Having things as no transfer is good because it means people wont be handing around sets that are incomplete (not containing all parts). If things are Transfer someone could sell the item to someone else at a higher price too.
Due to the nature of items/scripts sometimes a Copy is needed to revert back to original state. Having things without copy and transfer means more broken stuff out there, and higher quantity of support issues.
A vendor shouldn't have to replace an item because you bought it second hand and it doesn't work so good anymore, if you like the item ask them where they got it and get it from the person who put the effort in to create it.
If maybe the owner could allow resale, set the price acceptable for the next purchase price, and a percentage from the sale, that might allow more freedom to business. But then again so would permanent storage for scripts (not that the asset server can handle it, oh no I got side tracked D: but it is all so related.

From: Daisy Rimbaud The creator's hard work becomes an instant freebie. No, no, no, no, and no. Also no. See and this is what I don't want is a creator. I DO NOT want my hard work ending up in some freebie box, unless I put it there. That's another reason why I hesitate on transfers as a business person. As far as cleaning out your inventory, and changing your style (clothes for example), just delete the puppy. Not unless you are having a yard sale and want some money back for it, but to me that's just reselling for gain of profit. I also agree as a business person to stand behind what you sell. I've done the same thing to make sure the transaction did go through and if there was an issue upon receiving it, I'd gladly return a new object to the buyer as well. Only good business in my opinion!

Another good point.

There have been many times I've purchased things for others that come No Trans. Before I get those, I IM the creator and let them know I'm passing them out as gifts. I've never had an issue with someone telling me no. If they did, I'd go elsewhere to find what I needed. I also will make things transfer to others upon request no problem. But I don't think I will allow a possible free for all deal. I work too hard.

i only buy copy items because i lost some money on nocopy items that disapeared when trying to rez. i also try not to buy no mod stuff because many sellers are too lazy to finish their stuff and i am tired of wearing stuff that looks unfinished or stuff that doesnt fit my shape and i cant mod it...
so yes no trans is perfect for me as long as i can mod and copy

From: Roxanne Hynes In my opinion, after buying countless things from clothes to buildings, this is what I prefer:
Clothing: Mod / No Copy / Transfer The reason for this is that clothing might look nice on a picture or in a certain pose, covering up the seams or mistakes in the textures, but sometimes when you bought the piece of clothing and you wear it you start seeing the mistakes in it and eventually might want to sell it. Since clothing isn't really modifiable you can't make it better or different. Mod permission would be to change the way your clothing fits (tighter, looser, shorter, etc...) Transfer because you might not like it when you have bought it and you want to resell it, or you change your style completely over time and want to get rid of old clothing.
Attachments (jewelry, shoes, hair, ...): Mod / Copy / No Transfer When you give an object Mod/Copy rights then the buyer can always change the object to look like he wants, if it's too small, too bright, not shiny enough, different textures, .. then the buyer can change anything he wants and make it look good again so there is no need to transfer it.
Objects (furniture, buildings, ...): No Mod / No Copy / Transfer No Mod because most of time you will see in 3D what you will get and you can look at it and judge if it perfect for you or not. Perhaps for certain types of objects like buildings there could be a Mod version. No Copy because it wouldn't be fair to buy a chair and copy it 500 times and create something big with it for just the same price... Shops could sell their furniture in packs, making it cheaper when you buy more at once, this sounds very fair to me. Transfer.. well.. Because it's already No Mod / No Copy... at least you can give it away or resell it if you are tired of it. Great 1st post. I like your way of thinking on it. *I'm with her* PENGUIN!

If it's Transfer/ NO copy, you transfer only the existing item in your inventory. that means if I have a Transfer/NO copy dodad, and give it to my friend, I will no longer have the dodad, and my friend will have it. I can sell it or give it away, but I only have *one* to sell or give away.
If it's COPY/NO transfer, I cannot give it away to anyone.
If it's TRANSFER/COPY then the person can sell or give away as many copies as they like of your item, and the person they give it to can also sell/give away as many free copies as they like.
Use copy OR Transfer and your work will be limited to either one copy for many people to pass around, or many copies for one person. Use them both and you get freebies.
(edit) I currently sell Copy/noTransfer with a note that people can buy Transfer/NoCopy, but the grid is so unstable at the moment that I want to be able to replace items if they are lost or screwed up in some way and I just can't do that with transferable items. It seems to make better sense as a business to allow copyable items as much as possible until the grid starts behaving again.

Just to make sure I understand completely. COPY/No Trans means they cannot resell or give away at all. Not even give it to a friend and then simply lose it out of their inventory?

From: Siddean Munro Someone said something to me today about not wasting money on no-transfer stuff, and that got me thinking. Most of the items in my store are no mod, copy, no resell, but I've started to wonder how many people would prefer to buy items that are no mod, no copy, transfer, or mod, no copy, transfer? Frankly this whole permissions thing confuses the heck outta me and I could do with some input. With all the problems recently of no copy items disappearing from my inventory, I try to only buy copyable items. Very hesitant to buy no copy anything right now. Depending on the item, I think I might prefer copy, mod. On the other hand, this losing no copy items problem did get me to start making my own stuff.

Yes, the creators main goal is to simply screw who they can. Brilliant! Give me a break. How much sense does that really make, Arima? Repeat business or referral business is our main goal here as business owners. If we set out to purpously "screw" customers, how long do you think we'd last? Jeez! *eye-roll*

I buy lots of gifts, for my partner and friends, Lots of things!
Durning spur of the moment shopping trips. If I see somethng, I might say, "Oh, Lorna, would love this!" or "Lorna would look good in this!"
I like for the pruchases to be surprises, I do SLXchange sometimes. Bu I like stuff that is transferable. I do not buy much for me anymore.
If it is non-transferable, I 99% of the time move, I go searching for that item, with trans privs and buy that one.

For most things, I think I'd prefer copy/mod/no trans.
I like to tweak things that I buy, so I like to be able to modify. But if I'm going to modify, I'd like to have a backup copy in case I screw up.
All appearance-related items need copy permissions to effectively use with the outfit feature in appearance mode. (Unfortunately, I already had a formidable Second Life wardrobe before I came to appreciate the outfit feature, and that wardrobe has mostly no-copy clothes.)
I'm the kind of person who, even if I don't wear a particular piece of clothing anymore, I want to save it in case I change my mind. On the other hand, I'm not terribly frugal with Lindens, so I don't have a need to sell off old clothes to raise money to by new.
The items on which I might like transfer permission are things that are more expensive that I may decide I don't want anymore in the future, and I'd like a chance to recoup some of the investment. I buy very few of those though.
For most things under $1000L, I buy with the idea that I'm spending money that I don't mind losing. So, in those cases, the ability to transfer isn't a huge deal to me.
Of course, the one area in which the ability to transfer is a big dea is the area of gifts. Giving a gift requires the ability to transfer, obviously.
There are a few items, like hug-type HUDs, for which I'd like transfer ability to resell. I'm never going to use two identical HUDs at once. The only modification to do on those might be to add/remove animations, but that's not the type of modification which would cause me concern about "breaking" the HUD (and it's easy enough to back up the menu notecards, for example).
I'm still surprised that more merchants don't offer items with different sets of permissions. Why not let the customer chose whether they want the copy/no trans version or the no copy/trans version?

For me I prefer clothes to be Mod/no copy/transfer
I don't want multiple copies of something in my inventory. It drives me nuts.
If i want to make the skirt smaller because the designer has decided to give me a big bubble butt, I should be able to fix that. I usually don't care about recoloring things.
After awhile I get sick of my clothes and I do want to resell them. So more than likely if the clothes aren't transferrable, I won't buy it because I can probably go elsewhere and find something similar that IS transferrable. There are a lot of clothes I pass up because of this. I agree with another poster who said that there are a lot of clothes with defects that you can't see until you buy them and put them on. Again I want to be able to get rid of such items.
Houses always need to be mod/copy/no transfer. Any home builder who doesn't package their homes like this... well they are nuts! lol

Keep in mind is that creators have no way of protecting their items other than choosing either of the "no copy/trans" set or the "copy/no trans" set. Any item that is both "copy" and "trans" becomes, for all practical purposes, a freebie.

I'd love! to get rid of a lot of things, I've dropped about as much as I can on new residents needing things, so Transfer is great! But if I have to choose, I need me Copy! as a fresh backup of everything. *mumbles esp these days* ...

Any item that is both "copy" and "trans" becomes, for all practical purposes, a freebie. There are so many valid points from both sides, but what Amity just posted is the main reason I think most builders don't allow a free for all on freebies or resell. As a builder I know I work "very" hard on detail which makes up for a lot of time spent in building. I care about the end result very much and pleasing the customer. And because I work so hard and care so much for each build, I tend to want to safeguard my effort from ending up as a freebie. Business people do care about the profit or loss. So it's not a slam in anyone's face by not placing a No Trans, just a protection to the creator. By the same token, I will allow trans for those who request it. In fact because of this thread, I just added that notice on my website. But it has to come in an IM, because I won't just risk my hard earn work ending up as a freebie. Again, I wish Lindens would implement something to the effect that we can put more specific permissions on this for our customers variety wants. Wonder if a simple poll will work here in the thread for business owners to reach out to LL and request this! LOL Yup...we won't get heard!

Though I like the idea of being able to get a refund or replace a lost copy because of copy/no-transfer, it's not something I use often - maybe 2-3 times out of the bazillion things I've bought.
I would rather have no-copy/transfer and be able to get rid of things that looked nice on the sign but not on me or things that I just don't use any more. Probably not what shop owners want to hear but from a consumers point of view, this would be my preference.

From: Amity Slade I'm still surprised that more merchants don't offer items with different sets of permissions. Why not let the customer chose whether they want the copy/no trans version or the no copy/trans version?
Prim counts, upload fees for a second sales texture, and buyer confusion. If someone picks up the wrong set of permissions, you can fix it for transfer (by requesting that the item be exchanged back to the creator for the other version) but you can't really "fix" it if they pick up copy and later want a transfer. Even trying to explain it here is complicated, try explaining it to an already upset customer who wants you to make it right, NOW, no matter if it was their own fault for buying the wrong item. Or to a customer who simply doesn't understand permissions enough to understand your argument. the world screams that the customer is always right- but somethings they just *aren't*. In real life everything is no-copy/transfer, so you can !always! take it back and demand a refund. In many cases I'd say that transfer is the better option- but frankly the grid isn't stable enough for me to be able to say to my customers with a straight face that I cannot and will not replace any items lost to the asset server malfunctioning. There are no asset server malfunctions in real life. You go to the store, buy your item and come home with it and there's no possible way for it to simply disappear without cause. The real life "grid" is utterly stable! Here in SL though, my customers can lose their items through no fault of their own if I shut off copy permissions... and there's no way to verify that it was actually lost and that they're not just scamming me to turn my item over and make a profit. So, everything is copy/no transfer for simplicity and to limit my upload fees and prim counts... and people can im me for different permissions. =/ It's not the ideal solution, but it's the best of a bad lot.

What's up with the polls with too few choices?
I don't care about trans as much as copy/mod! I'm big into personalizing my stuff either with new textures, colors or sizes!

I think things should almost always be modifiable. Especially houses. I've had 2 so far that I like, but didn't like the inside textures, or it didn't look good with the furniture and decor I ended up buying. I like being able to add carpet or hardwood, wallpaper, etc. Also, prefabs should always be copy. I've already deleted my current house twice, while thinking I had clicked on another item to delete. And suddenly I'm standing in mid-air and my house is gone...causing me to look around saying WTF?? It's nice to have the ability to just rez a new one out of inventory and place it so that everything lines back up. I rent a small shop with resell items that I've cleaned out of my inventory, along with some of my own designs. Because of the current inventory loss bug, I sell everything original as copy/no trans, but have a sign posted saying that perms can be changed to no copy/transfer upon request. I spend a lot...and I mean A LOT...of lindens shopping. My inventory gets too clogged up or I end up with older outfits I never wear because I have new ones I like much better. I like being able to give or resell those items so that someone else can benefit from them. And I resell them very cheaply, when I don't just give them away (um...a Simone gown for 50L..cheap enough?). Makes more sense than just deleting them from inventory. Besides...I love yardsales in RL....like them just as much in SL
