From: Colette Meiji Since the global capitalization of the information age took off. Compared to the value of money spent on Computer related businesses and the E-business giants, 18 billion is niche. Google is valued at around 200 billion. Microsoft is estimated to have a value of over 250 billion. etc. Um, you're confusing Industry with Markets (and showing your age, grammy). The Gaming market pulls in more than other forms of entertainment. I think Blizzard can attest to that. In case you're too old to know/care about it, thats the company that makes World of Warcraft. Without Microsoft, Apple, or Linux, none would exist. They run the Industry. All others take advantage of what they made to create a Market. The film industry makes less than the game industry. Dont confuse Industry with Entertainment. Two different economies. While Google is quite the Juggernaut, its one of the few exceptions. Yahoo used to be the Juggernaut Search Engine about 15 years ago. Life on the Internet is quick to come & go. LL is quite a small fry in the scheme of things. SO! How many Billions have you pulled in with SL???

From: Amaterasu Cinquetti Personally I doubt the majority of SL users are Gamers. Most real Gamers I know in RL think SL sucks and is pointless and boring. The vast majority of people I have met in SL are either graphics or computer professionals that spend their time in SL making content of some type. People who see SL as nothing more than a financial investment and use it as such. And by far the greater number those that see SL as a social platform/chatroom, many of whom have previously been YIM, AIM, or MSN users before migrating to SL. Of these groups the only one that may have a top level computer are the graphics/computer professionals. The rest may or may not have depending on how recently they have had to upgrade/replace their old computer. They are also highly unlikely to want to have to spend hours tweaking their preferences to make things look better. You nailed it! Go to: http://www.mmorpg.com Find their Game List. Find Second Life. Read the Forums. Most gamers really do think SL is a crappy "game" with dated graphics and a lot of perverts. Plus, most gamers have grown up on fast paced, twitch games. Which SL isnt. According to sales charts, SL is far far FAR from taking the world over by storm: http://vgchartz.com/ As a gamer, I find SL a nice change of pace. Like leaving a fast-paced city to stay a weekend in the country side.

SL is a simulation.. not a game people.
And for those looking for "gamers" in SL. Check out these places:
CCS sims Nor sims Gor sims DCS sims starwar sims racing sims
The list goes on..
SL is nothing like halo 3.. but then again SL was never ment to be. It was ment to be a simulator from the start.

This new versioon sucks, all slow motion. I have a powerfull computer (amd 64 double cor, abit fatality) and graphics card ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2) with newest driver. No memory problems.
Back to former version all fine.

From: Tod69 Talamasca LL is quite a small fry in the scheme of things. Right. But part of the vision is that eventually games will run on "the 3D web" or nobody will want to bother with them. That's a few generations of bandwidth and computing power from now, obviously, and plenty of opportunity for "the 3D web" to change hands a few times before then. But, you know, the standalone games industry was bigger than the Internet, too, back when the "Internet" was a bunch of decsystem 20s on the ARPANET. Since then, the game industry has grown immensely, and yet represents a microscopic bump on a niche compared to the Internet as a whole. They may be all wrong, of course, but LL's angels see a potential growth curve that will, again, leave games in a relative backwater, even if they maintain current growth. It's not a totally impossible prospect.

I've made as many billions as you have I am sure Video games are is the most HYPED industry on google searches, not the biggest entertainment industry. That 18 billion number is splattered all over every keyword. You need to dig deeper. For example Home video is a 20+ billion dollar a year industry. With Ticket Sales of Movies around 9 billion Television 22 billion The Music industry only recently beaten by "video game sales" Still it seems you are confusing how much the industry makes with what makes up a niche demographic. ------------------- I doubt true "gamers" even make up the majority of Video Game Industry sales. Not in the sense they buy current high-end PC game titles and have up-to-date gaming PCs, which is what we are discussing on this thread. Now if you want to (for example) say every PC owner who owns a copy of the "SIMS" is a gamer, then we are really not discussing the same thing at all. In the same way that everyone who buys DVDs isn't a movie buff.

From: Sommerland Starostin My facelight doesn't even work now. Might as well not even wear it. WHAT WAS THE BENEFIT OF THIS UPDATE...except to screw things up even more??? Turn local lighting on.

settings

From: Johan Durant My default settings had me mightily confused for a couple hours because people were rendering terribly until a friend explained to me about avatar imposters. Man I turned that new feature right off; LL should really think about changing how the client sets graphics on first installation. Like, the imposters are an attempt to reduce lag when a lot of people are around, but this fix is worse than the problem. Thank you John! I could not figure out why everyone looked so horrible! I will go and tweak that now. I agree, having everyone running a different client is troubling. I enjoyed the fact that everyone was seeing the same thing as I was...but that was gone right away when they introduced the day/night settings. I remember being in SL when night fell; not much you could do except stumble around However, at least you knew 'everyone' was stumbling. Now, we ask people to turn on night or day for certain events and hope to god they know how to do it I have to agree tho, this is just one more learning curve and I for one love the challenge; I'm just happy that there is an SL to complain about

I think what LL is planning on in the future with Windlight is to have settings automatically downloaded to your viewer from the sim you are visiting. This is so that the urban decay sims can preset moody, fog laden atmospherics, Beaches can have great sunrises and sunsets, etc... They are expecting the content creators to include this stuff as part of the build I think. The end result will not be that we all have to know the minutae of making our own Windlight settings, we are just on another of a long line of stepping stones to the end result. Unfortunately being on stepping stones is always uncomfortable for some.

Lol I float ever so slightly above the stones Actually there are many times I curse Windlight too, my prediction is not because I am so enthused by it just because I remember a blog posting that stated something about eventually sharing settings, being able to buy/sell them and extrapolated from that.
