder why some people have it harder then others, i.e in rl children living on trash, some kids and Adults have one episode after another in their life that makes them feel put down or bullied, etc while others have never experienced others being critical of them, usually have one success after another, seem to have more positive things happen then negative.
Those people probably would also see SL in same way but I don't know.
But think some people are better at not see mistreatment and only see the good, while others have become more sensitized to looking and experience negative things regardless of their reality SL or RL.
Not sure why I know I tend to see the negative more then positive myself.
I have never been good at creating new realities regardless of the reality I am in.

I had a friend that was slowly going blind in RL. :( The fact that he chose to wear a ton of face and body lights had nothing to do with personal appearance as much as being able to participate in SL until the point he no longer could.

What surprises me the most is when one plays the opposite sex and making people believe you really are that sex. I have known some people this has to happen too. As a result, I have seen and heard the affect that it has on that person when feelings and emotions are involved.

But then again, NOTHING surprises me in SL anymore. All I know is people can be or say anything behind the computer! The questions is how do you play the game?

Surprising but not everyone here is here to cyber or even to be social.
Some are pretty honest about who they are in real life too, more then they need to be.
Some don't share any personal details about who they are in real life.. That their choice.
People get to be whatever they want to be here, and sometimes they don't tell the truth about it and that is between their own conscious or imaginations, they don't really owe any one a explanation.
If its issue for you, may be its not a place to become intimate with others.

QFT :)

Personally, I've found that not hanging around with insensitive jerks helps you not look for the negative. When you are dealing with people who treat you like crap then self protection kicks in.

This year has been wonderful, despite being the most technically "challenging" (i.e. read monitor nearly out of the window), I've had here.

And I bumped into someone I haven't seen for WELL over 2 years last night. Seeing old friends never ceases to amaze me (esp when I find out we've just missed seeing each other on a hundred occasions). SL is both far smaller and far bigger than I can comprehend :)

here's something that surprised me just yesterday ...

I discovered that you can spend two hours bouncing around the mainland roads, stark naked on a spacehopper, without meeting another soul.

I've walked a 45 minute loop round the highways of the eastern side of Jeogeot with nothing on - I met just one person, who was more intersted in where the road led to than what I was not wearing!
