Good luck on your endeavors. I don't really know that anyone could give good advice on picking out a spot of land for you. There are just way too many variables and there is no way to know your tastes. Keep us apprised of your progress.

Personally, for mainland I don't think it would matter which sim. You can buy in an empty sim today but tomorrow, some one could surround you with builds you might hate.

<snip> and have just rezzed and finished my first chair at ivory <snip>

<snip>this building stuff is fasinating and very time consuming. i really admire and respect those that make such great detailed prims. <snip>

Congratulations on your first build! Oy, you should see what my first build (if one can call it that) looked like. :o

I agree, building is fascinating...and addictive. Some people in SL, even those without businesses, love building and do that the majority of their time in SL. As far as time-consuming, that too, although the more you build and the more techniques you learn, the faster some things will go.

As I said in an earlier post, I am huge on taking classes. I never intended to open a store, just wanted to know a little bit about building. For close to a year I took at least one class a day and some days up to 3 classes. Other people learn in different ways.

The interesting thing I found about building was that it was sort of like learning the "tricks" at a magic show. I watch a magician and "know" they really aren't cutting someone in half or levitating them, etc. and try to figure out "Now how did they do that?" For me it was a bit like that with building. I would see (and purchased) these amazing items that were scripted to do all kinds of things and think "How in the world did the builder do that?" As I learned more about building, I would use a script in class that did that very thing I pondered about and then think...ahhhh-HA! So THAT'S how they did that! :)

Enjoy learning and building! And good luck on finding that spot of land - it's out there. :)

And then they leave a month later :p

One of my "hobbies" in SL is watching the changes on my home sim. Amazing to me how short a time some people stay.

yes i know what u mean by wondering how did they build that??? :) i thought the same thing while learning at ivory. i was like ... hmm so thats how they do that. and im only at the beginner level . it is like learning the secrets to magic trick . :) and yes i am so slow cause i dont remember where or witch button does what . and i have to open my notes and read them . but i can see where it is addictive. now i just need to find a piece of land hopefully by water and its protected waters. so i can build and not have my stuff disappear in 10 minutes .

Jack, if you'd like a place to build while you're looking for your own land, I can invite you to my land group for a few weeks and give you a LM to my building platform. I can't remember how many prims I have free - not as many as your own 512 plot will have - but it will give you some room to rez and experiment with things while you're looking for a place of your own.

Just let me know if you're interested.

thanx Nic i appreciate it . i can just use a local sandbox for the time. i was just complaining about ivory only lets your prim stay rezed about 10 min and when your a noob like me . and trying to figure stuff out . 10 goes to quick :) . your other comment just reminded me of another question. when i get this 512 plot on mainland. i have noticed that there are some with more prims and some less? i thought a 512 plot had a certain amount of prims period... and 1024 certain amount and period. but can this very? and if so what is considered alot of prims for a 512 piece of land and what is considered to little amount?

All 512 plots have 117 prims, a 1024 is twice the size of a 512, so it has twice the prims (234) and so on. I refer to this chart often: http://secondlife.com/land/pricing.php

Since you mentioned looking around Bay City, that may be what is confusing you on prims. Bay City sims are "double prims" meaning exactly that - you get 234 prims on a 512 plot instead of 117 and so forth. That's one reason it is soooo much more expensive than regular mainland. I *think* there may be some older areas of mainland that are double prim as well; some of the longer-term residents can help me out here.

Except for the double-prim sims, that chart I posted the link to will give you all the prim and pricing info per size of land.

I live on the Warbluster sim, which is a water sim protected by two Linden oceans. Right now there are several 512 plots for sale at decent prices. Even though it is a water sim, many people build a platform level with the water if they wish to live at ground level. I live and build 1700 meters in the sky. Just another place to check out.

I'm not sure why water sims were initially created but as you most likely saw, many people build a platform and then create their home or store, etc. on that so the ambiance (to me) is like living on a lake. I love water (used to be a synchronized swimmer) so I've always wanted to create a lil underwater "getaway" but just haven't gotten around to it.

Also, like myself, I live way up in the sky so whatever is below me doesn't really matter. I have lived on that particular sim for about a year and a half now and have seen it change over time, as mainland property will do.

Yeah, those just went up recently and I hate them too. And those are particularly weird because they criss-cross somehow. The last time I contacted a neighbor who put in ban lines which, at that time, was between two parcels of land I owned, it turned into a rather nasty exchange here on the forums so since these don't obstruct my view and I'm up in the sky anyway, decided to just not deal with contacting the land owners. They'll probably be gone soon anyway (the other person was there about 3 weeks...lol).

Not sure about the age verify thing because I'm age verified as is my partner and we both see the ban lines. But then the age verification thing has been kind of weird too in the past.

Probably not a bad idea, especially buying your first property. I've considered buying some of the land (again) on the sim but kind of waiting to see what happens myself with the ratings.

Gratz on the continued building and you're most welcome :)

Why would you need a fire hydrant in a water sim?

Five bucks can go a long way at Mickey D's with their dollar menu. I suggest you try Wendy's instead. Where I live you can get a nice, small salad with a tomato on it for a buck twenty-five.

I am a big fan of Wendy's Jr. Bacon Cheese and it's only 99 cents. Think they take $L?

It depends. On mainland, you can generally terraform the land +/- 4 meters from its "rest" position, which is wherever Linden Lab put it when they originally created the region. If you own a private island (really own, not rent), you can specify how you want the region to look by giving Linden Lab a terrain map in .RAW format. You can also terraform a private estate +/- 100 meters. If you rent a parcel on an estate, how much terraforming you can do is up to the owner. Some don't allow any. Others will do it for you, if they approve of your idea. Still others allow you to terraform your parcel yourself, with varying limits on how much.

There have been numerous schemes invented to work around terraforming limitations. One's already been mentioned: Rez yourself a big flat prim and use it as an "artificial island". Or you can abandon the ground entirely and put up a skybox (the general term for any airborne structure).

If you don't like the scenery, you can make your own. Some people live in a giant sphere, and project whatever view they want onto the inside surface. That's really cool if you want to live on a space station or a starship. Or you can put your house at the bottom of the sea. I've seen several cool underwater homes. One looked like a wrecked power yacht from the outside, but was a very nice home inside. Another was a cave hollowed out of the sea bottom and roofed over with prim "ground".

I'm thinking when you came to my home sim you were probably focused on the property for sale which just has tiny little islands with FOR SALE signs, a palm tree and chair on it. To see how people use the platform idea, go back and on the far eastern side is a large home with swimming pool and other amenities. The back of the house faces the open Linden ocean.

The foundation is just a prim or prims the size needed for the home then it can be textured however. The home of which I'm speaking currently is textured with grass, during the winter they had snow. When my original idea was to have my store there, my prim had a sand texture on it.

Another reason some people enjoy the water sims is if they own boats. Several of my neighbors over the last year have had yachts (one still does) and various sailboats next to their homes, then they can just sail a short distance and be in the ocean.

Speaking of interesting homes, not sure if you saw this one while there, but it's hovering above one of the few areas of this sim that has a natural beach and shoreline...

First, here is what the parcel looked like when I owned it, looking out toward the ocean. The yacht is my neighbors:

Then I sold off most of my land on the sim (which about killed me emotionally but helped financially) as I needed to not be paying as much in monthly tier. Here is the same plot with the new resident's home:

So here we have someone who owns beach, waterfront land, and lives in a Steampunk Airship just hovering above the land. Go figure! (I went to the designer's store of the airship and it is niiiiiceeee inside and includes just about everything one would need: furnishings complete with animated furniture, security system, TV, can't recall everything....around 256 prims or so...AND...it flies!!!! I just may have to try that out sometime when I acquire more land.
