Osman comes back from the field, grabs my shotgun.
"Where's Enver?"
"In the field."
"That's what I thought. What you want the shotgun for?"
"Ants."
"Ants!?"
"Ants. F@ckers are stripping the wheat."
"Stripping the wheat!?"
"Hardly a grain left. Big hill. Enver's watching it."
"What you gonna do with the shotgun?"
"Teach the sons of whores a lesson."
I shake my head and carry on with whatever. Osman goes back to the field. Quarter of an hour later, the silence is broken by a blast deep in the valley. There is a similar interval before Osman calls me out of the house. Enver is with him this time. Osman swings the shotgun over the gate.
"Can you give us a lift into town?"
"Why?"
"See the surgeon."
Enver gestures to their feet: shredded pant legs, blood and grit from the buckshot on both of them.
"What the f@ck happened?"
"I think we killed one," says Osman.
"Two injured our side," says Enver.
