From: Strauss Ulderport So this forum is now 'come to my (insert location here)' valid place to post? good to know.
Not trying to be a arse clown, however if you do it then that sets precedence for the other 1,000 hangouts, clubs, malls, etc to post here as well to 'remind' people to visit them.
This really IMO is totally inappropriate posting for RA. Strauss, you should go back and read the various threads about the Forum Hangout. The forum regulars came up with the idea, organized it, collected the land purchase price and tier donations, built the place, and furnished it. All volunteers, no profit motive. We just wanted a place where we could get together in world like we do here on RA. A place where everyone would be welcome, like the forums themselves. After it was built, from time to time a thread would appear here, giving news of upcoming events, or reports on hilarious happenings at previous events. The difference between the Forum Hangout and all those other hangouts, clubs, and malls is just this: The Hangout is by and for the enjoyment of people who like the SL Forums. Not for gain, not for fame...simply for fun. And anyone can come. I don't think it's inappropriate at all to mention the Hangout in this forum. It is, in many ways, simply an extension of the forum.

From: Brann Georgia Umm, Lil, did you explain the re-certification process? Make sure they all read the fine print. ssshhhhh - we are handling that part in private and only after they have eagerly received their Boy Toy tag. From: Yosef Okelly Yosef walks into the room and he knows already that he is late. Brown eyes, light brown hair and muscular build and modest height ... in a world of giants and titans he seems remarkably un-remarkable. Pushing a cart, he makes his way into the center of the room. The tails of Yosef's long jacket sway with his steps. Once in the center, Yosef removes the cover from the cart to reveal sweets of all types. Cheesecakes, crème brulee, hot fudge sundaes, red velvet cake, bananas foster, and more arranged in sparkling glass tableware. Yousef unbuttons his heavy jacket and casually slips it from his shoulders. “Who is ready for desert?” he asks as a wickedly, mischievous grin begins to spread across his face. Close enough? Oh My - I'll handle the audition of this one in private.

What about other places that may have their root in these forums (and I am sure there are MANY) so they can use this and other forums as their own person spam forum? I run my club which is certainly 'non-profit' and since it is a extension of this community/forum to, by your logic, I can post about my events and 'inside jokes' too? Point being... a. its a slippery slope and b. your hangout is no more, or less, 'special' they anyone elses and does not get a free pass to disregard the policies.

Strauss:
I would invite club owners to stop interrupting the tunes every five minutes to ask for tips, if you want to feel "non-profit"
The hangout also serves as a quiet place for newbies (who come to the forum to learn about SL) to "get their feet wet" without being overrun by griefers, advertising, people asking for tips and telling them to go their club's mall to buy things, more advertising, superior beings who don't like newbie skin, crowds, and utter confusion. You may recall, perhaps, that just opening a box when you're new is a whole adventure.
I daresay that the hangout is a tad less commercial than any club you can point out. The OP was an invitation to have fun, not to advertise any one SIM. I doubt you'd be quite as bitter if someone had announced a party at their house, on whatever sim.
There are many threads in these forums where interesting places to visit are discussed, which includes people mentioning their own establishments and, YIKES, invitations to shopping trips. And I see you are advertising one in your sig. Surely, you're not saying that such activities ought to stop, too?

I think if I were a noob coming here to ask a question about adjusting flexis I would think twice.
i wonder if we could possibly keep rampant horniness to one thread at a time? just a suggestion ... If we limited it to just one thread, it would not be rampant any more. It would be just plain old horniness

From: Brann Georgia Strauss: I would invite club owners to stop interrupting the tunes every five minutes to ask for tips, if you want to feel "non-profit" When my weekly balance sheet goes into the black then yes I will be happy to say I am 'for profit'. Until then I think I can safely call myself non-profit. That aside, And I can't speak for others, we dont interupt the music every 5 mins. Any other stipulations you got? From: someone The hangout also serves as a quiet place for newbies (who come to the forum to learn about SL) to "get their feet wet" without being overrun by griefers, advertising, people asking for tips and telling them to go their club's mall to buy things, more advertising, superior beings who don't like newbie skin, crowds, and utter confusion. You may recall, perhaps, that just opening a box when you're new is a whole adventure. And what does that have to do with the focus of RA again, I seem to miss that and, again, this sense of entitlement you seem to feel you have. Are you saying (as are certainly implying it) your club is officially endorsed by the lindens? If so then I stand corrected. From: someone I daresay that the hangout is a tad less commercial than any club you can point out. So that makes it ok to use the RA in any way you see fit then? From: someone The OP was an invitation to have fun, not to advertise any one SIM. I doubt you'd be quite as bitter if someone had announced a party at their house, on whatever sim. Again what does that have to do with questions? I am pretty sure more appropriate forums are for such postings. Or are you saying that is not correct and this forum is? From: someone There are many threads in these forums where interesting places to visit are discussed, which includes people mentioning their own establishments and, YIKES, invitations to shopping trips. And I see you are advertising one in your sig. Surely, you're not saying that such activities ought to stop, too? Sigs is one thing, outright spam and then coving it with the excuse you are somehow entitled to post such *IS* my problem. If this is the QUESTIONS forum it should stay that. NOT begging people to come to this establishment or that one. Of course some ppl ask wheres a good spot for this or that, and thats fine to then post such. But starting thread with the sole purpose to advertise is CLEARLY not the point of this forum as others are setup for that. My beef with your self righteousness is we need to self police ourselves since the forums seemingly have been thrown to the dogs. And if people cant follow simple guidelines then that does not bode well. I do not see what is so difficult to admit this is NOT the forum for such a post (others are clearly setup for that) and you have NO MORE entitlement then anyone else here. With your logic to hell with the forum setup lets just have a free for all and post what ever, where ever, when ever we feel entitled to do so. *shrugs* Nothing personal here but the kid gloves have to come off apparently to make my point.

Strauss, if you don't like it, then don't read the thread. Strife would tolerate Hangout threads. Like it or not, the Hangout is part of the Forum community. None of these threads are made for self gain. If you can't understand that, well maybe you are beyond hope.

Okie Doke, let's chill out. Strauss is right this time. It's one thing to banter and derail a legitimate thread, but this one was a bit too self serving. The sniping and potshots don't help either. As one of the Groups owners I'm gonna report it and ask it be closed. And apologize to Strauss and the Forum for it. We need to play nice.

I was going to say, when Strife was moding there were plenty of threads about the FORUM hangout. Mainly, I would suspect, because it is a place created by and for those that post at the forums. I dont see you complaining on all the other threads, why just this particular one? No, dont answer it, I dont really wanna know, just thinking out loud. Lots of people have always enjoyed the Forum Hangout threads, even a mod didnt lock em up unless they got too long and a new one needed to be started. They are always a hoot n a half

From: Dinalya Dawes I was going to say, when Strife was moding there were plenty of threads about the FORUM hangout. Mainly, I would suspect, because it is a place created by and for those that post at the forums. I guess Strauss missed the handout of secret decoder rings. From: Strauss Ulderport From: someone The hangout also serves as a quiet place for newbies (who come to the forum to learn about SL) to "get their feet wet" without being overrun by griefers, advertising, people asking for tips and telling them to go their club's mall to buy things, more advertising, superior beings who don't like newbie skin, crowds, and utter confusion. You may recall, perhaps, that just opening a box when you're new is a whole adventure. And what does that have to do with the focus of RA again The area you quoted didn't give you a clear answer? Isn't this Resident Answers? When new people come to the forums we're all here to help each other out. Sometimes it involves snide and sarcastic comments but the answer's are always given. The Forum Cartel is open to all, the group chat is a great place to get answers to a question when a noobie is in doubt. So, I guess 'the focus of RA' would be to point out another in-world place for resident support. From: Chris Norse Strauss, if you don't like it, then don't read the thread. Exactly. I'm sure a mod will come along real soon and clean it up for you.

I think the Forum Cartel is a very unique organization and place of chat since it was created by forum members for forum members. How cool is it that we can ask questions AND go to the Cartel to have a demonstration of help if necessary. Every visit has been a pleasure and decent conversation with someone new. Strife was very lenient with the Forum Cartel threads...they would go on for a bit and then be locked. Since there is little to no moderation, we have more flexibility in the rules now. In my opinion this thread is no harm no foul.

Bismuth beat me to it... I was going to ask Strauss if he's been to the Hangout. It's not a club or a commercial venture. It's a crossroads, a by-the-people-for-the-people back yard, really. And "the people" are the community of Resident Answers.
One of my favorite things at the Hangout is seeing a newbie who has been in the forums, afraid to post questions, wander in and ask them there. It's a safe place to do that because it's an extension of these forums. That means it includes the random silliness that crops up here in the forums and the serious stuff, too. Just like with reading the forums, I've laughed hard while I've been there plenty of times, and I've cried a few times (oh I did NOT just admit that). And I've helped a lot of newbies who came wandering in, looking for answers.
Strauss, I wish you all the luck in the metaverse with your establishment. Really. But trying to take away a piece of the forum community because you worry it's in competition with you isn't going to play well to this audience. Please come by the hangout and say hi. If I'm there, I'd like to meet you and hear about your club, about your opinions about Second Life. And I'll even be happy to debate this face to face. It's what we do there because it's just like the Forums, only our avatars get to play along, too.

I agree, Feline.
A veteran of a few tentative posts in here, I ventured into the Forum Hangout at the weekend. The people I met were very charming, I was made to feel extremely welcome and I will certainly go back. Wasn't there for more than half an hour or so, but I enjoyed it.
Thumbs up to those involved.

If anything the Hangout is a great place for someone with a business to promote. I encourage anyone with a business to drop by and chat. Let us know about your place. The shopping trips are becoming a success, perhaps club hopping can be another outing. Like someone said, the place has become a crossroads, a way station for SL travelers, old and new. Members can use the place as a Home location, there is a nice little sky box for changing or other private activity, there are game tables, the hot tub and conversation pit, the docks with great open water access. Maybe you are too shy to ask your questions here. Drop by, someone will probably have an answer. Or use the Group IM, despite opinion to the contrary, we encourage it for questions or just general banter.
Because it isn't a commercial venue, there is no regular traffic flow, people just drop by. But when we do have a planned event, they show up in great numbers, and we usually run events for many hours so all time zones are covered. I have to admit I was the most skeptical when this projet was launched, I really thoought it would destroy the little group Chris and I put together, but happily I was wrong. The group has continued to grow, the latest influx of members has brought in some absolutely delightful people.
