From: Sunni Jewell It just really surprised me that they have the nerve to ask. I, personally, don't even ask my partner for lindens, and he's my RL husband. I also then I wonder if they sent IM's to everyone in the shop and I'm the only sucker that gave them any money....lol.
Then I thought maybe they figure I have lindens because I'm a store owner. They may not know this, but some months I don't even break even much less turn a profit.
Anyway, I think I've pretty much reached my level of tolerance on this, really. Next person that asks won't get a response. If they ask again, the response won't be pretty...lol. Now, if they have a new rez date, I can point out freebies, buying lindens, etc. I'll assume for the sake of peace that they actually are a noob and not an alt.
I just wondered what the general consensus was on this. I tend to give out Lucrezia's folders to newbies that really are looking for help. I'd take Isabeau's approach, though. "No." Or, if I'm feeling generous, "Sorry, no." lol

From: Broccoli Curry I simply point them to the "L$" button top right of screen and how easy it is to purchase some 'play money' Dat's about what I do, too. Not the answer many want, but it's the one I happen to have. Mari

I usually grill them a bit on why they want it, if they've tried to earn money in other ways, if they know just how many L$ than can get for each US$ and stuff flike that. If they ask for a 'loan' I'll want to hear details on the loan, too.
If they can survive 10 minutes of this, I'll usually give them some L$.

As many others have already said....and quite rightly too... There are absolutely tons of places that offer free items. When I first joined SL, I hadn't a clue what I was doing, but I was clued in enough to know that the first two items I was going to get were a decent skin and prim hair. I had no skills as such so I camped till both my SL and my RL bum were sore...lol Camping wasn't really that enjoyable so I went to as many classes as I could possibly attend and learned everything I could. So now I make and sell my own items. It's taken about 10 months for things to settle and whilst I certainly don't make a fortune or anything even remotely similar, I have enough to indulge myself every now and then...in SL of course..lol I was only just thinking about this very topic yesterday, I created an alt and went about 'dressing' myself...all freebie items. I didn't turn out half bad..... There are many many stores offering free items, vouchers etc to newbies... so if newbies are informed of this when they ask for money, they'll realise that you don't actually need L$ to 'kit yourself out'. Probably, the only thing you actually need L$ for would be land, rent, or the occasional trip to the strip club... Personally though, I don't think I'd have the nerve to go up to a complete stranger and just ask for L$...and if anyone came up to me and asked me.....I'd just hand them a notecard with a list of freebie places and stores offering vouchers etc..

I did my alt in mostly freebie items, too, and items that Sunni made and gave her. She got the newbie voucher from Gurl 6, which is what first turned me on to Gurl 6 hair. When I first created Sunni (almost a year ago now, or will be in 2 days...lol), I didn't really know about all the freebie places. My husband had already been playing for a few months, so I knew about skins, etc, and wanted to shed my newbie look pretty quickly. I bought $20 worth of lindens, and that was more then enough to get me well started and on my way. I discovered L25 Diva, and that's where all my early clothes came from. I still wear some of those things pretty often, even though I now own tons of other stuff. Believe me, the last thought to enter my mind was walking around the grid and asking for money.

3 months old?...7 months old??...NO..almost all my charitable handouts have not been asked for and are spontaneous. I met a nice Japanese man once who made outstanding super heroes costumes..he was charging like 50 L for them..he told me it wouldn't do the super hero creators honor for him to make money off their idea. I immidiately gave him a large amount and told him it was an investment in his good attitude. Back in the day when campers were in fact campers and not bots...I would occasionally drop a weeks worth of camping on them and I always got a reply thanking me. When campers stopped thanking me and I suspected that the majority of campers were bots..I stopped paying campers. I have had a few friends that i gave money to..never solicited..until the second time..when they did solicit it..I would give that one more time for good measure and wait to see how they treated that..wether as a gift..or a loan..99.9% of the time they treated that second amount they asked for as a gift as well and I stopped giving to them. Funny that after the asking once and not paying me back i think they knew they'd not get anymore from me cause they never asked again. I'm not going to go into the old days when we had to walk to school up hill..barefoot..in the snow..both ways. But there were not always money trees..there was not always camping. and for basic memberships no stipend. I still got by.((not having L$ sortve forces you to play the game as a creator..not a consumer )) I don't remeber once ever asking someone for cash here but..it has been given(twice) and i've been afforded the generosity of many people thru SL..in different ways. So if i can still find the random noob or new friend who has been here for three months and still has a noob cock or bad skin..I'll still be generous. ~Lana Tomba

Actually, most of the time I snark at people just asking for money. Yes, snark, because it is actually darn easy to make L$ 100 here - if one wants to invest a little time. (Of course, it is also much easier to bugger a hundred people and maybe get a "loan" from three or four of them.)
Sorry, no way. To me, running around and asking people for money that they either earned or paid for themselves is just plain rude. Almost as rude as a thing that has happened to me quite a few times, actually - someone running up to me and asking "Oi! How many Lindens do YOU have?". Fun thing is, when I tell them that sort of information is not something I blabber around at everyone who asks, THEY get huffed and tell me I am mean for not telling them what I have in my wallet, lol.

This has never happened to me (probably fluke; next log-in i'll be bombarded with noobs asking for handouts I'm sure). But, if it were to happen I'd think they were bloody rude!
I don't care if they're new, you wouldn't do it in RL so don't do it in SL.
I have helped out new people before, if they seem like a nice person i'll give them some cash to get started, but I can't be doing with beggars.

Wow. That is EXTREMELY rude. I've never had anyone ask me that, yet. I'd probably react pretty badly if they did, tbh.

BeggarBots!?
02-20-2008 15:23
I would like to be charitable, but I am not so trusting in SL. We have LandBots, CampBots, TrafficBots. Why not a BeggarBot that simply identifies AV's and IM's them begging for money? With a little bit of AI installed, they could seem very much alive and persuading.
It could be a profitable income.

I'll help any friend who needs it or even a newbie on occasion, but I don't even reply to random people who ask. I think that is incredibly rude to ask a stranger for lindens.

Whenever I'm asked for L$ (which has been a few times), I'll drop something I've made on them set to transfer. I tell them that while I don't have any L$ on hand, if they can find a buyer for the item I've tossed their way, they can keep the L$.
The way I figure it, it is free advertising for me. And I like giving out my creations, I'd do it even if not asked.
Oh, and they get the contents of my Newbie Folder.

When asked for food, if you give a man a fish you feed him for a day. Hand him a fully charged electric eel and he likely won't ask you for anything ever again.

In RL I wont hesitate to buy someone a sandwich. They are frequently outside the convenience store and I'll bring them something out. This is SL though. No one is going to go cold or hungry here. I just tell them no and refuse to say anything else or discuss it further. If they choose to persist I'll mute them without hesitation. I'm here to have fun.
What's funny is when a noob offers to sell me something. It always seems to be a car. I can go to Freebie Dungeon on my own, Thank you.

I don't know the actual justification for having to give beggars money though?
What do they need a hot meal?
A room at a cheap hotel?
Didn't some people just get done berating others for being anti-noob look?
And of course so many actual once premium items are now freebies you could pretty much look like someone who spent 5000L on their AV in 2006 without spending hardly anything but time.

I also do this with campers... except I usually ask in IM if they are really camping or if they are bots... if they answer they get some cash. I've had people ask for money and I rarely give them some.. only when they offer a plausible explanation. I remember my noob days when I did not know about SLX and had to deal with LL limits and problems they had with paypal... it took me a week to get money into the game. All the free stuf for men that I found back then was terrible... .d

usually depends on the AV, sometimes i give them 1L and watch them crack the shits
another good one is to offer them 50L to randomise the shape, this is especially good on noobs who don't know how to get there old shape back
usually i use mystitools and just crush them tho if there super annoying.
yes i am a bastard but i only do it to people that beg, i hate it. on the other hand i do like helping out noobs when i have the time, usually take them to kuula and give them a few other nice landmarks and often a couple 100 Lindens.

Hasn't happened that much to me, but it has happened. I usually just meet those requests with silence, except for the last one. Was shopping at the 100L thing at Last Call and a not-so-noob girl asked me for like 62L. Initially it was a wtf reaction and I took my time about it. Then it dawned on me that this was the same girl I had seen in front of that same outfit vendor when I arrived, and that she obviously just didn't have enough for that out one outfit she really wanted. So I bought it for her, and gave her the 62L so she could buy another one as well. I don't mind the occasional honest request from honest people, it's the ones I think make a living out of begging that get nothing.

Well I came across a girl in a hair shop like that that needed just 50L for a hair she wanted...Later in the evening, I returned and she was still there and I guess she forgot me cause she asked for 50 L for that hair she really wanted... I will go out of my way for a newb but beggers I give them 1 L , it pisses them off and I can tell Newbs from alts quite easy...
