From: Miko Masukami " Then it dawned on me that this was the same girl I had seen in front of that same outfit vendor when I arrived, and that she obviously just didn't have enough for that out one outfit she really wanted. "
Well I came across a girl in a hair shop like that that needed just 50L for a hair she wanted...Later in the evening, I returned and she was still there and I guess she forgot me cause she asked for 50 L for that hair she really wanted... I will go out of my way for a newb but beggers I give them 1 L , it pisses them off and I can tell Newbs from alts quite easy... If you are gonna beg, at least remember who you already asked. LOL.

The thing that got me was the amount she asked for... i mean 62 when everything is 100. She thanked my up&down and then Tp'ed out promptly after she purchased so I'm pretty sure it wasn't someone running a game like that.

I've had this happen many times whilst shopping and it annoys the hell out of me. I'm usually polite and tell them there is a little $L button at the top of the screen that you can press to get money. If the person seems to be harrassing everyone in the store, I am a little meaner and will tell them sorry, but I only have 30K (even if I'm broke).
On occasions I have reported beggars to store owners when the begging has verged on harrassment of customers. I do suspect that quite a number of the people who have asked me for money were underage, based on their behaviour as well as their apparent inability to spend a couple of dollars to purchase lindens. I remember one extremely immature girl harrassing then verbally abusing everyone in a store that sells DOLLS to try to get money for a high priced item, then watched her TP in everyone on her friend's list and some random people as well to harrass them for money too because she "needed a baby". More likely the behaviour of a child than a grown adult.
I've NEVER given money to campers but I did used to take newbies shopping with my friends to get them started out. That was fun but the SL population has changed quite a bit since then and my more recent experiences trying to help newbies have not been as positive, so I've given up on that. I think there is an increasing number of new SLers who treat other players like NPCs and have the attitude that everything should be provided for free.
Before you think I am a complete noob-hating bitch, I do often randomly pass skins and AOs I've made to new players I see whilst shopping to help them get started out. But money, never.

From: Chris Norse Your justification in not sharing the fruits of your labors shows how anti-social you really are. Maybe you should just log off if you don't want to share what is yours with people who do not want to pay for Lindens. Hey wait, does that mean you are generous to a fault? I have been running around looking for some new land to park my butt on. I am pretty sure I have enough money to buy that 4Km of land I want, but an extra L$30K from you would be great then I could go furniture shopping again. /me smiles at him

This ugly, deformed "female" comes up and asks...
02-20-2008 22:02
Out snoopin' around and this horribly strange looking female comes up and says she'd really like to buy a pair of shoes and could I give her $100L. I thought a moment and then replied: "I'd really like to help you out...but my unemployment lindens check hasn't arrived in the mail yet." She said ok and shuffled off.....first time that's happened...but perhaps it's a new trend in pandhandling...(sighs and keeps watching for the mailman).

I"ve recently had some people ask me for money. I just didn't answer them and they walked off without saying anything else.

I never begged for money but still got a lot of gifts from random strangers when I was a noob (no dates or other favors involved). Even my avatar was a gift, worth 1200. No, I don't give money to anyone who is begging because this is rude but I do give occasional gifts to noobs. One got a full furry avatar from me, just like I did when I was a noob. It's great to make someone happy.

---> When a random someone asks for money.... <--- Just say 'No'. I have a collection of freebies that I've assembled over the years that contain enough tools and goodies to set them up nicely for their entire SL life which I give out to new residents. Like Monalisa, I was the fortunate recipient of random gifts when I joined and to this day perpetrate 'random acts of generosity'. However it's not something I do on request.

I have been only asked for money once and I was a day old. I just said no. I have been given things personally but I don't expect it and I rarely ask for things either.

I just ignore them when it's a random I.M or when they are standing right next to me I apologize and explain that I don't have any money to give them. It works... sometimes

I usually say no. Unless it is a friend, in which case I will usually be willing to help them out. If they don't take no for an answer I usually start lecturing them on how to make themselves money in SL. Can be fun seeing them turn and run away before I have even finished my first line lol.

Ignore them as you would do in rl. Or you can teach them a lesson and practice your weapons. Best time as any.

As otherspoint out, if you can afford a computer you can afford a few USD as play money once in a while.

From: Pocket Pfeffer I was only just thinking about this very topic yesterday, I created an alt and went about 'dressing' myself...all freebie items. I didn't turn out half bad..... There are many many stores offering free items, vouchers etc to newbies... so if newbies are informed of this when they ask for money, they'll realise that you don't actually need L$ to 'kit yourself out'. I recently had that experience myself (although eventually said the hell with it and treated my alt to a really nice neko skin LOL). But it prompted me to create a notecard for my new resident kit called The Quick & Dirty Avatar (which I hope to expand on some day), and for about L20, a new resident/alt can get fully kitted out and quite nicely at that. As for "stuff", there are enough freebie shops to choke a horse in SL. And if someone really wants something that costs more than a few Lindens, there is the option of buying Lindens or making and selling items or hiring oneself out in some capacity. While I've never given money to those who ask (and I've never been asked nicely), I will randomly give money to some newbies when feeling moved to do so.

From: Sunni Jewell how do you handle it? When someone asks me for money, I just tell them that there are Money Tree's that give out free money to new residents, and they should stop by one or several. Both the Shelter and NCI have money trees, and I believe NCI offers a notecard that shows the landmarks of all the known Money Trees throughout SL. This is probably the quickest & easiest way to get them off your back
