If this were true, authors would not be able to write in a clear female voice. It's not hard for a man to assume the guise of a woman and neither is it difficult for a female to assume the guise of a male. All they need to do is get past the obvious stupid stereotypes, such as acting like a dumb bimbo if you're female and like an arrogant beer-swilling dullard if you're a male. As far as I'm concerned on the internet Men are Men, Women are Men, and Children are FBI agents in disguise. Nothing is real, and there's no reason to believe otherwise. Still, some people seem to be silly enough to think, "Hurr! If it has tits ingame it's a chick! Hurrrrr!"

I used MorphVox or something like that as a joke for a couple of DJ events I did. One was a gender bending event and the other was a female rocker thing we did. Came as female and when I started talking through the voice changer...lol.....everyone died.

It would not fool anyone who actually listens, but was very good for a laugh. Made me sound like I was huffing helium.

I wonder how many horny SL studs would continue to hit on the escorts and other assorted sluts if they could see the fat 50-something hairy naked chappie typing away on a semen-stained keyboard on the other side.

meh, doesn't bother me at all. If a guy wants to go to that much trouble to pretend he's a girl, Im gonna treat him like a girl. I normally do anyway. Even if i know the person is not the same gender as their avvie, I treat their avvie as the avvie appears.

People don't really have a social response to characters in books - and if it's a play or film, there's a real woman doing the reading, who will add the extra things herself. As I said, it's a very subconscious thing - you won't notice obviously that something is wrong, but you might not (for example) be persuaded of something by someone who's using a mismatched set of gender signals, where you would have been if they'd been using the matched ones.



There are actually quite a lot of real women on SL. Maybe not the majority (as some people have occasionally claimed) but they are definately out there.

Interestingly, when I've been looking at profiles recently, it seems almost as many male avatars as female ones have RL sections saying things like 'SL and RL are separate', or 'Don't ask' etc.

Anyway, I can't see RL ID is a big deal, especially as it might be fake. I talk to people about what I see and do in SL, mainly, I'm rooted on it! That's what SL is to me.

Um. You're saying people are thinking they've been persauded of things, or decided whether to spend the evening with, or recieved diplomacy from.. Harry Potter? And Harry Potter actually did those things rather than the same people making up what he would do (which can always appear to have an emotional effect, because it's a feedback loop)?

I have three avatars. I haven't used two of them in months, but I did have all three on at the same time once (my that was a strain, and I can barely get on now with one avatar). The point? I had accidently left one avatar "typing" while I went to one of the other screens. When I saw that I started all of them typing. hehe. I was talking with myself, and all typing at the same time. Granted, it looked like it took me forever to write, but it does take some people forever to write "Hello, mak sex now?" Sometimes it looks like 10 minutes have passed and they have just written something short like that when everything stops and words appear.

I'm sure thousands of people would if they could.

Furthermore, JK Rowling is female, and she does male voices excellently in her books. I don't know what you're trying to say here, but it sounds like you're grasping at straws. There is no way to discern a person's gender through a text based or virtual medium, unfortunately.

Besides, I don't know why people get so out of sorts about people playing their opposite gender on the Internet. After all, it's been done for literally a millennia in the real world, and continues to be done...with very convincing results too.

I have, in the CARP sim. Guy runs around with a title saying he has a tiny one. I've never actually attempted to see it, though.
