I would just like to personally say a HUGE thank you to Amar, Morgaine, Cristalle (I know there are others of you my mind is missing as I write) by posting great info about using the Excel spreadsheet for SL sales.

I'm not kidding when I say that just this morning I was looking through tutorials/books, etc. for some help on this. (In addition to not being very good at using image editing software, I'm not good with numbers and formulas either. English Lit. Major at your service. *grins*)

I opened the forums and Voila!! Just what I need.

Those of you who may have been discouraged or irked by the info not being to the taste of the OP, you helped me a lot (and possibly others who do not post).

guess you'll just have to pay a pro to find out then, or spend your own time researching it online. it's tough to get free advice when you bite advisor, eh?

Out of curiosity, are you totaling your daily sales first and using that data to create the chart, or just trying to create it from the download?

just from the download.. if i was gonna total the figures first then i wouldnt need to look for a formula or graph to work it out would i? i could do it manually as you suggest but isnt that what exel is for?

I contacted Gary in-world and asked to take a look at his worksheet. We figured out the issue he was having with the Date column:

Well Wildefire - since you had the dubious pleasure of communicating with the Illustrious Personage Himself... did he have any input on why he was being such and ass when multiple people offered help - offered advice and hell even offered to do it for him? I looked up another of his posts when I saw where this was going and realized he has a bit of a precedent for such behaviour.

Is that all you've got? I was just about to make a suggestion that might actually help you, but you know what, screw that.

OK, I don't understand what you expect the chart to do for you. If you don't subtotal your data first, Excel is going to try to load every transaction to the chart which, if it even works, will be meaningless. You need data similar to

8/1/08 15,000
8/2/08 20,000
8/3/08 17,000

in order to graph your daily sales. The download should be in date order, so just do the '=SUM (B1:B87)' where transactions end for a given date.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Considering the direction of this thread, I am only posting because I really do get lots of help here, and someone whom I like might benefit from this:

You can fix the date field problem by pasting this formula into cell J2 and copying it down:

=DATE(VALUE(LEFT($F2,4)), VALUE(MID($F2,6,2)), VALUE(MID($F2,9,2)))

You will probably have to format the cell to make it look the way you want.

Then you will need to insert a PivotChart (not a normal chart). That will allow you to total per day.

IF anyone sincerely wants to know how to do this, I might be willing to write up some instructions for it.

Ok no worries. i came here for help and as usual it turns into a joke.

you're crap, read the instructions...

that great advice could work for every single thread made... well done.

someone close this thread please. waste of time.

Well, I wouldn't reply to your question for exactly this reason, even though I teach classes in Excel, especially pivot tables (and the shortest is 2 hours for a reason).

To experienced users the process is clear, but for a user for whom that isn't true, the odds are that there will be a communication issue. I won't attempt an answer because I get enough of people that on one hand want an answer and on the other, don't want to be bothered by details. Your best bet is to take the data in spreadsheet format to someone that is moderately proficient in charting in Excel and have them do it live for you. That has the additional advantage that if the chart isn't what you want, they can do multiple passes in a matter of minutes.

Posts 2,6,11,19 and 29 offered advice specific to how to set it up what you want, and in one case offered to actually do it for you, you ingrate. Several others asked for clarification or directed you to a tutorial that would teach you how to do it. What do you want? Someone to show up at your house and make you a snack then do the work for you while you sit on your lazy ass and watch tv?

Your comment that you come to places like this because you can't be bothered to look at simple instructions makes it pretty clear to me that you are bound for complete failure no matter how much help people here give you. You're just too lazy to actually do any work.
