From: Chris Norse Why do you think you should be able to come on my land if I don't want you there? Why should it matter if I am online or not? I pay for it. Why shouldn't I be able to post my land as no trespassing if I so choose? Banlines are the only way to do this. I totally agree, camera movements need to stop at a parcel edge. It all comes down to principle. You believe in theft, I do not. Right you are Chris. Eh, the new viewer gives an option to make ban lines visible or not, at your discretion. That was always my problem with them. Didn't like to see them from my front porch. Now they serve their actual purpose non-griefer like. Why do people feel such a need to walk around other people's land? Maybe they should buy some of their own. It's pretty darned cheap right now.

From: Danziel Lane Sorry, but there is no privacy in SL.
On the contrary: if you set up banlines, you make people curious, they will find the green dot(s) on map and minimap and know where to look. If you watch the camera positions in the advanced menu you will find out, how often there are two avatars in your sex bed, but 3 or 4 cameras in the room.
With a camera control that ignores banlines, those red stripes of characters only have one purpose: to tell: Look here, stranger! The avatars behind these banlines might just do something naughty! Come and watch! Sounds like you have your tecnique for peeping down cold.

ban lines + business = stupid (yes even if the business is above, because you never know if people will use a LM or a direct TP, and don't get me started on fixed landing spots)
ban lines + no content under +50m of ground = stupid (for any reason... it's just pointless and shows you are a moron)
ban lines + anything else = annoying, but theoretically not stupid. (oh noes, somone might fly by or look at my stuff... but ban them all ::eyeroll:: this is only really understandable if you have problems being harassed while online at ground level)

Even if someone cams in, they are not spamming me with chat that I probably am not in the mood for. That's why there are public places in SL. My home is very nice, but it is not a public place. I maintain a public beach and recreation area on the other side of the river from my home. Any non-griefer is always welcome to swim, use the tire swing, floats or any of the other cool things that I put there at my expense. The river is also freely navigable for all as it winds through my place. The one river bank and land up to the ocean beach beyond are my private space. No one can (or should want to) go there unless I want them to.

I don't feel sad for the people who have issues with ban lines. Some people like land they rent for themselves.
If I owned land now- I'd still have object rezzing and entry turned off. Above 50m, I'd use security orbs for a skybox.
Call it ugly, thats not the point. Its not your land, who are you to say what they should do with it?
Having access to ways of making them invisible is something I always suggested.

From: Meade Paravane ...and ban lines that go out into the water? Invisible ban lines already exist. If the banned parcel is on the other side of a sim boundary, then they are not visible. It a complete no-warning bummer. Opposite my place in Miller, there is a sort of graveyard/Bermuda_Triangle of boats in the middle of the river. It's whare the boats have hit the invisible lines and bounced out the passengers. It's open water. The boaters have no interest other than progressing up along the river. The parcel is completely empty and only used for prims in a separate land parcel in the same sim. The owners ban because they can, and not because they particularly need to. The Southern river in Zindra used to have parcelling that stopped just short of the waterline. Now many parcels extend into the water. There are ban lines in some of those parcels. Banning people from passing along that bit of water is "just because I can". There is no threat. It just causes ugliness - visually and psychologically.

While I am careful to use the land tools to allow open water access through or past my own personal space, that is just because I believe in open water. One of my neighbors went so far as to not only put up lines, but she built a wall as well. Only person on the whole course of the river in North Islandia to do so. Her excuse is that she is constantly being spammed and griefed otherwise, but still she coulda' left the water open. Still, for the flying community, you really have no need to fly below ban line space over residential land. And for all sailing/flying enthusiasts (I am one myself) there is a fairly large space known as Blake's Sea. It is attached to some other pretty big spaces where you can play to your heart's content.

ok my take.....
Ban lines are not against anything. We had to do banlines for a bit cause was getting tired of banning idiots that thought our house was theirs. And they would say so.
I dont mind them being in the park part of our land that is fine, that is public.... but dont go coming into our house and well make yourself at home! We bought and pay for that land.
Had 2 the other day.. I was afk at the time but I came back and I heard them talking I said please leave, silence I went downstairs and said please leave now! They said this is SL and we dont have to... I said ok then by the count of 3 if you are not gone I will boot and ban you.. then we will AR you for discriminating I said for what? and I do keep chat logs (cleaned it up for here, wont repeat what they said) I counted 1, 2, 3 OUT! and they didnt so I booted and banned! (by the way they were not new ones! they have been here longer then I have)
Yes we could get a security system and are working on that but dang have a bit of..... I dont know hey here is a house we shouldnt go in that. Hmmm maybe that is respect.... and if I do come home and ask you to please leave then do so and dont get high and mighty.
I am patient the first 2 times on requesting you to leave then after that well you know what? we will boot and ban!
Ok end of rant and end of my take.
Bec

I hate ban lines too. But ya know, freedom blah blah blah. And it is nicer than just ejecting people. You can also turn ban lines off if you don't wanna see em.

They suck to be around, but if someone wants them for what ever reason, it's probably pretty important to them. Bit like a lock on a r/l house door.
Not having access to them might be worse.
it's just more control to the user. That's always over all a good thing.

From: Qie Niangao All of which nicely supports my claim that whitelist banlines should require the landowner to be certified in their actual effects, and lack thereof.
Banlines seem to be another great application for JWZ's patented audio-cock technology.

That is if you are running the new client or one of the newer variants. I was anti ban line for so long, but with the new state of paranoia in SL, they seem to be a necessity.

From: Milla Janick You can barely see them even when they're on. The first warning you get is often when you start bouncing off them. This is true, unless they are your next door neighbor on a small parcel and you can see them through your living room alpha wall. Kudos to LL for finally making the view optional.

From: Chris Norse Why do you think you should be able to come on my land if I don't want you there? Do I think that, Chris? All I said: when you argue with privacy, there is none that ban lines give. The only thing banlines do is showing red stripes and keeping avatars out. But not their cameras. So, what I think is that banlines give a feeling of privacy that is not present. In SL I do not need to lock my house, cause nobody can take anything I built on my place, so I must not be afraid of thieves. But no banline and no orb can give you the privacy not to be watched at what you do. From: someone Why should it matter if I am online or not? Well, for many great private sim barons it's part of the rules. What does it matter, if avatars are in my house (if in SL I need a roof above the head and walls that make funny things to camera control) or on my ground? I can only notice it in the traffic of my parcel, nothing else. If they want to come and watch, what I built ... that would make me proud, if they like my creativity. They cannot take anything that I do not want them to take and they cannot leave anything (if I don't want). My experience: I live in great privacy without banlines and orbs, cause avatars that see me at home tp away in 99% of the cases, even before I say "Hi" to them. The leaving 1% are fun. From: someone I pay for it. Why shouldn't I be able to post my land as no trespassing if I so choose? My question is: do you get, what you want. You surround your property by red lines. What you get: nobody comes in. What you also get: they get curious about the reason and will watch. From: someone Banlines are the only way to do this. No, you could write it in the "About Land" window, you could set up a sign, you could build in a way that makes clear this is private. The good people (90 - 99%) will stay outside. The bad people will laugh and watch you, getting curious about what you might hide behind your banlines. For me banlines simply offer a false feeling of privacy. From: someone I totally agree, camera movements need to stop at a parcel edge. That would make it impossible to watch a movie that you put on a screen on a separated small parcel with extra media data. I think cameras are constrained by walls and phantom rotating lights far to much, there should not be more limits to watch the beauty and creativity of SL. From: someone It all comes down to principle. You believe in theft, I do not. I think it's opposite. I leave my parcels open and even let others build and script. Doing that two years now, there were not more than about a dozen cases, when I returned a few objects. My parcels might sometimes be uses as sandboxes, but I don't mind, cause 99% of the avatars clean up and are happy and sometimes say thanks to be able to build in privacy. Nobody took anything from me all that time. So I do not need banlines and I do not need orbs. But I often see avatars standing near banlines, and when I switch on the crosses to show camera positions, it's amazing that there are so many cameras within the banlines. So, yes, you have every right to use banlines. But they will only attract some more voyeurs. The only way to get privacy in SL is a private sim with no neighbouring sims. And even there you can still be visited by Controller Linden, who might ask you, why you are doing what you are doing on a mature sim. But back to Zindra: Those who are using banlines now were the lucky, who got their land already, while the Lindens send the others around to look for free parcels. Zindra is not officially opened for business, that would be after July 20th. Maybe long after that date. Today Zindra is an area that right not is in the process to be shared between those who applied. It's just not fair when those being a bit luckier make it harder for the rest to find their spot in Zindra, while the Lindens ask to look for more free spots.

Banlines suck.. If I see banlines, I get curious on whats going on behind them ^_ ^
Thus you move your camera inside and check on the people that are there. What they are doing, why.. etc etc etc..
Ban lines are very rude in my eyes. They give you a feeling that sucks. Most of the time you can get trapped between banlines (at the end of a sim for example) And you need to TP away to another spot on the sim. Its a bit chaos.
I like those systems with a ''warning'' Like.. ''you will be ejected in 60 seconds if you dont leave this parcel''
It gives you a warning and you know what to expect, also you can fly ''over'' the parcel, if you are exploring the sim or continent (zindra) without being bounced back by the ugly ''No Entry'' banlines.
SO you dont put out banlines for privacy, because its SL, you dont HAVE privacy here, there is always somebody camming on you if they see banlines..
Then why do you have them anyway?? LEts just.. remove them okay??
