Drama. Some avoid it like the plague. Some relish it. It may be a surprise to many of you but on some very rare occasions, we even see it in our beloved forums. Conflict is just a part of life and pretty much difficult to avoid completely. Often times, it is the manner in which you approach and react to conflict that plays a major influence on its outcome. Technology has allowed us to somewhat separate our real life selves by affording a certain level of anonymity and distance when dealing with contentious issues on the internet. You can post anonymous comments with impunity, start flame wars or have a battle of the blogs. There are the trolls and griefers that do it for shits and giggles, while sometimes there is a genuine disconnect between very passionate viewpoints that can quickly degrade into ad hominem attacks. Stuff like this happens all the time for any number of reasons like boredom, language barriers, insecurity, or sheer miscommunication. Case in point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qg-heCy0CbQA person's behaviour often differs when having to deal with someone face to face in real life. Now how about Second Life? While we aren't at the stage where we can mimic subtle visual cues like body language, do you feel dealing with someone "avatar to avatar" in-world vs places like the forums, allows a more measured and thoughtful approach to conflict resolution in some instances. Do you feel your behaviour in the forums differs from your persona in-world? Could Second Life be the answer to world peace?

I am not sure, but i think sometimes i come across that way. In World i am not confrontational when dealing with people except for strangers at clubs. I am fairly quiet. I run from conflict. I dunno. On the forums i am Super Bri...anywhere else i am just no one. I do not mean to sound abrasive or cold...i just deal with meds and some days i am aggressive in the forums and others not so much.

From: Rhonda Huntress I thought that was scarcasim. At least it made me laugh when I read it. I missed the sarcasm myself and feel as does Briana on this. To Joshooa - nope- this is me- exactly the same me you would meet in-world. In the physical world I tend not to discuss much of anything with anyone since to be honest I have absolutely no one I particularly feel like sharing my thoughts with and just find myself in disagreement over. So I just hush and let them continue on their merry way- hmm- maybe as Rio posted in Jig's thread, I too am here to hear myself talk

From: Joshooah Lovenkraft Do you feel your behaviour in the forums differs from your persona in-world? I can be more combative in forums than in worl. In world I am much more likely to just orbit, mute and ban than get in a pushing match. From: Joshooah Lovenkraft Could Second Life be the answer to world peace? No. There can be no peace as long as Jim Kirk lives.

Thanks for sharing that Briana. Yeah I think lots of people behave differently from the forums vs their in-world persona - knowingly or unknowingly. Often times, I find people are much nicer in-world than how they are perceived in places like the forums. You also have to opportunity to see how they interact with others in a casual setting and even subtle things like their manner of dress can be telling and influence your opinion of them. I can recall an instance where there was one person that I found a bit annoying in a regular hangout of mine when just using text but I found her quite interesting and fun to talk to on the rare occasion where I used voice with her, which resulted in a much better relationship overall. I'm glad there are places like the Forum Cartel Hangout, even though I rarely go there, where you can get a better feel for forum members.

No hope of world peace until each individual has peace in their hearts - but, potentially, there is some mileage in providing arbitration/mediation services within SL.

I am seen as outgoing, sometimes fiery and temperamental, and always hold strong opinions. Also by some as humorous, thoughtful and inquisitive. I'm the type who will start conversations in elevators. (That's an interesting psychological exercise, although I do not engage in it as such, just am naturally expressive and greet those I encounter.)

I read and post on the forum quite regularly and behave in my normal manner most of the time.In world I am a bit different.I was late to computers and although I am fine with them I have no keyboard skills. My sons call me banana fingers. So inworld I rarely socialise and when I do I tend to be a bit monosyllabic.

From: Ciera Spyker whats so funny about that? I think you just proved my point. have a nice day. I win. All you ever do is post when you have something rude to say like you did above. Why don't you try posting a helpful message or participating and being friendly instead of acting so negative. Each time i have mocked your appearance has been after you came in here and said some rude crap. And each time you take off afterward which says to me you can dish it out but cannot take it. You have a nice day as well Ciera, and maybe your next post should be a participatory post that furthers the conversation at hand instead of criticizing people. Better yet. Just keep your negativity on XstreetSL forums where you seem to like to go on a run.
