Sailed around Zindra tonight to check out the builds. Only ran into one set of ban lines and understand totally why they were there, I'm not a member of the group and that's good enough for me [ what was it Groucho said about groups.. oh right, I wouldn't be member of one that would have me lol] Anyway, I do wish that folks would have had a chance to know who their neighbors would be [from a "style" perspective] .. right now it's pretty much a huge mix of styles and the FL Wright in me is eeking "Fascinating" as Spock would say. BTW sim crossings are very hairy. I was looking to see if there would be Mall space to rent, but it's way too soon for that. Part of me wants all the BDSM stuff to be in a Tyrolian setting, with high mountains, have all the Escorts in beach areas and so on... the mind boggles Wonder where the War games will be held? I'll check back often to see it all unfold, I guess. It would be nice to have other boat/car/plane rez areas scattered around. [like by the Safe Zone Hud..hint hint for sailing]

They do suck, but they are a tool people have, why take it away... it's a privilege. That said, I've never used them and never probably will, but yeh, if you need to for what ever reason why take away the ability.
The hassle from not being able to put them up is probably worse than bumping into them at times.

From: Jannae Karas They both keep unwanted folks off of your turf. So what the heck do you mean? At least a couple of important differences. For my purposes as a driver and sometimes scripter of vehicles, banlines near roads are Teh Evol because just touching them breaks everything--and it's damned hard not to touch them with sim handoffs in the state they're in. In contrast, a security script almost never does its deed before you've had a chance to recover control and get the vehicle back on the road. Banlines also only go 50m above ground level, so somebody (vehicle scripter or not) who has nothing on the ground is protecting the privacy of precisely nothing by erecting banlines, whereas a security script might at least serve some purpose.

From: Danziel Lane Yep banlines are legal.

SL is creative and showing creativity. Banlines are the contrary.
SL is communication and neighbourhood and friendship. Banlines demostrate the contrary attitude.
Zindra is just in a process to being given to many residents at the same time. Banlines hinder from doing that without barriers.
Banlines are legal. But creative, communicative human beings that come together in a virtual word .. what do they need banlines for. Even in the adult continent?
SL is for the creative people. Banlines is for the people that don't want others to take part.

There are many things that are legal and are stupid at the same time. Legal is different from smart. Sometime smart fits legal, sometimes not. Sometimes stupid fits legal, sometimes not.
I do not feel sad about banlines. I feel sad for the people who need them. I wish you could hear my applause !!!

From: Chris Norse Why do you think you should be able to come on my land if I don't want you there? Why should it matter if I am online or not? I pay for it. Why shouldn't I be able to post my land as no trespassing if I so choose? Banlines are the only way to do this. I totally agree, camera movements need to stop at a parcel edge. It all comes down to principle. You believe in theft, I do not. You profess to help people in sl you block em out youre a HYPOCRIT

Hi Qie. Flying above 50 meters over someone's parcel seems like a good idea. I agree that one with no builds on the ground is foolish indeed (or ignorant of the tool) to use ban lines. For sailing, I often sail through out Sansara's and Heterocera's waterways generally without incident despite the numerous ban lined parcels. In truth though, I am more likely to be found around Blake's sea or Nautilus Island nowadays. Don't drive much. You are so right about sim crossings and control. In the only place that I use ban lines (around my beach and house) there is a 4 meter set back from the river bank as I believe in free waterways, even though I own the river on both banks. On the ocean side it does not matter as it is void. I actually never used ban lines until recently. In the spirit of Zindra I have decided to limit access to the mature content on my land. The rest of the parcel is open for public use. As to other opinions, what Chris said. Now that viewing the red lines is optional, I am less inclined to find fault with land owners who are using a tool given to them by LL. In the end, what one does with one's land is really no one else's business as long as tos and cs are being followed. Like having the ability to edit terrain, build ugly structures or flatten interesting terrain with poorly textured mega prim grass bases, some people will use tools better than others. p.s. Unlike some who have posted on this issue, ny response to ban lines or security orbs is not to cam into the space. Politeness would suggest that someone wants some privacy.

It's just a ride and we can change it any time we want. It's only a choice. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your door, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one.

Me, I never peep in, I just go, but yeh, it's true the cam tool is there, but the ban lines at least prevent that type of intrusive person from strolling on in to your home during your private moments with their big prim dick out, eh.

From: Jannae Karas Actually, you do not need to see them unless you want to. That is if you are running the new client or one of the newer variants. I was anti ban line for so long, but with the new state of paranoia in SL, they seem to be a necessity. Neither security orbs nor ban lines are necessary. They provide no privacy, negligible security, and cause far more problems than they solve whether you can see them or not. In fact they cause more problems when you can't see them, if you're on a vehicle... I want to INCREASE their visibility, not decrease them. Oh, the audio-cock comment? http://www.jwz.org/doc/linuxvideo.html#From: jwz From: makali Whenever a programmer thinks, "Hey, skins, what a cool idea", their computer's speakers should create some sort of cock-shaped soundwave and plunge it repeatedly through their skulls. I am fully in support of this proposed audio-cock technology. That's how I feel about ban lines. Someone at Linden Labs needs to be on the receiving end of this technology for that idea. Every fictional VR out there, including the one SL was allegedly inspired by, has private space. REAL private space. We NEED http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/svc-205

At that range, some small items like pictures on the dresser don't show, but you can still see people and objects larger than people. And there is nothing to prevent anyone from using a free flight assist device and flying up to the same altitude, to get a closer look.

You have to get yourself a skybox at 1500 metres in the air ^_^ Its out of reach of the cam!! It is not about privacy from camming. If you want to stand in the park that I have provided (free of charge) and cam into my house, I could care less. You will undoubtedly find it rather a dull experience though. 0n the other hand, you will be unable to walk into my close proximity, or engage me in chat. That is more than enough privacy for me. Also, one would have to explain to LL how they came to view any mature (now adult I guess) content within the enclosed portion of the zone to AR. In my case this consists of two framed black and white photos of burlesque queens of the 1920's. Sad to say, but I am suffering from the paranoia brought about by the new (and tragically written) content rating system.

I doubt very seriously that your use (or anyone's for that matter) of a vehicle will suffer from an encounter with my ban zone. I live pretty out of the way, and as I have already stated, I have been very careful to leave a sufficient easement for travelers who may be exploring the river by whatever means. If they wish, they could hop a gypsy pose ball at my place and swim for that matter. I would also be in favor of more visible ban lines, now that the option exists to toggle their visibility on and off as need be.

It's not just that ban lines screw up travel, it's also that the existence of ban lines means that there's nobody at Linden Labs working on providing a real solution to the problems that they more or less completely fail to solve.

It's a really nice place, and I paid dearly to aquire it. I do have some builds up in the sky. I have my space port where I dock my Nightshade and also a building platform. I have used the extreme cam distance "feature" from time to time to locate those "Woops, where did that prim go!" building experiences.

If anything, banlines should (optionally) include camming, to block avatar cameras from entering such parcels AND to block cameras from targetting anything on such parcels.
Another option would be to "void" objects and avatars inside such parcels: People without the right permissions won't see anything rezzed on those parcels, simply by not sending information about the things there to the client at all. This would drastically reduce client side lag as well, so you can't go wrong with it.
Both options would be optional additions after enabling banlines first, of course. And both ideas have been in the JIRA, both with lots of votes, but it seems like we won't ever see either one.
Same with the variable-height banlines, there was this idea to allow moving banlines up and down. Not increasing their size, but only their elevation. So people could make their skybox a banned area, while leaving the ground accessible to all.
But it seems we just have to live with the fact that privacy is not a feature of SL, and any griefer is allowed to investigate your house and AR you at will.

It's perfectly acceptable to set up one's land in a way one prefers, within LL TOS and CS of course.
I have land that is open and I have a tiny lot that has a ban line around it. I don't care about admitting that. I want one place where I can go and not have to think about the door behind me opening, or someone coming in and bouncing all over the furniture as just recently happened in a place I *don't* have a ban line. People don't respect boundaries always. If they did, no one would have a ban line.
He who pays makes the rules, it's that way in RL as well as in SL, sad to say. And I always say I'd much rather bounce off a ban line, than be thrown home by some orb I didn't even see and have no clue how I set it off. Especially the way my av loves to lag and fly to kingdom come lately, zooming past a sim or two, while I sit and watch. :/

From: Argent Stonecutter When all you have is a stick, everything looks like a kneecap. Heh, actually I have some toys in RL that are much cooler than sticks. I live in a very remote location, and for some reason the ban line option is greyed out. I have Ms. Glock and Mr. Benelli as companions, and my background includes extensive training in the efficient application of their unique abilities. BTW, my grandfather raised ferrets. He was a farmer, and hired them out to other farmers to get rid of pests that burrow.
