So then I come to a thread that's entitled, "I hate Bots with a vengeance ...", and I think, why? Why would anyone write that? I can understand someone writing that they hate some things about bots - filling sims, causing lag, whatever, but why would anyone hate bots with a vengeance? I don't shop in places where bots are used and abused. This is my choice. I also don't AR them. I am fully aware that some shop owners don't give a hoot about little old me and my wallet, and any sales they'll miss. I don't avoid buying in those places to teach those owners a lesson, but more because I prefer to encourage those who don't use bots. Again, my choice.
The customer is not be always right, and I don't ask owners to lick my boots, but no one has to tell me more than once that my single purchase is insignificant. I don't go back to places where I feel I'm not appreciated, not as retaliation but because I'm not a masochist.

OK...without really reading all the posts in here, I ran into 3 bots the other day (literally) I visited Orientation Island to maybe help a 'new citizen' or two and found the LZ with 3 bots from LL just sitting there in awkward positions, all scrunched up. There were quite a few 'regulars' milling around complaining about the bots.
I suspect that LL placed them there to record everything...and by the way, if you cuss out a bot or anyone else in their presence, there is a chat history and you can potentially get AR'ed. I think those 3 bots were LL's solution to monitoring OI without the presence of mentors or Linden's themselves. It certainly is less costly to monitor that way then by having a Linden 'physically' present at the time...Bots don’t collect a salary. I am not for, or against bots. If a region has lag because of bots, I simply (as Phil said) vote with my wallet...I take my business somewhere else. No use stressing out over a non-entity. It would be like getting pissed at a car for sitting in the road next to your house. The car is not able to respond with any self aware stream of consciousness...I would simply walk around the car if it were in my way.

Alicia, how do you know the bots were causing the lag and not anything else? Because I really do want to know what impact bots have. As I stated in another thread, I do see almost no network traffic, they dont use script or wear prims, they just sit on my furniture. Now I do have only 2, but how much difference would 20 make in sim performance? That they keep 20 regular people from visiting the sim put aside, I am just interested in lag in this case.

Greetings Marcel I actually did some looking into the effect of AVs on sim performance when we had a private island (before we built anything so it was empty). What I Figured out was that AV's even uncomplicated ones were some of the biggest CLIENT side lag inducers because of the polygons needed to render their shapes and the multiple layers of textures (often 512 or larger). 2 AVs you probably wont notice so much. 20? Yeah you are into ouch land. |

Greetings Marcel for a simple fact that the lag was gone when the bot got disconnected and you could feel the impact after they got back so 1 + 1 = 2, bots suck and lag, and defenetly when there are 30+ |

I did not say I know for sure. In other words there is some speculation about why the bots were even there in the LZ at OI. About bots causing lag, I couldn't care less in commercial areas, I would be upset if it were happening where I 'virtually' live.

Could it be they depend on residents to be their eyes and ears?
