Nick P. The biggest hooker in SL history.

screwed thousands of people over and got paid hundreds of thousands US$ to do it.

Agreed.. I offer a product, and require payment for delivery, but I think demand is the wrong term... grab a dictionary....

demand: request urgently and forcefully;

I am not forcefully requesting... I am offering for sale, and requiring payment for delivery.

If somebody figured out a way to get a free item out of your store vendors, I'll bet you'd be "requesting payment urgently and forcefully" in short order. ;)

That's what I meant by "demand". You provide a product. You require (or "demand";) payment in return. I wasn't using it in a sense of "meet my demands or your sister feeds the fishes". :D

And Colette has an excellent point. The seller of a product is pretty much assured of payment, since payment has to be made before you deliver the goods. The service provider (e.g., a dancer or escort) has no such assurance, and often provides quite a lot of "service" before payment is ever given. A risky business.

You're entitled to your opinion, and nobody's "hating" on you. We're equally entitled to try and show you why your opinion is...er, "misguided" is perhaps the kindest word I can think of.

I know it's useless, but it's Friday after all, so I'll try one more angle on this.

anton, let's say you meet five people (in SL or RL, doesn't matter which).

1. A panhandler comes up to you and says, "Spare change, mister?"
2. A hooker standing on the streetcorner gives you a challenging stare and strikes a "come hither" pose. She says, "A hundred bucks for a half hour, sport. How about it?"
3. A street musician is playing a clarinet on the next corner. His hat rests on the sidewalk in front of him, to collect donations from passersby.
4. A man in a kiosk is selling T-shirts, five shirts for $10.
5. You meet a friend for lunch, a lawyer who is a partner in a major firm specializing in asbestos-related claims. He picks up the check and takes you back to your office in his new Mercedes.

Now, tell me...which of the above are beggars, and why? Which are scam artists, and why? And regardless of the answers to those questions, which of them do you consider beneath yourself on the social ladder...and why?

Sadly, SL is full of thieves and rip off artists just as we find in RL. Five months ago I paid someone 20K linden for some work she never performed and she is full of excuses about why she wont return the money.

Excuses such as she has to pay her tier, she is moving, she is sick, she is disabled, her husband is sick, she wont list her land to sell because it wont sell, etc. In the meantime she has a lot of land in SL and plenty of assets she could use to repay me if she wanted. She won't because she is just a rip off thief.

In early September she promised to pay me back at a rate of 2K per week. So far she has made 2 payments but only after I contact her to ask for the money. The sad part is that unless I post her name all over other forums and contact members of her groups inside SL to warn them about her theft she will continue to rip off other members.

Some people, like this woman, have no ethics and are just rip off dead beats.

It's comments like this that set people off:

and money grubbing whores can kiss my @$$ !!!

That and calling people beggars, etc. I don't think it's your opinion that is getting you the response you don't like, I think it's the way you state it. It's not very nice, and you can't reasonably complain when people respond like they have, which appears to me to be less aggressively than you did.

Plus, people can state their opinion as well. I don't expect you to change your mind because I said that people are selling a service and that service has a legitimate value to its purchasers, but that's my perspective as a non-stripper/escort/pimp/john. In RL I don't have a CPA, but I can see the value in the service they offer and if I had the need for a CPA, I wouldn't mind paying.

There - see? I'm not hating on you.

Actually Vic I wouldn't worry too much about karmic balance here. It's already in full swing.

Consider, if it were a 'job', the amount of time spent with you for 10 bucks... and the fact that not everyone can or will pay anything - that's a *very* sad, sorry, pathetic way to make income, yeah?

Secondly, to do such to people, it's inescapable that in the dark of the night the perpetrator *knows* what they are.

That's not too easy, and while it's possible to put on a good front one cannot lie so easily to oneself. Sooner or later "I am a loser" will echo loudly.

Personally, I feel sorry for such people. With such lack of hope and vision... what a pitiful state.

This may sound crazy, but I would recommend this: forgive and move on. My guess is that you were dealing with someone young, probably a male, clearly very disillusioned with life.

I've pulled aside a few people obviously trying to scam me, and talked to them. $L 500 or whatever is nothing to me. Try this: "I'll GIVE you some money, if we can discuss something sincerely for a minute. Why do this to yourself? It pays, but it's harder than succeeding through reputable means!"

They don't always listen. But attacking an anonymous reputation is pointless. Forgiveness and setting an example of a moral, ethical, good man is incredibly hard to ignore. Likely, you won't get 'satisfaction' right away.

I'd strongly recommend going out and doing something random and good for an anonymous stranger. Not for the anonymous stranger's sake, but for you. It will cure the bitterness and put everything in perspective.

Good luck.

I like you.

I can think of two reasons everyone is hating on you.

1) You are every bit as kewl as you think you are, and they is jus' jealous.

-or-

2) You are an Idiot.

"Cake or death?"

"Uh, cake please."

"Well, we're out of cake! We only had three bits and we didn't expect such a rush. So what do you want?"

"Well, so my choice is 'or death’? I’ll have the chicken then, please."

Speaking of chicken, and since this thread has sufficiently run it's course, I was goofing off in SL a couple nights ago and we ran across a sim dedicated to chicken worship.

It had a big chicken that gave recipes on notecards when you clicked it and a bunch of seats with egg poseballs to sit in that put you in sort of a rapturous position of worship in front of the giant chicken.

The first thing that popped into my head: "Some damn fool is paying TIER for this!!"

personally i look with great disdain on beggers in the game ie. dancers , escorts . but its just an example of how people are willing to sell their soul for money .

I know many dancers, escorts etc and generally they are some of the nicer people in SL. Most tend to be quite articulate and thoughtful actually.

If one looks at the money earned per hour most people offering a product or service in SL work for well below minimum wage. They could in actuality earn far more working in a RL fast food restaurant. Hence the reason they "work" in SL must be far removed from merely the money.

Your post suggests that either you have failed to comprehend the labor of love that most occupations in SL are, or that it is you (rather than the people you mock), that place having money above the more important things in life.

I concur with Desmond's suggestion. I personally love doing random acts of kindness by giving money and items to complete strangers in SL. It is amazing how a little kindness goes a long way. Giving unconditionally lightens the heart.

Oh and let me know who is collecting money for Desnond's new skin, I'll be happy to contribute :P

Some of the above was a little harsh but unfortunately SL can seem like a harsh place sometimes if you're new and optimistic and trusting. :o I can't really add to any of the truths stated so far but just want to encourage you to let it go as a lesson learned. You're better than her and that's it.

Personally I try to enter every situation assuming the other party is acting in good faith, but I don't hand anything over that I'd miss without first really establishing more of a relationship with the other. (And I paid L$7K for my skin! Never regretted it for a second.)

It's not about being harsh. It's about reality.

Some people can tell if you're gullible and naive enough to do as they ask and they'll take advantage of that. Just by the mere conversation you're having they can tell. The main thing is to not put yourself into that position in the first place.

This is reality whether it's harsh or not.
