A fantasy world awash with sex and porn

And what's so wrong with that?

But seriously, SL is what you want it to be. One could argue that the Internet in general is "a fantasy world awash with sex and porn" because there is plenty of it out there if it is what you seek. It's worth noting too that virtual sex can also be a great release for the physically disabled and for couples separated by distance.

SL is also an 18+ environment. It is not a place for "real" children anyway. There is plenty of dirty ugly hate in the real world that we face everyday. Seeing a couple of furries getting it on in a park, or stumbling into a BDSM club is not going to kill ya.

Personally, my interest in SL tends to be more educational and arts oriented. I sometimes refer to SL as 'the Internet you have to dress up for.' There is so much to see and do here that is not sexual and it's a lazy writer who sums it up that way because they do not want to take the time to explore the wide variety of resident content and activities.

For example, I'm going to stop by the Globe Theatre to watch 12th Night later today (have a lovely appropriate outfit to wear too). Later this weekend, I am hoping to get a reluctant resident whose recovering from surgery to go fishing with me (something she loves to do in RL). My musician friends will be practicing controlling their avis and animations so they can eventually perform in SL. So much to do, so little time. Sex is always optional.

from the article "I decided to familiarise myself with its features by 'transporting' Tomsen to the ten most popular locations of the virtual universe"

Ten most popular locations? Isn't that the popular places list? How long ago did he do the "research" for this article?

By looking at the pictures he had... it was a long time ago... Sad...

Hey, was this that avatar who was asking the other day for a verified account so he could find the sex?

Apparently not. "Tomahawk Tomsen", the reporter's avatar, has no forum posts.

Of course that's what they're reporting on. Everything else is boring in comparison. Sex Sells. Isn't The Daily Mail basically a tabloid? "Virtual World Provides Limitless Creative And Business Opportunities" doesn't have the same impact.

I imagine Adz's SL Name thing could tell how old "Tomsen" is.

ROFL! I just realized that the woman in the picture leading the story has three breasts.

Too many people think that sex in RL is "bad stuff" so it's only natural they would feel that way in SL.

Sex, like most bodily functions, belongs in private and should be shared with only 3 to 6 people at any one time . I think it's this lack of discretion that is the problem in SL; it's all over the place, and that's what shocks people. It's not the nature of the activities as such, but the ubiquitousness of them. Real life has a seedy underbelly; but in Second Life that has become it's seedy upperbelly/obtrusive anatomical part of your choice. Metaphorically, if sex in real life can be represented by genitals hidden behind modest clothing, sex in Second Life is like a proud phallus revealed to all the world.

In real life, sex clubs, for example, exist but they are generally in unobtrusive suburban houses or in seedy back alleys - not next door to the local groccery store. We have PG and Mature sims, but that still doesn't entirely separate things when there are plenty of non-sexual stores one might wish to visit that choose to locate in Mature sims to be on the safe side.

There's too much sex and I'm not having it....and that's what's wrong.

Well...

Can it be cause Sex belongs in private and should be shared with only 1 masterbating alone) to 6 (? Only 6?) people at a time?

See... you get none, cause you have excluded yourself in that count...

If it were only sex OR porn, that would be a different matter. But both together is simply reprehensible!!!

However, to be fair...

Back when I first joined, the SL Map function had, as a selectable option, something like "Most Popular". I remember quite clearly that the icon was a little orange "thumbs up" symbol. I don't see it on my map anymore, nor do I remember how many locations there were (perhaps there were ten, maybe). But yes, as a brand noob, when I opened the map I checked those places out first. Neva was one of them. A couple other similar places too, I think. Also Money Island. I think the locations were automatically chosen based on metrics; I can't see a Linden choosing to advertise Neva as one of The Places To Go in SL.

We can argue if we wish that the news media ignores the parts of Second Life that we believe would show it in the best light. But it can hardly be denied that sex is wildly popular here. It is not difficult in any way whatsoever to believe the article's claim that a visit to the most "popular" places by traffic would find anyone, noob or otherwise, several orgy rooms. No, it's not something that ALL of us do...but if we look at the numbers, it certainly seems to be something that the bulk of us, if not most of us, do.

Also, since this article only passingly mentions the child-av-sex problem, I'm guessing they probably didn't find any of the Bad Places, or talk to any of the crusaders. They probably simply deduced that it happens: if the most popular activity in SL is having sex, and if it is possible to make your avatar child-like, it logically follows that some people have chosen to do both at the same time. The fact that all those orgy rooms have to have notecards and huge signs saying "NO CHILD AVATARS" would naturally support that conclusion as well.

Between 3 and 6 is the optimum number. Any more and it becomes squalid, any less and it becomes dull.

I'm not sure if that answers your point because I couldn't make sense of it.

Surely sex in Second Life is just a sort of porn really.

I see it more as a form of masturbation.... if really somethings happens that is.

Mutual masturbation then. I think of it as two (or more) people co-authoring a particularly bad animated porn film. Hentai at it's worst (which is saying something).
