From: Broccoli Curry What always makes me chuckle is some of the loudest complainers when there's downtime are those who contribute little to nothing (except perhaps a bit of lag) to the overall SL experience, and many are on free basic accounts paying nothing ... so why complain about not having access to something you don't pay for in the first place? Just because someone doesn't own land via the Lindens or have a premium account, doesn't mean they aren't paying for many things in SL. Rental land, rental properties, purchasing goods, services, items from designers. There are a great many "freebie accounts" spending just as much money as anyone else and contributing to other's tier payments. So when you make over generalized comments like this, you are way off base.

Well - personally, I have taken the time to do some much needed PC maintenance (Spyware/Adware scans, full virus scan, full defrag, uninstall obsolete stuff etc.) I don't hold LL responsible for every minute that I'm not in SL. By and large, I hold RL responsible for that. And I try to remember, that they are trying to manage an immense resource with finite facilties. After 4 years in development, H4 and Windlight make the main viewer - and LL suffer from 3rd party complaints. I have to ask - what do some of you people want. This is NOT a real world (and yes - I know the arguments - I have several SL businesses too), but at the end of the day - it's IRC on speed. While the grid is down, rediscover RL. Go and meet some people in the flesh. Take a walk in the park. Damn - try phoning someone. It will be back when it's back, and you can return to your artificial reality (and I'll be there too), but please don't make suggestions to bypass what you make sound like the end of the world. It's a respite from break

Seems obvious.. stability. Maybe had you said 4 months of development I'd expect this kind of service and wouldn't be wondering why people actually support this. I guess some people bave outrageous expectations... like more than 50% uptime.

So... I'm curious. Why are so few people bringing up the fact that LL isn't giving anyone refunds for extended periods of downtime and chronic problems? Why aren't more people upset that they're paying LL for a minimum level of service and instead they're receiving 12-hour downtimes and asset servers that seem to fail more than 10% of the time? And... Why are so many people excusing this low level of service because 3rd parties are involved? Messages like this: From: someone If, as it appears, the problem is external to Second Life, then surely we can't blame Linden Lab totally for the problem? Makes me cringe. The fact of the matter is we pay LL (Even basic accounts pay by way of rent, etc..) to provide a reasonable level of service. Third Party providers are chosen by LL, contracted by LL, and ultimately their failure is NOT an excuse for service disruption. If a single 3rd party can cause 12 hours of downtime, LL should have redundant systems in place. To those that have made comments about using this downtime as a reason to rejoin RL for a bit of time, well ... That's a pointless comment to make. This shouldn't be about peoples RL/SL social habits, it should be looked at from a business point of view. We pay for 24/7 access to a product and we're not getting that. Even when the grid is available, we're still not getting the services that we were sold. By way of asset server failures, transaction failures, etc... We're getting ripped off. As a real world example, I own a web hosting company. For each of my servers, I pay a set amount per month. If any one of my servers is down due to my providers failure, I receive huge refunds back -- which I in turn use to refund clients and/or use to move effected clients to new servers. If one of my servers was ever down for 12 hours -- My clients receive refunds and credits no matter which one of my 3rd party providers are responsible for failure. Because my clients EXPECT what they pay for (hah -- who wouldn't) -- I make sure my 3rd party providers are reliable. I make the effort to make sure redundant systems are in place if any one of them fail. And ultimately I provide my customers with a level of service that has experienced less than 2 hours of downtime in the last 12 months. So? How should everyone react? Those with paid accounts should be filling complaint after complaint to LL. Those with basic accounts that rent land should be complaining to their land owners. Land owners should be fighting hard for their renters. The attitude here shouldn't revolve around the fact that this is a game, but rather around the fact that this is a business and as such it should provide the service we've paid for. Nobody should ever say, "if you don't like it leave" -- they should be saying, "I've paid for it now gimme what I paid for!" </end rant>

From: Whispering Hush mmm, there's lots of stuff worse than stuff breaking and people being disadvantaged.
For gods sake, this is a the best online simulation on the planet bar none. Yes it's got faults, yes it has current scaling problems, yes the viewer is currently crashing on me every 30 minutes or so.
But to be fair, the lindens have always been there improving the experience. They'll win on this outage too, and they'll get stuff right again. At the same time they'll deal with all the inworld issues as best they can. I mean our petty little squabbles and childlike activities like crashing sims and slowing regions and spamming etc etc.
They never stop working.
I'm going premium again.
These people are working on a weekend so i can have fun. I like that work ethic, I want to encourage it. Either that or they shut down the grid and went to Vegas for the weekend only to tend to it on Monday..hehe...

From: Ray Musketeer I feel as a community we need to respond to the constant interuptions, a Boston tea party of sorts. We get no refunds, nothing for our troubles but the continued message all clear, fixed, sign the new TOS, and pay your dues or leave. *sighs and rolls his eyes* It's moot. When you, or anyone else, agreed to the Terms of Service to participate within Second Life you agreed to Section 1.6: From: Terms of Service 1.6 Second Life is subject to scheduled and unscheduled service interruptions. All aspects of the Service are subject to change or elimination at Linden Lab's sole discretion. Linden Lab reserves the right to interrupt the Service with or without prior notice for any reason or no reason. You agree that Linden Lab will not be liable for any interruption of the Service, delay or failure to perform, and you understand that except as otherwise specifically provided in Linden Lab's billing policies posted at http://secondlife.com/corporate/billing.php, you shall not be entitled to any refunds of fees for interruption of service or failure to perform. Linden Lab has the right at any time for any reason or no reason to change and/or eliminate any aspect(s) of the Service as it sees fit in its sole discretion. You can't get a refund for service interruptions as you agreed that you're not entitled to one.

From: Ray Musketeer ...asset servers problems as mentioned have been going on quite a whle not because of a storm . There is a beta test grid. Ostensibly to test for new upgrades with volunteers to elicit and discover issues before the main grid is subjected to the updates.... They do use the beta grid. It doesn't always find all the problems. The main grid is a much harsher environment for software, with many more users, many more different hardware and software combinations, etc.
