From: Cherry Czervik Yeah but you can say that about any part of the net. Say what? That all the net is an ongoing experiment in the nature of reality? Uh, yeah! From: Cherry Czervik It doesn't matter to me what people do unless I am planning to get jiggy with them anyway! Then Buyer Beware. I firmly believe, though, that if you let someone talk for any amount of time, they will tell you everything you need to know about them. It does take time, though.

From: Pserendipity Daniels Does this mean you *are* simply theorising rather than arguing from rl experience? Uh, yeah. I am not and never have been a man. From: Pserendipity Daniels (An interesting assumption given the propensity of so many sl inhabitants to role play . . .) I honestly don't think people *can* role play for any extended amount of time. I think, in the end, we all are who we are. And even our role play reflects that.

It does take time, though. Good listeners always get laid. In fact, it can be difficult to avoid - people's relief at finding a sympathetic ear can lead to hopes for all SORTS of sympathy! From: Aebleskiver Thibedeau I honestly don't think people *can* role play for any extended amount of time. I think, in the end, we all are who we are. And even our role play reflects that. I disagree with the first part of this statement, and agree with the last part. People can create a completely consistent role-play character that is very different from themselves in opinions and style, and maintain that role-play, exploring its differences from themselves, for years. However, that character will indeed have core elements in common with the player's own character. .

From: Aebleskiver Thibedeau Well, I was thinking along the lines of essential traits, rather than opinion or style. But perhaps it is somewhat dependent on how perceptive you are, and how well you can listen... I think truth will out. I managed to RP a character for a long while when trying to extract myself from something I should never have been in, that character essentially was a holding pattern till I wanted to be myself i.e. Cherry again. It's funny, cos that character was easy to maintain as it was a "wall" which was polite but never quite let anyone really in. She got talking to someone one day who was intregued with her and went back repeatedly to find her (I'd stopped using her by then) and was sad not to re-encounter her. It goes to show that you can't hide your essential nature and that truth will out, because a few weeks later that guy met me as myself and the rest is history ... funny thing is, I remember meeting him briefly and thinking "wow this guy is great" even under the cool reception my alt gave him. LOL. So I suppose one of the things which never fails to amaze me is the upside to the various "sin bins" of SL.

From: Pserendipity Daniels Therein lies the paradox
And of course men prefer the social company of other men to that of women. Were it not for the "continuation of the species" instinctual imperative of mixed-gender sex, which ridiculously for most of us poor males seems to transcend the physical into the metaverse because our limited brains can't seem to fathom the difference, we XY chromosomed apes would much prefer to spend all of our time playing and watching sport, and drinking beer with our mates. The great majority of us just don't want to talk about sex with each other, unless it's boasting, bragging and lying.
Pep (Shopping is NOT a social event for most men) Perhaps for some. I spent seven years in the U.S.Army and that was as much time I wanted to spend with men, in general. I prefer time with my wife in RL, 100 % and frankly, in retrospect, can't for the life of me understand why a woman would want to live with a man, considering what they have to put up with. The converse makes perfect sense... Marriage in RL is generally in favor of men - we get credit for occasionally doing what our wives do all the time. What a deal! (BTW, my wife is more than capable of watching football, basketball or drinking beer. These really aren't hard skills to master and most women can be trained in five minutes or less, especially with sufficient bribes.) As to the males being females, I think a previous poster hit the nail on the head - most are for visuals and more akin to a pimp with his own prostitute in the sex or bdsm areas. It ain't about relationships, at least of more than one to ten minutes at a time.

Today...
I was ofline and a regular customer IM'd me to report a 'situation' that had developed in my shop. So I logged in and found a couple of furries shagging in the middle of the store (actually they were in a temp Prefab demo so had minimal privacy). This didn't suprise me as SL is full of dirty little deviants. However when I ejected them, one of them IM'd me to apologise and paid me L$1000 as way of reconpense. That suprised me.

From: Nika Talaj I am constantly, breathtakingly surprised at the kindness, helpfulness and generosity of utter strangers on the grid.
And in the forums, sometimes, too. . Wait! You're talking about sl? And these forums, too?

From: Aebleskiver Thibedeau Can none of you homophobes grasp that someone of your own gender would have superior knowledge of what a man enjoys, and in a female avi, would have the tools to use it? It could be a very positive thing.
Positive thing for whom? Oh, you mean for those who enjoy that type of thing, ok. But that's just for a certain group. You can't expect all guys to accept this. But then when they don't play along they're [we're] labeled homophobes, right? I can live with that.

From: Rhaorth Antonelli what surprises me is how rude, crude and crass some folks can be and the total disregard for the rules on another person's property, especially if said property is a business (SL or RL business doesn't matter, rules are rules) Now this is the sl I'm talking about. The sl we've come to enjoy and love. See, Antonelli, knows the real deal.

From: Ricardo Harris Positive thing for whom? Oh, you mean for those who enjoy that type of thing, ok. Yes, exactly. For men who enjoy sexual pleasure. From: Ricardo Harris You can't expect all guys to accept this. OK, but what do you do it for then, if not pleasure? (/me wonders if she really wants to know this....) BTW, Ricardo, thank you for illustrating the point I was trying to make further on in the thread, i.e. that if you let someone talk long enough, they will tell you exactly who they are. In fact, they will demand to tell you who they are, whether you want to know or not.

Aebleskiver, have you ever hung out in the Gay areas as Nan in SL? Heck just go wear male avatar, don't change anything in some places you'll get sex too depending on how out of it the Guys are hanging out in those locations if that's all you want. Homophobia, Sexism and the other prejudices exist there too and just as shallow and bit more subtle except they are identify as Gay Men. Want to see something really weird show up as Male or someone who is not out as in those groups as Female to Male transsexual in some of those Lesbian places that welcome all types including hermaphrodites and be told you're not welcome. Depending on where you go no one is relating to anyone, its all pose ball, nothing deeper. There are good. caring, intelligent, sensitive People and shallow, uptight and unpleasant People every where.

From: Aebleskiver Thibedeau Huh? You were discussing homophobia. Trust me homophobia exist in SL even amongst the Gays. Some are more worried about getting it on with female accidentally passing as guy. There are just as uptight about it as straight guys too.

From: Aebleskiver Thibedeau I'm flabbergasted by the amount of real life homophobia men bring to SL, and, yes, I do think it's largely a male issue. There's seems to be an enormous amount of energy given to obsessing about whether the woman next to them is really a woman (or a man in rl), and to discovering new ways to determine that. WTF is that? Can none of you homophobes grasp that someone of your own gender would have superior knowledge of what a man enjoys, and in a female avi, would have the tools to use it? It could be a very positive thing.
And I am appalled by the tales of the continuous, ongoing harassment my gay friends endure. It makes me want to commit bloody murder. Is this not the twenty-first century? I was referring to this post you wrote. It exist even in the Gay and Lesbian communities here because it exist in RL. Gay, Bisexual and even some or majority straight men its not about giving pleasure though in my opinion its just about the pose balls and the fantasy, often 95 percent its nothing about anything except the Male hormones. High Testosterone driven guys are well equip to be self serving, they don't need to do anything special to give pleasure. If woman is in the picture her only use is a fantasy, they don't care what she wants, all they care is if she is available and fits in fantasy. Unless women gross them out. Lesbian scene pretty much is similar except they are more uptight about Men regardless if he is hiding behind a female avatar and majority maybe rl men posing. Women can be just as shallow and uptight they just have other reasons behind it.

From: Cherry Czervik Personally if someone is a man in a dress I'd prefer to know that beforehand, so I can choose if I wish to engage or not. A lot of the net dislikes this particular form of misreprisentation, it seems to be touted as a virtue in SL. It's still lying just like any other form of lie. OK, so let me see if I can understand this - if a female is playing a male avatar, and refuses point-blank to talk about their RL (i.e. neither confirming nor denying their RL sex) is this lying or misrepresentation, in your opinion? If so, where do you draw the line? If someone has bigger boobs in SL than they have in RL, is that misrepresenting themselves? If a guy sports a six-pack but is in fact a bit porky in RL, what then? I guess I approach SL with the attitude that what you see is what you get - I treat them however they represent themselves: men as men, women as women and small, furry creatures from Alpha Centauri as small, furry creatures from Alpha Centauri. After all, if they are entering SL looking differently from their RL, then they are doing it to experience life as that, and not to be questioned or judged about their RL, no?

I always wondered about that... How would/does a gay/lesbian group respond if one of theirs is outed as a gender-bender? Is it a bannable offense for some? Or does it lead to an air of doubt about the persons feelings? I wonder, how many after their partner comes out, thinks to themselves "Oh my gawd! I'm Bi now!" then go take a rapeshower. (^_^) Guh... Sorries peoples.... This is as bad as I get. I can't believe I'm saying "rapeshower"... TWICE now!!! (=_=)y
