Yesterday, I ran into someone who I figured was a female. It turns out it was a male, and it was quite interesting that I never ran into such a thing before.

Good thing I don't hit on people in SL or I could be very confused!

Seriously though, they sent me the software they use, and I went to the hangout to test it out. It was quite funny. I loaded a new shape, a new skin, and some long blonde hair, and a voice modulator away anyone who heard voice saw a 100% woman.

Really makes you think about the people in SL, huh? They could not be all that they could be..

If anyone wants me to demonstrate this later, ill be on around 4:30EST or so ;)

I've never heard of a voice modulator that actually fooled anyone. This is a marvel of the Information Age then.

Modvox? or something like that?

If you have a high pitched voice to start with you can come out as a passible female voice. 90% of the time it's a easy to tell what they are doing ... which is why it is rare.

And this looks like the making of a good Friday thread.

My opinion of men playing women: I don't care. They're the ones walking around with boobies; if they don't want me to make a pass them, don't play a female. As far as I am concerned, I'm chatting with a woman, dancing with a woman or trying to talk a woman out of their clothes :) He's the one having cyberz with a guy. If it's what he wants, kudos for having the balls to do it ... so to speak.

At last; someone with sense to counteract the hysterics this sort of thread usually attracts. Yes, this will probably develop into the Friday Thread. I shall observe it's progress with interest.

I will try to be there I have been thinking about this since I read about voice modulators a while back. Cant wait to hear it. I think a guy that can use a female avatar must be a blast!

~oh will she be in the buff too?

That's what that was all about last night? :p

Coughs, sneezes, giggles, etc might sound quite unnatural after modulation though, as well as background noise?

You wouldn't even really need a modulator, there's enough overlap in frequency between males and females for most people to learn to convincingly sound like the opposite sex.

She will not ;) Only my RL self is!

Seriously though, sneezes and coughs sound real, but background noise must be avoided as it is suspiciously distorted.

The best part of this good news is that finally all that crap about needing to use voice to prove one's gender is obsolete.

Now, if only technology could filter the lithp from my typing.

I figure if they want to chat endlessly and include rl stuff, they probably are a real girl.

If they want sex right away, prob a guy.

6 month old AVIs with nothing in the profile? I never talk to them.

That's only so's they can ask the infallably female identifier question posed down through the ages - 'Does my bum look big in this?'

When will men figure out that there can be no pause whatsoever before the proper answer? And try to avoid "deer in headlights" look.

When I had 'voice' turned on, the voices sounded real. But I think I've heard people using voice changers while broadcasting at events in SL. I heard one performer, not a singer, but a spoken word performer, who sounded like they were using a bad male-to-female voice changer. Also I think I've heard live presenters using voice changers to enhance their voice without changing its gender.

One streaming internet radio station has regular announcemts promoting the station, sometimes in a female and sometimes in a male voice. The female voice sounds natural but the male voice sounds like a deepened version of the female one.

My RL has played about with a voice changer but NOT in connection with SL or meee!
My estuarine Essex-Girl twang sometimes gets disguised in typed chat by me typing in Midlandy things like ''eyup" and "m'dooks", though!

Wait till you bump into 3 people, say a man, a woman and a wolf, and as you get chatting to them you start to wonder if they are all being played by one RL. The clue to watch for is if none of them ever type at the same time!

I never hesitate and always respond immediately with "No, those pants don't make your bum look big. Your huge bum makes your bum look big."

There are no genetic markers of gender; but there are chromosonal markers (obvisouly). It's more likely the case that this lady has just tested positive for excess testosterone or something for one of two reasons; she suffers a hormone imbalance, or she has taken masses of steroids and HGH. I think the latter to be the most likely.

Yep, that's my response. My husband's is, "Trick question deserves and honest answer, you are just plain fat. The pants aren't going to fix that." Oddly enough, I've never asked him that question.

Your subconscious can generally hear "through" a voice changer, because there are other things it knows to look for. Women and men use slightly different emphasis on words and slightly different vocabularies. Of course voice changers can't add these because they require understanding the meaning of what's being said. These can be learned, but often they aren't. Although you won't immediately say, "gee, she's really a man" (or "he's really a woman!";), you won't have the same natural reactions you would to the same meaning expressed naturally.
