True enough, but academic at this point I think. I'm pretty sure nobody created an alt just to screw with Pdipstickity. His paranoia and ample supply of vanity led to the creation of this "deliberate malice" situation out of whole cloth.

I firmly believe that Second Life is comprised of about 1000 Americans, about the same amount of UKers and 2000 from other Countries.

The rest you see are bots or alts. Many of which are Linden alts trying to make the grid look somewhat inhabited.

Yes, that was tongue in cheek but I do subscribe to a simillar thought on this that just has more numbers.. but not by tons.

Yes!! I had a tiny that kept sending me harassing IMs. Then they started rezzing crap on my lawn.. I was going crazy until I remembered I could delete the account.

OK - I was mistaken when I said I was done with this thread. I hoped once I said I knew who the owner of duplicitous alt was it would fade away, but maybe you guys are building a hideaway should the unthinkable happen to the Undying Thread.

IBTL I wanted to say three things.

1. Lindal - Thanks so much for saying it better than I could have.

2. To repeat that of course the alt isn't Brann. I never thought it was, even when I was negotiating with the duplicitous alt to find her real identity, but it was a black joke that went sour.

3. To say again that I am certain I know who was the main who sent her alt (which I never said was specially made for the purpose, but appeared to be an old "pleasure model" of hers) to try to seduce me and it WAS done with malice, in an attempt to discredit me because I had stepped on her toes publicly in a few other threads. I am not paranoid, just vengeful.

The worst thing that has happened to Pep is not that he has lost the taste for the Forums, but that he has nearly lost the friendship of someone very dear to him in sl. Hopefully, even though she has now seen his underlying character as apparently pompous, bigoted, racist, sexist, and mean-spirited - especially to foreigners, which is a surprising charge given that he has just come out of an eight month partnership with a delightful French girl - she seems willing to forgive him.

Head games with alts suck. There are many legitimate, and even fun and harmless, reasons for creating alts. But using them to play head games with others may be the cardinal sin of virtual worlds.

Aside from the immediate pain and anguish such games cause the victim(s), there is a subtle and long-lasting fallout: trust pollution. Each time this sin is committed, every victim, and everyone who knows about it, is just a little more wary, a little less inclined to trust the next person they meet. Is the new acquaintance genuine? Or another one of <insert name here's> alts? The very situation that the OP described. It is an insidious, creeping plague that affects the virtual society at all levels.

Think about that the next time you contemplate making an alt to play a joke on someone, or to discredit someone, or to get revenge on someone.

I use alts, and so I have experienced the temptation to stay "under cover" and play with my friends a little. But I make it a rule always to tell anyone I meet who knows me, "Hey, I am Lindal's alt".

I Mute anyone I catch playing alt head games with me. I ban them from any property I own. Immediate, no argument, no appeal. More than that: They go on my List. I have found, like the late Robert A, Heinlein, that my List is highly effective. Like him, I never do anything to those unfortunate enough to be on it. But it is amazing how many of them drop off the List in short order. Illness, accident, misfortune, death...they come quickly.
It's not a long List. Those on it know who they are.

/me waves cheerfully to them. Y'all make sure your affairs are in order, 'K?

(I will probably regret that I keep this thread alive but I think Lindal has some very good points)

I do think that alts can be used to create trouble and harm, and that it makes people wary. I also think that the OP was overreacting and that he was wrong about an over-a-year-old avatar wanting to “seduce” him. I read the first post as that this alt was made deliberatly to "get" him.(edited because I was tired and wanted to make things clearer) (I have to stop editing this now, I don't understand what i mean anymore)

And to file an AR… he would probably write it very well: “This woman, Sir, was attempting to mislead me in a malicious way… I want to see her and all her other alts/accounts suspended and her name hang out in shame” ***I was trying to be funny here***

To immediately lash out against a new person and accusing them of being alts created to pull a joke/hurt people is not a good idea. As I said in another post, sometimes people are what they appear to be, a total stranger. They will act the same way, deny they are an alt of XXX, and accuse the suspicious part of being paranoid and just leave. They will do the same either if they have never meet you before or if they are out to make mischief.

I think people are able of fooling others a short time, but they would not be able to hide their intentions over longer time. So, I would say that in cases where you suspect that this is a scam, act polite but a bit distant. Let the other have the initiative. Let them do the talking. Listen well. Refuse to do things that you think could get you into trouble. (If you have a girlfriend in SL and are hit on by another woman, you would be very careful. It can be your girlfriend’s alt).

I may be a very stupid person, but I believe that people are innocent until found guilty.

So, I would say that in cases where you suspect that this is a scam, act polite but a bit distant. Let the other have the initiative. Let them do the talking. Listen well. Refuse to do things that you think could get you into trouble. (If you have a girlfriend in SL and are hit on by another woman, you would be very careful. It can be your girlfriend’s alt). I may be a very stupid person, but I believe that people are innocent until found guilty. Melancholic? Yes maybe I am. It’s past midnight my timezone and I need to go to bed.
