It is the attitude that stops my buying from a resident.

Like what was shown in this thread.
That the result of all the nastiness that's come way in this forum, from people who run out of reasonable arguments, so they resort to nastiness.

I'd rather have no traffic at all than have to resort to bots or campers as a means of tricking people to my sites.

To steal from "Field of Dreams", if you build a good site, they will come.

And please, anyone who hasn't already, vote on this Jira to make traffic go away. If they take traffic away, there will be less of a system to game/abuse and extort.

Phil Linden used to support SL Banking ..
As you very well know, I've said many times, that I would be perfectly happy to see the end of traffic.

From: Brenda Connolly
It can if Roland has friends who feel the same way, and they decide not to buy from "Joe Avatar, who uses bots" maybe they get a few more people to do the same. It usually doesn't happen, we know. But I just think itis plain stupid for any business owner, especially if they claim SL is their livlihood, to show that kind of sneering condescention publicly toward ANY potential customers, especially at a time where many businesses are complaining of declines in sales.
I understand your reasoning, Brenda. I don't think we've actually met, tho I do have a bad memory, but if we had met, and got to know each other, you'd know that my attitude in this forum is just for this forum, and for nowhere else. It's come about because of the nastiness of some people here. You may remember back a while, when I used to discuss things logically here, and I had some respect for it even though many people disagreed with my reasonings. But there has been so much nastiness thrown at me that I'm now very cynical here, and I'm much more likely to go on the attack first. In fact, this is the second thread in which I've gone on attack first.

About the livelihood bit: Yes it does produce a livelihood, but I don't actually need it, so it's not something that I desperately need to protect.

I have no problem with bots that serve a legitimate business purpose. Heck, why were computers invented in the first place?

I have a problem with the ethics of stuffing a skybox full of bots for the specific purpose of gaming the system. But, hey, if the Lindens want to promote the bad blood on the grid and allow it, knock your socks off. Just don't look for my name on your customer list.

It took a good while but the Lindens finally heard the screams of the residents to do something about the ad farms. Eventually, the same will happen to traffic bots. Just takes enough residents to raise their voices loud enough for the Lindens to finally hear them.

However - it is possible they would keep traffic but ban trafficbots. Stranger things have happened. Ask the adfarmers.

I don't really want traffic to go away, since it helps in several ways (as a site builder, it helps me determine if changes I make are received positively or negatively). What I would like to see if traffic become more accurate.

One thing I would suggest is that traffic be averaged based on the size of the land, and maximum allowed people (40 for mainland cannot currently compete with 80 on private islands).

For example, a site owner who only uses 1/4 of a sim, but gets 20-25 visitors at any one time should be roughly equal to a private sim owner who has a maximum of 80 people.

Just my opinion.

It is possible though that ..

If trafficbots were still allowed and something like this were implemented, it would make Trafficbots even more attractive.

My above suggestion was in my dream SL where all traffic is real and not campers or bots.

Phil, no one loves a cynic more than me, I built 9,000 posts in just over a year on it, and am not ashamed one bit. But if that is the case and it has affected you so, then I suggest you take the High Road and just don't respond. By saying that, all you have done is given people more reason to attack you as now you have proclaimed you are saying things just to be spiteful, no better than a Common Troll. You're better than that. That's all I'm going to say on it, I am really the last person to be giving forum decorum lectures to anyone.

As far as the business goes, just my opinion,If you don't need it and don't have to protect it, than it really isn't a livelihood. it's just a hobby. Which is fine, I think that's what SL businesses should be for the most part.

Phil, if this forum was a meeting of the AA (for example), you'd be getting applause from all and sundry for the frankness of your admission.

But somehow, I don't think you were referring to yourself here.

You've seen it only twice, Colette - in this thread, and in a recent thread. Prior to those two, I never attacked first - I responded to nastiness, but never initiated it.

Can't say I understand that, but I did miss a word ("my";) out of what you quoted. It should have read:-

"That the result of all the nastiness that's come my way in this forum, from people who run out of reasonable arguments, so they resort to nastiness."

As I said, you're not the first, and you're wasting your time. Allow me to enlighten you...

Not long ago, I submitted a ticket, stating that I run traffic bots, and asking if it was ok. A Linden live helper pushed the ticket through so that I would get the answer quickly, and I did. The answer was, "As long as the bot accounts do not prevent residents from entering a region, negatively impact the region in any other way, or cause distress or harassment to other residents, then the bot accounts would be acceptable under the current Terms of Service."

So you see, the bots are acceptable to LL, and you wasted your time. If you don't want your time to be wasted, a better use of it would be to press LL to get rid of the Places search, although you may still be wasting your time. However, it worked for ad farms, and it might work for traffic. You never know.

Phil there's something called netiquette and I'm sure you know about it, saying that you do something that is not against the LL TOS doesn't make you a good internet citizen, but just someone that can worm around silly and archaic rules, but not respecting the more important ones, again: The netiquette. The main rule is: there's a human being on the other side.

Putting a bunch of alts in the sky doesn't make you very clever neither. Clever people has better ways to promote themselves.

You are right, of course. It was the "many, perhaps most" thread that did it. It was like a feeding frenzy, and the people who were feeding were so idiotic as to think that they knew better than the author as to what the author meant. They were just plain nasty - and that's being kind.

So then I come to a thread that's entitled, "I hate Bots with a vengeance ...", and I think, why? Why would anyone write that? I can understand someone writing that they hate some things about bots - filling sims, causing lag, whatever, but why would anyone hate bots with a vengeance? To me, it showed a bad attitude, and I decided to show an attitude about a person who would write such a thing.

We need bots. They help us to identify the unpopular places and dumb land owners.

YAY for bots!!
