Why can't they leave well enough alone? The new "environment settings" are ridiculous! Sunrise and Midnight are horrible now!! Seriously who is making these decisions??

Some geekheads on serious mind-altering drugs is my guess.

People with absolutely no customer service skills. There should be a choice of which viewer people have to download and the differences should be explained but basic customer support would appear to be a bridge too far for Linden Lab.

There's only a benefit if you actually read how to use the sliders and adjust settings. That has been explained all along and they have been trying to prepare folks. Face light works fine ... no different from what I can see...But then again I always use windlight and always adjust settings and sliders to get optimum affect. I really have no idea what the 'default' should look like cause I never liked it to begin with and now i don't have to see it.
*shrug* It's worth ging back and reading the tutorials about the settings and preferences....lotta good tips and info there. Or don't. But I'm guessing as technology changes and improves....they are going to continue to adjust along with it. Everything else changes.....computers...cell phones, gaming systems... anything with any technology attached to it, changes. Cyber worlds are going to be at the top of the evolution line in that respect. But you can still run the old client...there's even a link in the blog to it so folks don't 'have' to use the newer version if they don't want to. |

Milla, I don't understand what you are talking about. What settings do I need to adjust? Everything has worked fine until now. Where do I find this information? |

Milla, I don't understand what you are talking about. What settings do I need to adjust? Everything has worked fine until now. Where do I find this information? You are going to have to open the advanced options in your graphics settings and adjust all the sliders to get it to work more like what you are used to. The basic install for me gives me a "low" setting which is worse than the old client. The low defaults with "local lighting" turned off .. which sounds like what happened to you. You'll need to turn that back on and find other settings to get it back to where you were. Unfortunately it doesn't just translate what you had before. |

Sommerland, are you saying that you embraced change, and it touched you inappropriately?
If so, see Brenda Connolly. She may commiserate. ![]() |

Is this in Preferences? Logging onto SL and having to do a MANDATORY update after having some TGIF couple of drinks at the local bar is NOT the time for this. I have no idea why they felt the need for these updates in the first place. What ARE these people thinking?

What ARE these people thinking? yes Preferences one of the graphics settings tabs It will probably say "low" and then you can click on a button in that vicinity and it will expand to custom sliders. |

Ok. I think I got it back to some semblance of how it was before. At least enough to feel comfortable for the moment. Thanks Colette for your help smiles.

If you are using the atmospheric shaders, then go to World/Environment Settings/Environmental Editor. Choose Advanced Sky. From there you can load a preset that you may like (I just love incongruent truths) or create your own. You can customize every feature of lighting, color, sun appearance, position, etc. Sure there is a learning curve and it will take some time, but you can get the exact look you like.

Also.....as far as the sky settings in environmental editer...
Yes it takes practice....don't be afriad to mess around cause you can always go back to default....and if you like somehting, you can save what you've done. One of the things that can make a HUGE difrence in how your sky and lighting appear is the sun/moon position. Not so much the moon.....but the sun position.....and east & west placement. Depending on where you are......how 'high' you are.... the placement of the sun is going to impact the atmosphere aLOT.....as well as your avatar. Which way you are 'facing' is going to matter. If you are taking photos....a good trick is to go into that setting and move the sun until you are happy with the lighting on your face or on your subject. As a photographer (RL and SL) this is a big deal......where the sun is....how high the sun is..... in SL it seems that the opposite rule can apply. In photography.....rule of thumb is to have the sun behind the photographer....to give the subject optimum lighting....In SL it is very often the case that things will look better with the sun behind the subject....or to one side. Playing with those two particular sliders can make a world a difference. This is something I didn't mess with too much when windlight first came out.....but now...after realizing just how much it effects the atmosphere....I use it all the time for photography especially. The good news is......once you have a sky setting you really enjoy......you don't have to necessarily have a day night cycle. You can just leave it. Or...you can mess around with the day cycle and create your own. Yeah, it takes practice...but think about it folks...so did learning to chat, ...or edit yourself....or change clothes...or fit your hair just right.....or drive your cool motorcycle or build your house.... SL has always been all about the user creating his or her own experience... part of having that luxury, is that we have to learn a little bit as we go along. |

There's an old client here:- http://www.activeworlds.com/ Yea I suspect some people would rather run a Black & White version of the 2004 viewer if they had the choice............. _____________________

Me thinks that if the only way to get a decent in world experience is to do massive tweeking of the preferences, that the client is seriously flawed. One should not have to read a manual and spend time tweeking to engage in a virtual world experience. That line of thinking will soon lead to a world devoid of average citizens. _____________________
