So here I am about to embark on creating my first home here and I got to wondering about something.
I've noticed that most homes here in SL don't have kitchens or baths. The obvious answer is, who needs them? Nobody uses either of those facilities (unless you have a bathroom or kitchen related sex fetish I guess).
And then there is the prim problem. You could use them up in a flash I bet.
But, as someone who is in the design field in RL, (plus I'm a bit of a minor dollhouse geek)I'm kind of bothered by this. I found a 1BR prefab home I love, not too many prims, not very expensive and it has a bath and kitchen area to boot. This is making my head swim with possibilites and yet I'm terrified I'm going to go overboard real fast if I use this house. Between those two extra rooms, plus all the landscaping I have in mind, well, you all know the deal.
I think I can keep it manageable if I pay attention to what I purchase. Maybe I'm deluding myself.
So, does anyone else have these extra 2 rooms in their home? How did you manage to stay within your prim count? I know sculpties will help a lot. I have 345 available to me, which sounds pretty great at the moment, but things have a way of getting out of control real fast I've heard.
Thanks!

I was going to put in a kitchen... but then decided I needed the room for more bloodflow.

Well, the kitchen should have worked for that. You could have just put in a larger sink, no?

I think the idea of a kitchen and bath in SL is absurd, but it's your world and your imagination so if it makes you happier then do it. I see plenty of houses that have them but they are usually bigger houses for bigger lots with larger prim counts.
As for me, I put in a small, cute house and put all my energy in landscaping since virtually all my time is spent outside anyway.

My home has *always* had a kitchen and a dining room. They are social spaces in my home, just like in RL - a place where the household gathers to chat and informally socialize with each other and with close friends.
My homes usually do have a spa or bathtub, or some sort of pool. Usually they have a shower. Again, these can be social spaces for more intimate bonding, even if never used for sex per se. It's a fun bonding experience to just share a bath or a shower with my Partner.
Toilets? No, I never bothered with these.

See, that's part of my dilemma Bradley. The landscaping matters to me too. I also garden a lot in RL, so between the two things, I'm caught between a rock and a hard place. Trying to figure out which is more important. I kind of thought, maybe I'd do the bathroom for sure, since the space is right off the bedroom and there is just nothing else it possibly could be. And as mentioned above, I do enjoy sharing a bath/spa experience with a loved one.
The kitchen area, leads into the deck, and I suppose it could just be dining space.
Saving prims for all the tropical plants is a major concern (it's beach/waterfront). I intend to keep a lot of it very pristine beach, but some of the palm trees I've seen do have a lot of prims. Let alone the patio furniture, etc.
I could go with a smaller home, I am still toying with this. There was another one which was 1/2 the prims of the one I love, adequate, nice and it was actually free. I'll have to rezz it and see how it looks. If I'm lucky, maybe it will suffice and then I can just go hog wild on the outdoor stuff and forget about the eating and bodily functions lol.

Trying to figure out which is more important. If you're like me you probably like changing things from time to time. That's something to consider. There aren't that many kitchen options in SL, but you'll find unlimited landscaping opportunities.

I think kitchens and baths can be considered a place to relax the same as a garden with a swing or a gazebo. They're not my cup of tea, but it's whatever you want. There's some very nice low prim showers and baths out there. You just need to lay off the little shampoo bottles and accessories to save prims.

From: Elora Lunasea I'm caught between a rock and a hard place. Trying to figure out which is more important. Design yourself the perfect bathroom. Go crazy on the prims... Then stand outside the bathroom and take a snapshot Delete the bathroom and replace it with a single prim in the doorway textured with the snapshot. Then just tell everyone it's a private bath, and they need to use the bushes.

Eating and pooping takes up too many prims.
Seriously, many or most of my tenants in the larger units set up kitchens and baths.
There was another thread a few weeks ago along the lines of "Why so many kitchens and baths?"

I have a bathroom in my skyhouse right now, but no toilet. The shower is only 11 prims, I think, and the hot tub isn't too many. Then a cabinet that is only 1 prim. You CAN have a bathroom and kitchen with very few prims. I don't have cabinets, etc in my kitchen....it just has a bar with stools. You can get them for pretty low prim....and still have a "dining area" feel. Whenever I buy furniture, I look for days sometimes, look every place possible, and landmark or make notes on the ones I really like. I compare prims (1st), money and poses, etc. If you're very careful, and shop around, you can find the best deals and stay low on prims with nice things. It is possible, and I think a house just looks better with those areas.

I had to put the kabash on that hobby! SL is far cheaper and more sociable, although at least I've made a nice investment in those

I know this will keep me on track!

My house is too small for a bathroom or kitchen so we solved that by putting an outhouse behind the house along with a solar powered outdoor shower. We cook on a campfire in front of the house.
I can't imagine living at a place without these things. It makes my home seem like a real home.

You might be able to have two rooms: one main, permanent room, and one morphing room. If you are sitting on your main room couch, and want to do some virtual cooking, you click the kitchen button. Inside the morphing room, whatever was there gets replaced by the kitchen. When the rezzings all done it signals you. You get up from the couch and walk over to the kitchen.
So, you have your sauna, your kitchen, your workroom, etc. but only one roomfull of prims at a time.

What's the bets that someone in SL is selling a range of sex-cookers? Not to my taste of course. Dishwashers maybe, depending...... but cookers? Nope!

One of my good friends has a kitchen.. she's going to remodel and remove it. Why? She has never, ever used either the kitchen or the dining room table for anything.
Kitchens and bathrooms use prims with basically nothing in return.. the only thing I can think of either being used for is sex and...well..thats it. Unless you have sex alot in SL and want more space to do it theres really almost no reason to have it aside from looks, and those prims can be better put to use elsewhere.
