I've met many, from SL and other online venues. I even hosted a party at my house with a bunch of online friends from a group, that it was the first time any of us had met in real. It was a weekend bash, we had a great time. I've met friends from SL, one on one, like Kaimi, and Maureen, or a bunch, like at SLCC. And yes it's instant friendship, instant connection as Lindal said, because you already felt that way before you met in real, and nothing much would change those feelings, physical appearance is totally irrelevant. But lovers just somehow seem different, and I've never done that aspect so was just curious about that, if a lack of physical attraction would make a difference, change the love relationship, to something else if you found you just weren't attracted, in rl. I agree that a romantic meeting would need to include an RL physical attraction. I can't see any romance continuing in RL without it. _____________________

Here's the thing though: I can't imagine wanting to sleep with someone with whom I wouldn't also want to spend (nonsexual) time. So it's not like I'm being charitable: if they are there, in my bed, they are there because I LIKE them, not just because I want to have sex with them. There is a storage shed in the back yard. /me imagines Brenda's lovers stacked up in her storage shed like so many pieces of spare lumber . . . _____________________

...I agree that a romantic meeting would need to include an RL physical attraction. I can't see any romance continuing in RL without it. I haven't met an SL lover in RL, myself. But I HAVE spoken to several people who've done so...and in each case, they tell the same story. Instant connection, instant attraction. I suppose there are some "ewwww...no" meetings as well, but none of my friends have reported such. _____________________

It can happen. I know several couples who have met through online venues, not SL, and are quite happy together. It depends on the people involved. Online romance is not a route i would ever take, but there is nothing wrong with it if that's what you choose.

I suspect that in most cases, before SLovers decide to take it real, they at least exchange photos, so the meeting shouldn't be a complete shock!
Still, I know a woman who met her SLover IRL and the chemistry simply did not work. It's definitely a risk. But there's also the possibility it will work, so there's the concomitant risk of passing by something that could be great. |

Google 'pigeon sex experiment' and you'll see that pigeons physically respond to a purely virtual computer representation of another bird... which is kind of interesting. I remember some research done in this area.
Of course, there's no way the real and the virtual pigeon can actually mate. They escalated slowly -- emails, then phone conversations, exchange of RL photos, etc. So when they did meet in RL, there were no unpleasant surprises. It would be, I admit, a shock to expect to be met at the airport by Prince Charming and find Mister Toad at the gate instead. (And vice versa...this scenario would be just as shocking to a gentleman, I imagine.) {EDIT: To answer directly, no.
