Kitchen? LOL
I never do kitchens or bathrooms in my SL homes....it just seems useless. The closest I've come is a cool low japanese table & chairs.....but I do my interiors purely for aesthetics and ambiance. I also like to make the landscaping as suited to the feel of the home as possible. That's just how I like to do it......lots of folks do kitchens and baths but I just never found it appealing or useful in SL. Cripes...even my bedroom is gathering dust. lol

From: Chris Norse Ken? I am GI Joe with the action KUNG-FU grip! Uh, I had a Big Jim as a kid. He was so short he was always staring down Barbie's....erm....cleavage. But he could do the karate thing, too, and whack Barbie.... I have a Victorian bathtub with water and everything, and a Victorian toilet, too. Unfortunately, they're very primmy, and I haven't yet put them up in my new house. They were fixture in my old house tho. I also had and still have sad excuse for a kitchen, just because it feels more like "home"-a cool one prim gas stove, a fridge, a marble sink, a one prim coffee maker (no coffee, sorry) and a spice rack.

I think the whole reason to have rooms in a house is to have an excuse to run animations on the avatars. Without a bath, you don't have any place to put the nice couple shower and bath animations! (I know there are nice dishwashing and food chopping anims, too, but somehow those activities aren't foremost on my list of things to do in SL. Nor RL, for that matter.)

Of course being gay my Big Jim was busy with his friend Big Jack. They did spend a lot of time in their camper, you know.

From: Elora Lunasea So, does anyone else have these extra 2 rooms in their home? How did you manage to stay within your prim count? I have both a kitchen and a bathroom in my house. I even have a laundry room with a washer and an ironing board. I'm lucky to have enough land so the prim usage was not really an issue.

Besides, I have a thing for diners - being from New Jersey and all I'm going to be able to have more inworld time than recent weeks in the next few days leading into Turkey Day, I'll give you a IM to come over. Thanks for the invite.

Just depends on what you want out of your SL home. Plenty of people view home as a place to go off and cuddle with their sweeties, so less "cuddle friendly" rooms might seem unnecessary. (The more "acrobatic" varieties of cuddling-related activities, where countertops and large appliances might be welcome, aside. Ahem.) Others want to hang out and entertain friends, so several varied conversation areas are of paramount importance - and maybe room for social games or outdoor activities. Yet others derive pleasure from creating intricate "dollhouse" style replicas of RL homes, or equally intricate fantasy homes down to the smallest detail. It's all good

Almost all the houses I offer have kitchens and baths. (I also sell iron and ironing board laundry sets!)
When visiting friends in their houses, we often do a lot of sitting around their kitchens.

I generally see these things as unnecessary prims, generally. I built a shower for my own home, but it's... ahem, functional. So is the bath. There is no toilet. But they are cool to look at, especially when they are scripted and light up/move!

From: Elora Lunasea So, does anyone else have these extra 2 rooms in their home? How did you manage to stay within your prim count? I know sculpties will help a lot. I have 345 available to me, which sounds pretty great at the moment, but things have a way of getting out of control real fast I've heard. Thanks!
Before giving up on the bathroom, look at Ramos Designs. Trojan Ramos has produced a wide variety of colors and styles with all fixtures fully working, animated, and with very reasonable prim counts: Bathtub, 9 prims; sink, varies by style. Mine is elaborate and is 16; toilet, 11; freestanding paper holder 11; mirror, 1. Alternate to the bathtub is a two-person shower by Susan Ramos, very roomy and nice, prim count is about 19, depending on decoration. Hoffman Designs has a terrific variety of kitchens. You can get a very nice arrangement in about 30 prims (working doors, too). And yes, although not used much, both rooms make the house look complete.

Showers are nice but waterfalls are better Oddly, my desire to defile the butcher block doesn't carry over into SL, but still i have found one use for part of a kitchen. A friend come over to talk seriously once, so I dusted off a breakfast bar thing with two stools and nice animations - god knows where i got it,but i know it was free - and when she showed up i was behind it and rezzed a plate of goodies and some tea. We sat on the stools, drank green tea, and talked. It was very nice. Hmmm ... maybe I'll build one for my current place. As for prims ... well, a 4K is ideal!

From: Nika Talaj Showers are nice but waterfalls are better I know! I found one the other day, don't remember the name of the store (I did landmark it) which had a very elaborate 2-person bathing animation in it. My first thought was "wonder if I can fit this IN the house?".

From: Okiphia Rayna Kitchens and bathrooms use prims with basically nothing in return.. the only thing I can think of either being used for is sex and...well..thats it. Unless you have sex alot in SL and want more space to do it theres really almost no reason to have it aside from looks, and those prims can be better put to use elsewhere. Everything in SL serves no purpose other than to look pretty or please someone. Whether someone has a 200 prim kitchen, a 200 prim statue, a 200 prim garden, or a 200 prim dock for their boat really doesn't matter, it's all equally unnecessary. However, if that person gets whatever kind of enjoyment then it's worthwhile to them and really not anything someone else should be casually dismissing. Ironically my kitchen and bathroom are usually the two rooms that get the most positive comments, less so for any other room. In all, a third of my prims probably goes to little tidbits that serve no purpose whatsoever except to make my house(s) feel like I "live" there instead of just being a showroom display (teddy bear on my bed, changing screen in front of my pose stand, little cactus figurine on a shelf, photo frame on another shelf, candles, glasses/plates on the table, magazines on a side table, etc). I'm sure plenty of people would take a look at my house and point out that I have 700ish "garbage" prims all over that could be put to far better use, but I happen to like my "garbage" prims and that's all that really matters.

My partner, Melissa King, built it and if you want a copy come to my home (Griffin 7, 204, 34). It's free to copy but you will have to buy your own poseballs. There is a free outhouse here too with sit animations. Don't forgrt to take copies of the doors.

Then again, most RL houses don't have a dungeon (cough, cough) so it's even.
