I gave up caring who was behind the keyboard. If I expect them to accept me as a brown eyed handsome man, the least I can do is treat them like the red haired vixen they appear to be. I guess I'm stuck in the "don't ask, don't tell" era.

I find people's indignation and outrage over being "lied to" in a virtual world to be a very useful indicator that:

* You don't get what SL is about
* You're just trolling for sex
* You're no one I would ever want to know

I'm much more interested in seeing who people WANT to be in SL than worrying about who they are in RL.

There is very well thought out article on gender it's geared towards young people but
I think it really applies to those in SL who are new to this whole gender freedom.
Do a google search on this topic "Genderpalooza! A Sex & Gender Primer" it should show up for those who are interested in something more then Jerry Springer type mentality discussion.

I got it from Realasim (I think it's how it's spelled) but being colorblind it's hard for me to match the skin tones right. If it's bright green or what ever, that's the problem. It's not an SL STD -- it's my eyes.

I have never been one to turn down casual sex, but I do want to actually know and like the person I'm with.

I'm surprised that no one (at least as far as I've seen) complains about people being older than they seem. Seriously.

At first I used to worry about telling my real age, but soon I found that most of the people who I wanted to hang around with were near my RL age.

It was a nice discovery, and it makes sense (to me, anyway).

But even in casual encounters, although I get the occasional "Do you do voice?" NO ONE asks me whether I am older than their mother.

Its because there are a few rare souls who are perpetually 22 and are blessed by that. You are one of them. I pray I will also be one as well.

I don't care how old people are, as long as they aren't children getting on the main grid.

I don't want to know about people's RL. Your imaginary Second Life is probably a lot more interesting.

I get an occasional "oh wow you're old".
Everyone has a real age inside, and there's people who were born 16-going-on-55 (and joined the Libertarian Youth Alliance in high school), and others are still 22-and-WTF-happened-to-everyone-else at 80.

One of my early friends whom sadly has now departed SL was deaf. She told me a little about her RL (could have been lying of course but the circumstances didn't warrant it). In her case she said that communication in RL was at times very difficult, in SL she was on a level and considered the same.

This whole "prove yourself" is just utter rot as others have already eloquently pointed out.

If it's a guy asking, "prove you're female", is that really what he's asking? No, I don't think so, next he wants to know how attractive you are etc etc.

I bet if they were told "yes i'm female, quadraplegic, hideously burned from an accident and suffering from leprosy" they'd be pretty disinterested. Be what you want to be, answer to no-one.
