All the bickering reminds me of something I read online long ago.....

Fighting on the Internet is like winning a Gold Medal at the Special Olympics- Even when you "win" you're still a retard. :p

Wrong on so many levels and yet still funny :p

In my limited experience, those who go on about hating so-called 'drama' are those who thrive on it most.

Each time I've heard someone whine in-world about drama, it's been the person who appears to have nothing else in their life (RL or SL) They have no marketable talents or skills, they say that they just want fun, yet they're generally the worst gossip-mongers of all. (Yes people, a generalisation ;-p) It's getting harder and harder to go anywhere and not hear about this fabulous 'drama'. Those proclaiming to hate it and have no time for it, are also screw-loose enough to never stop talking about it. It's the only thing they have to talk about - a splash of colour in their otherwise dreary, repetitive, cyber-bonking lives.

This is why i steer a wide berth around those people whose profiles state anything about "drama" - it is always a warning - oh, i also avoid those people who threaten to beat you up if you mess with their BFF in their profiles..

Those people crack me up. :p It almost makes me WANT to mess with them just to see"the world of hurt" I will endure on the internet.

My profile has a PICK entry for my really good friend Stacy and part of the entry says this:

===
Wouldn't it be cool if i said some stuff about if you mess with her i would beat you up or something, right? No...but when i do read that stuff i laugh very hard.

Hahahahah

I've been lucky to have had a pretty drama-free SL. That doesn't mean I've avoided close attachments or even heartbreak. But I've been fortunate never to have been involved in the kind of Drama (with a capital D) that you often read about in these forums. I have known people who always seemed to have a miasma of drama swirling about them despite their claims not to enjoy it; you do have to start to wonder about those people after a while.

I have for the most part avoided forum drama too; mostly I do this by working very hard not to post while angry. When a post makes me angry and I bang out a response to it, I try to discipline myself to read the response over and decide whether having my say is worth the potential fallout from posting that particular response.

Nearly every time, that process leads me to revise my post to soften the tone, or even to not comment at all. Even so, I have made posts or sent PMs that I've later regretted, even that I've followed with apologies. But I'm happy (and once again, fortunate) that none of these, as far as I know, has led to the kind of ongoing drama or grudge-carrying that one sometimes sees in forums.

The upshot of the above rambling is this: in the world of SL associated internet forums, you often end up operating on incomplete information. Subtleties of tone are easily missed; people jump into discussions in the middle unaware of what has gone before; comments are made carelessly and intentions are misconstrued. For myself, to avoid posting in anger or inflaming the anger of others, it is crucially important (and also extremely difficult) not to fill in the blanks and jump to the worst possible conclusions when judging other people's comments under those circumstances.

And sometimes the best thing for me to do, when I want to avoid a fight (which I always do, I don't enjoy confrontation) is just to sit on my hands and keep my comments to myself, even if I feel very passionately that another person is in the wrong. I strive - and as I said, I don't always succeed - to remember that it's not necessary to have the last word in every debate, or to make sure that every stranger acknowledges my point of view. That's what has worked (for the most part) for me.

A friend of mine has something similar in her profile picks, I believe (re the BFF thing) From memory, she refers to them gutless jellyfish who can't stand up for themselves, and who feel they must swarm as it's the only show of strength they know: not a single one of them with the courage of their convictions :)

I've seen it in action and I've seen some nice people suffer because of the pack hunting tactics. Jeeze I love you women, but you fight dirty ;-)

Drama is another one of those wildly over used SL terms.

Using the word "audience" is rather a giveaway. That's exactly what you crave.
I don't "crave" it. It happens. Like it happened to Shakespeare.

The term "Drama" only exists for me in the forums.

My RL is totally devoid of such madness except the usual marriage back and forth mud-slinging.

Drama. Some avoid it like the plague. Some relish it. It may be a surprise to many of you but on some very rare occasions, we even see it in our beloved forums.

Conflict is just a part of life and pretty much difficult to avoid completely. Often times, it is the manner in which you approach and react to conflict that plays a major influence on its outcome. Technology has allowed us to somewhat separate our real life selves by affording a certain level of anonymity and distance when dealing with contentious issues on the internet. You can post anonymous comments with impunity, start flame wars or have a battle of the blogs. There are the trolls and griefers that do it for shits and giggles, while sometimes there is a genuine disconnect between very passionate viewpoints that can quickly degrade into ad hominem attacks. Stuff like this happens all the time for any number of reasons like boredom, language barriers, insecurity, or sheer miscommunication. Case in point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qg-heCy0CbQ

A person's behaviour often differs when having to deal with someone face to face in real life. Now how about Second Life? While we aren't at the stage where we can mimic subtle visual cues like body language, do you feel dealing with someone "avatar to avatar" in-world vs places like the forums, allows a more measured and thoughtful approach to conflict resolution in some instances. Do you feel your behaviour in the forums differs from your persona in-world? Could Second Life be the answer to world peace? :p

no.. I am pretty much the same in sl , rl and the forums.
although, I let things get to me more in sl than in rl or here on forums... strange huh?

good point

I used to think drama was a good thing, a good movie drama, or even Shakespeare....

when did drama become a bad thing?

When you have the starring role.

When people stopped developing the social skillset that allows them to deal with any behaviour different from their own. Anything they don't know how to deal with is immediately labelled in the negative.

I want the starring role in Romeo and Juliette, that is drama
and not a bad thing

the stuff that takes place on the net, I would not call it drama as much as.... stupid (and I am guilty of it myself)

now I try harder to avoid the stupidity heh

Uhhhhh . . . they both end up very very dead. Why would you want THAT role?
