I didn't give much thought to my name when I chose it. When registering, you have to choose your name before you know anything about SL, so you don't realise how important your name can become.

Having said that, I'm very happy with my name and my public wouldn't want me to change it:D:D

I keep hearing a Steely Dan song in my head. (^_^)

I love that song.

Nope. This was one time that I was paying attention in class. At the name selection screen it said to choose carefully because I would be stuck with that name. So I did.

I have been seriously considering switching to my alt, who has a better name. But he doesn't have all of my cool stuff.

"CX" (a stupid name?)

I love my online name. :D

I chose it when signed onto my first internet online venue and have used it ever since. On IRC (and AOL/Prodigy, etc.) no last names were required so I have always been "Czari." On IRC I was known as the Royal Russian Redhead.

For SL, I tried to find a Russian last name to match it.

~ ~ ~

Interestingly, my RL first name is a made up family name that is so unusual if I had used it for an online nick, no one would guess it was my RL name. If I didn't like my RL name so much, I would consider legally changing it to Czari.

I did have a license plate once that was simply: CZARI

I was a bit more rash, picking a last name, then plucking the first out of the sky. It ended up being perfect.

I often wish I could change my name. I picked it for a not-so-positive reason, and I've been stuck with it ever since.

When I started in SL, I didn't like the fact that I had to choose a last name from a list. I wanted to make up my own. I understand now, of course, why the naming system is set up the way it is, but at the time, I didn't get it. I was so annoyed by it, I actually put off joining for three weeks. But it was a requirement for a class I was taking, so eventually I had to. (Wow, imagine if I hadn't. I would have missed out on so much. My whole life would be completely different now. I wonder what I'd be doing.)

When it came down to the wire, and I finally had to make a choice, I saw the word "Few" on the list, and I thought to myself "OK, I've chosen 'Few'. Get it, 'Chosen Few', you stupid f@#$'ing naming system. Oh, aren't I clever."

For a while, it was a pretty good name. Back when there were only a few thousand people in SL, of whom maybe a couple hundred or so were regulars, pun-based names were interesting (because everything was new and interesting then), and I used to get "Hey, great name" comments all the time. So I thought it was cool.

Now we're approaching five years later, and I'm more than a little sick of "Chosen Few" by now. It's long outlived its funniness (if it ever had any to begin with), and I think it probably makes people assume I'm some sort of religious zealot or or cult leader or something. It's quite difficult to explain to people outside of SL why I would decide to call myself something like that. It just sounds weird. But I've got too much history with this name to switch to an alt, so I live with it.

I really wish I'd been paying better attention when the surname Futile was available. I totally missed it. I saw someone with it the other day, and I said "I'd give my right arm to be called Resistance Futile". Get it, "give my right arm", "resistance futile", you stupid f@#$'ing naming system. Aren't I clever?

I did manage to snag a couple of good ones over the years. I've got alts called Klingon Warrior, ExtraHot Chickenwing, a few others. They just sit there, though. Too many people know me as Chosen. It would be so difficult to switch.

I also managed to grab my RL last name when it came up, but I kind of blew it on the first name, so I never use it. I should have gone with my first two initials as a first name. Instead, I spelled out my whole first name and tacked the middle initial on the end. Not sure what I was thinking there.

I normally make it a point to keep first names genderless, so that it doesn't seem weird to wear avatars of different genders. If your first name is just a word, you can change your av's gender or species any time the feeling moves you. Whatever you happen to feel like looking on any given day works just fine. But if it's a real name like Steve or Susan or something, and you're wearing the wrong gender, people treat you a little differently.

By the time I realized I'd messed up by using my real first name, the surname was no longer available, so I was stuck. Opportunity missed. I probably would have finally let Chosen Few retire if I had done the RL surname thing properly.

Yes, I kinda regret it. When I made this name, I had no idea that Flo was a girl's name. I actually got this name from a drummer from the band Cryptopsy, he's called Flo Mounier.

sort of... back when the web side reserved names before finishing the account creation process I entered a name I wanted and then lost the page in a disconnect... came back only to find the system had locked the name out of use ::shrug::

but then I ended up with this name, which suits me better I think, and vastly better than the original I chose for kinship with someone else...

nope not at all, originally i chose it for RP reasons as i'm a massive fan of Xanth. Now it's just who i am. i think it suits me and i'v never even thought about a change even tho alot about myself and crunch has changed since i signed up. the last name i chose because my original AV has it and it just kinda fits.

I chose my first name before joining and picked the last name to match it. It gets butchered a lot in Voice (it's prononunced "El-Adrienne";), and folks usually just shorten it to "Ela" or "Elad". My nickname is Elle--as it is in RL. I've had a lot of folks ask if I'm French (no) or even if it's Elvish (no?). I love my name.

I gave my name almost no thought at all. I picked Whitfield from the list, grabbed a book of saints' names that was handy, and tried each female one until I found one that wasn't already taken. BTW, the book listed the names according to their feast day, not in alphabetical order, so Petronilla was one of the first few I tried. Sometimes it's a little long for people to type--"Pet" works as a nickname--but I couldn't imagine any other SL name at this point. My SL name feels as integrated as my birth name by now.

Every time someone addresses me as "Strangle," yes. ^^

...Followed closely by an increasing urge to do exactly that, but never mind.

Also, the fact that hubby and I can't have the same last names really bites, frankly. :(

Only briefly, when about a year after I started, I saw the name "Kiwi" come up on the list. I'd have paid to swap my name to Karl Kiwi. Other than that, no I'm quite happy with my name as it is.

I really wanted Virginia. When I signed up, no matter how silly the last name, it wouldn't allow me to take it although it kept telling me "name available". Thus, the two Rs, just as a way of getting the name. Anyway, I thought "no biggie" as the last online game I played allowed name changes all the time (which got a bit confusing, to be honest). Then I discovered names couldn't be changed.

So, I sent LL a very earnest note, explaining my situation, and asking them to fix the name, as it was clearly some odd glitch during sign up that prevented me from getting the name I wanted. I know, I know, looking back I laugh at my naivety, too.

But, to be honest, I'm rather used to the name now. I suppose it's like RL names, we just become accustomed to it.

My name is exactly what I wanted.

Because this isn't the first me. ;) I made a completely stupid name at first, and after a few days I realized I really liked SL, so i started over. :p Only a chosen few (no pun intended) know the original me. :)

I picked my name because it was my RL nickname when I went to college. My nickname was Yeso Kid, but I thought Kidd was close enough. Recently, I made an alt and was able to get my RL name. Using the SLName selection site one day I noticed that my RL last name was available. I quickly created an alt and was able to get my RL first and last name. I dont tell any one that it is my real name but it is cool. Has any one else been able to get their RL name as their SL name?

I love my name and my other one too ;)

Seriously some good advice was given further up - make an alt, transfer what you can and dump the account you hate asap before you have too much invested in it. A lot of people see their first account as a throwaway to learn how it all works and make the mistakes they are bound to make so it is not that unusual.

I actually answer to Desmond in first life now, if someone says it verbally, and it's tough not to sign my RL biz correspondence the same way.

I am the same way.

My real first name is distinctly different but culturally nondistant (like say, Hamfist and Bonebrow are distinct but comparable). My personality seems to fit, the name too, but I guess that is really up to all of you to decide.[/QUOTE]

Well, Guv'nah, now ye's got us all curious. Up for game of Where's Desmond, anyone? :D

Yes. Constantly. Not Trout; I like Trout. I hate Recreant. I'd give just about anything reasonable to change it, but I have so much invested in this account that I just can't change it. Everything I have that's good is no transfer. It blows.

Meh. There are a lot bigger fish to fry, so to speak. I'm not going to let it get me down.

it doesn't have to "mean" anything to you. you picked it because you liked the way it sounded. and it has a nice ring. you don't have to attach the literal meaning of the word to your name.

Yes, I got tired of my first Avatar name, no one could spell it, and altho the first and last name sounded good together, my name didn't really say who I was. So I made an alt, love my name, and now Maitri only gets to come out to give me her stipend. Pretty soon, I'll downgrade her account, and make Allegria the premium member, and she'll just be the silent second partner in my land group.

I was in the account long enough to make the transition a lttle painful. There are still some items in my home belonging to Maitri like my SZ Fabrique piano, and some non-transferrable clothes I still mourn over occasionally...
