If, as it appears, the problem is external to Second Life, then surely we can't blame Linden Lab totally for the problem?
If someone from the water company is outside digging a hole in the road with a JCB that swings round and pulls down your telephone cable, you don't blame the telephone company for your loss of service, do you? You blame the idiot in the JCB for doing it, and whilst perhaps the fact that nobody can get round to replace your cable until tomorrow, frustrating as it may be, isn't necessarily their fault either.
I think it's odd that the 18k or so that are logged in are allowed to do so, however... if there are problems affecting the grid (otherwise there wouldn't be a lockout) surely they are affected by it as well?

We can blame them when they choose a sub-par company for providing the most essential tool to enable secondlife.

From: Ray Musketeer Friday night, hmm would say that's paticullarly problematic, except that we have had nothing but problems for near a month. A year ago, we were alerted to being hacked, but the asset servers that had our financial records were secure though we had to change our passwords. For those who been around awhile, griefers trying to bring down SL were widely known and I have no reason to believe they just quit. So yeah, could be the down-grade oops up-grade, or could we be hacked?
Now the asset servers are on the fritz on a semi-consistent rate. I feel as a community we need to respond to the constant interuptions, a Boston tea party of sorts. We get no refunds, nothing for our troubles but the continued message all clear, fixed, sign the new TOS, and pay your dues or leave.
As a content provider this is a slap in the face. We have much invested in sl and the take it or leave it is not acceptable IMO. I won't pretend to know what the problem is but sure feels like we are lab rats and someone or group wants to see how we re-act.
Maybe if thousands of AR are submitted on the Lindens themselves might be one way to send a message to get their act together (it sure feels like abuse to me). I am sure there are other idea's to send a message either way to acquiesce by doing nothing is weak and guarantee's being treated as such, IMO. I agree. We pay good money but the level of customer service is appalling.

I only really see a couple of problem with the external routing. The first one I think has been brought up a few times already, but I'm a lazy schmuck and refuse to read all those replies ^_^. Its Friday night, aka the weekend. Some people go out with friends, us geeks sit down with a beer and ice cream and play second life. So that my first issue, having a major downage like this on a weekend weather is in their control or not sucks big round ones. My second issue is that linden labs doesn't have a control with a better service provider. I mean I live near the bay area and there is some serious internet stuffs going on here, there are plenty of other company's in the area that don't have issues like this. Its poor judgment, management and foresight in my opinion.
However, what am I going to do right? Prolly scratch my butt for a little bit and stick in a movie or something like everyone else. Oh well maybe linden labs will learn, maybe not. Hindsight is twenty twenty after all.

From: Rhaorth Antonelli being that no one forces me to play, no one forces me to pay to play, and no one is forcing me to stay, I really do not think I have much to complain about
I choose to pay tier, I choose to come here and create things and try to sell them, and I choose to purchase things made by others, and I am fully aware of the issues at hand, the down times, the all clear and moments later the oops we have another booboo
I am not complaining because I know what I am choosing to do and no one is forcing me to choose to do it (I could just walk away if I so choose) or I can choose to sell my land, drop my tier and just make a sell stuff and not worry about it.
even those who use SL to make a RL income are choosing to do so, in full knowledge of the issues at hand (not like SL can hide that there are issues, we all experience it)
I am not debating... just putting forth my 2cents just as you did (so please do not try to debate me on this or convince me otherwise)
so to answer the topic... closed for maintenance I am not in for a major protest /me claps. exactly Gosh you know today peek there was 60,000+ people signed on and that number keeps growing everyday! Things happen... gosh. And FTR I'm online now... I was here when it went down and didn't sign off.. but it sure is lonely

From: June Oh Well SL in the main runs well for me these days so no complaints from me, I get hours of pleasure out of SL and costs me little, I guess one could get by at no cost. What I not like about todays breakdown is the Blog is not giving updates on progress as to when SL might be back. It is like at a UK airport they fail to keep one informed on when your delayed flight will actually be taking off. I'm off for a cup of tea, it does help. Love June maybe there are no updates because they, like us, are waiting to see what the up to date info is... it seems to me that the problem is not with SL, but with whomever they are using as for customer service, I have no problems with their customer service. sometimes it might be a bit slow, but they do come through in the end (slow is understandable in some situations), for example I requested to acquire a plot of land that was owned by gov linden (reclaimed land) and lo and behold they set it for sale to me, so I was able to purchase it and complete my land area to my joy!! I had issues today with the rotations on my items stopping and a linden came over to look (nothing he could do at the time as they were at that point unaware of it hehe) but he did come to see, he did not just shrug me off with a ty for the info I will pass it along. I am a premium, but not concierge level of customer and I have no complaints about the customer support I have received (even when it is something really dumb that I contact them about hehe) I feel bad for the lindens that deal with the flood of complaints....

Am I the only one who thinks "Gee! The grid is down. Time to work on RL for now".
I think of SL Downtime as RL UpTime.
To rely on SL being UP 24/7 is pretty damn sad.
Name another online community with user created content that exists 24/7.
They all have hiccups & downtime.

They all have hiccups & downtime. I did the RL hehe played with the kids, pushed them on the swings, shot some hoops, played bank shot (he beat me bad) and watched star wars with them. tucked them into bed with a hug good night and then came here to catch up on some SL stuff and lo and behold it was down LOL am I bitching.... nope.... doesn't do any good to bitch and complain, all that will do is give me a headache, make those listening (reading) want to avoid or mute/ignore me and could even cause folks to dislike me cuz I am bitching about something out of my control... I just check through the forums, wait for hubby to come home from his night out with friends and cuddle up and spend time with him SL can wait (I do spend a LOT of time in SL, but for me, RL always comes first)

H4 Fail

Hiho i have been a havok4 early adopter for a month, and theres a kind of realy big bug. after a few days of continuious running srcipts start to fail. first to go are targetomega (rotations) next to die are networking listeners. the ones used in most venders. others go to but i discovered that a sim reboot sets em all going again fine... will fine for a few days, then it's reboot time again. i tryed to bring this up at the H4 office hours, but there only held in a non linden owned mature private sim. realy dont like the idea of trying to to debuggung buisness in a porn sim. so gave up. well i figured they fixed this bug befor the full H4 rollout, but today i was seeing the signs all over the mainland, that being all target omega rotations were stopping. and heard from friends that there venders were all failing, aswell as anything else with listeners and networking. then while flying around i was wondering if LL would do a rolling restart on the whole grid and how embarasing that would be. well sims everywhere started going down with no notice and staying down. the sim to the north of me was down 30 minuts with out showing as down on the map. it even showed avatars there! figured ok, LL will try a sneek rolling restart but something was going horrably wrong, the sims werent comming back. then the accet server just died. i strongly suspect the grid wont be back to soon. think there struggeling to fix H4. and at pasts rates of fixes it may be months

From: Tod69 Talamasca Am I the only one who thinks "Gee! The grid is down. Time to work on RL for now". I think that's part of the problem - we have two distinct user communities in SL. The first are the content creators who build stuff to sell, so any 'downtime' is potentially money lost, or development time lost. When you factor real money (and remember some people make hundreds, thousands of dollars a month out of this place) then yes, it's frustrating. For those whose sole income is based on SL, even more so. The second are the users, who come here to socialise and have fun. For them, downtime is frustrating, but they aren't losing anything really because there are other ways to communicate with your real friends - messengers, skype etc - if they are really that good a friend. Failing that, fire up the xbox or wii or whatever and play some other game, or go down the bar or watch tv or whatever. What always makes me chuckle is some of the loudest complainers when there's downtime are those who contribute little to nothing (except perhaps a bit of lag) to the overall SL experience, and many are on free basic accounts paying nothing ... so why complain about not having access to something you don't pay for in the first place? Oh, and it's been about 2 hours now since the shutdown message... "we'll keep you posted" clearly means something different at LL than it does in the rest of the world. An update would be nice even if it's just "we're still working on it", to know that Teeple hasn't just fallen asleep at the keyboard and forgotten to hit the "Enable Logins" button on the BMTRE console.

Ok had the cuppa. Still down think I will go shopping, that helps a girl when she's down. Ok you guys in America, do these sub-contract people of Lindens in these sorts of industries work 24/7? Lindens I see work all hours and days to fix problems they can control and tell us progress, so what happens at this sub-contract firm, are we stuck untill they come into work 9am Monday? Love June

It's that we were already online when LL disabled logins... they didn't boot us out, just nobody new got in. Very few things were working in there, half your stuff never rezzed, TP's and media borked, Can't build, rez, buy, transfer, edit... only IM's seemed to be working ok. Got bored and logged out.

i guess i dont mind sl being down but only if they fix the attachment problem im having for about two weeks now. i cant wear most of my outfits because my attachments wont work. ive tried everything i can think of. clearing cache and reboots. moving to less laggy regions. ive tried reattaching objects to different body parts. its as if sl doesnt even recognize that my attachments exist anymore.
