And the first thing the barman hears is "You quack me up"

So well stated!

Linda, you have nailed it! I completely agree with your logic -- so many times I have (in my half-assed male way) tried to get this across to newcomers in SL. Maybe the easiest factor of all is age... if you spend a few hours conversing with someone its not hard to tell- at least in decades, someones's age. But I would not wager a lot on that either.
Its not your gender, race, creed, or age... its how you treat me that matters in SL.
Sending you a Blue Ribbon :-)

The OP does not Get It.

OP...Second Life is not FaceBook. A lot of people are here to play something that they are not. Staid housewives become wanton escorts. Shy people become party animals. Other people become animals, period. Physically handicapped people become Arnold Schwarzeneggers. And yes, people cross genders.

There are a lot of reasons people do that. Many are transgendered, and in SL they finally get to be the person they've been inside all along. Some are curious about what life is like for the "other half". Some just like to look at a cute ass as their camera follows their avatar around. None of these reasons have anything to do with YOU. That is, they're not out to make you feel "violated and offended".

Why worry about it? Just accept a person as they are. Unless you get into a very serious relationship with someone, their RL gender or age or physical appearance has no more importance than the color of their eyes.

SL can be a truly broadening experience. I'm a middle aged WASP, and politically and sexually pretty conservative. But here I've met people of all ages, all walks of life, hugely varying beliefs and life experiences. You know what? An awful lot of them have turned out to be really nice people, and I've made a lot of friends here.

Try a little tolerance, for gods' sake.

Oh...and your stereotyping really sucks. Believe me, you CAN'T tell a person's gender from their typing, or their word choice, or even their voice (with or without a voice changer). Desmond thinks he can do it by noticing personal space preferences, but I think that one fails too. Your very best bet is to ask them, politely. And then believe their answer, and learn to live with a little uncertainty.

More likely something his Mother probably said...."Stop playing that stupid game, and come up from the basement. Your dinner is getting cold!"

Through many experiences I have found that not everything is as it appears to be in this world. I have truely felt violated and offended to find out someone I thought I knew was a a Man and there are Many men playing as women. To ALL you new comers, and for those who wonder who you are really talking with, there are ways and things to notice. For one most men don't type well and are a little slower than women and men are sloppy. that is most. Some men are fast at the keyboard, but come on do you really believe someone that was that talented would be spending time on a game......Plain and simple if you want to know ask them to voice with you if they are not hiding anything they will do it with no excuses even just a simple sentence to say this is who I really am. If not they are hiding who they are for a reason. I respect all you people who play this game as honest people. Those who don't will get what is coming to them in the end. REMEMBER VOICE IS A GREAT TOOL TO KNOW WHO YOU ARE PLAYING WITH IN WORLD

Hm. I am conflicted. Should I deliberately type like shit in SL so noone questions my maleness? Or is my typing bad enough as it is? I mean, I play a female in RL, and while I don't feel all that good at it, I seem to have everyone fooled there at least.

Unlike most of the participants in the forums (male, female or otherwise) I can read accurately too . . .

Pep (And the OP said "many", "most" and "some", *not* ALL)

Is there something you should be telling us? Hmmm? :D

Ok...back on topic...what if it's a woman pretending to be a man who pretends to be a woman...just so she can get a job as a female impersonator in a club?

I have admitted before that in rl I may be a lesbian soul trapped in the body of an alpha male.

Makes sense. Alpha textures are easy to see through.

I suppose if someone really wanted to be "sure" they could go to the TG clubs...

I'm not sure what they'd be sure of, but at least they'd be sure.

Hm, I have a female shape in RL, male shape in SL. Tried SL in a female shape but felt I was leading people on and could not bring myself to communicate with anyone, so I ditched it. But if there is money to be made.. After all, I have years and years of practice pretending to be female. ;)

Do you have any work you should be doing, Key? I mean, are you dossing off or shouldnt you be slogging away at the old 9to5? According to my watch you have at least 6 more hours to go (including 5 minutes off for lunch) before you can consider it time to thread teh Friday needle. Just think of having me as your friendly bossess! (Just jokes, I think?)
