From: Amaranthim Talon ....... Realizing of course that our skin colors are merely choices in SL- and obviously not looking to compare this with real discrimination issues in RL. Just thinking abut how RL attitudes reflect even in such non-standard SL modes. Hmmmmmmm. It could be that to be discriminated against because of our choices should feel worse than being discriminated against because of something we have no control over.

I even said something to the effect of it shouldn't matter since the person (me) is still the same person regardless of the color I choose to be.

From: Amaranthim Talon I have a friend that won't see me when I am the deamoness- I think it offends his Christian beliefs. Another who also doesn't like me like that says it's because dance venues are some how marred to him if I show up inhuman. But last night one friend greeted me in IM by asking if I was over my green disease and if so would I come dance? That inspired the question that I then posed to another friend at random and his opinion was it was pretty but he would not like to make love with odd colored avies (that wasn't part of an invite, btw- just as part of the answer - apparently dancing was not a problem to him). did you drop "green disease" friend and "marred dance experience" friend like a particularly heavy stone? And while we're on that theme, they sound like precisely the kind of ignorant cretins I would like to drop a particularly heavy stone on. "dance venues are somehow marred". Haha. Whoever said that is so up himself he must be inside-out by now. (no offence if they are good friends of yours, Amaranthim, but they deserve scorn for their ignorance.)

Well you know Max..I think I gave them something to think about. Green disease friend I think realized towards the end of the convo that I didn't much care for that view - just a feeling- will have to let you know if it comes up again what he says. The dance friend may have noticed that over time I dance less often with him and that I only meet him if I happen to be human. I have turned him down a couple times because I wasn't going to change- we sort of came to the mutual unspoken contract if you will that I will be as I wish and he is free to not want to dance with me like that - I can't control other's feelings - hell I can barely control my own But they are both people I have appreciated prior to my delving into the non-human avies so I will give all time to think over their rationale and maybe they will learn something too. I love SL

Amaranthim too bad someone would even say that to you. Actually I hope you don't get over your "green disease" nor your purple, yellow, periwinkle, red and my favorite...blue!

From: Amaranthim Talon So.. I have gotten creative with skin color and avies and such lately and have noticed a "trend" among some friends - couple guys I know have voiced the opinion they don't care to dance with me when I am either inhuman or of a different color than acceptable for humans - Since Super Thread here seems a nice little play ground for us and this isn't a question on how to anything in SL - how do you guys feel about it? Here is my poll questions: 1) Do you wear any not-human color skin, i.e. green, blue red, etc? 2) Have you ever felt anyone has treated you differently because of wearing skin of such colors? 3) If someone you know won't associate with you when you are "colorful", do you change to accommodate their preferences? Realizing of course that our skin colors are merely choices in SL- and obviously not looking to compare this with real discrimination issues in RL. Just thinking abut how RL attitudes reflect even in such non-standard SL modes. Good morning all! /me grabs a handful of everything which was on that fantastic spread posted above!!! ok here's my answers: 1. The only non-human skin I've worn thus far is a "bee" skin I just got. It's a yellowish hue, with bee eye-makeup. 2. Nobody in SL treated me different. However, my husband happened to walk by as I was in this skin (and corresponding Bee outfit) and wondered what on earth I was wearing! 3. I would not change to accommodate someone else's tastes. Why should I? Maybe I AM a bee?

From: Sling Trebuchet It could be that to be discriminated against because of our choices should feel worse than being discriminated against because of something we have no control over. This is completely backwards, and I dont' think it holds up to much examination. It was probably one of those spur-of-the-moment statements... I do those too. Something you have chosen to do, be, or appear can be re-chosen/reversed/un-chosen. Therefore, if you don't like the CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR OWN DECISIONS, you have the power to fix it. If I CHOOSE to wear a big foam cowboy hat (of the type that might be seen at a football game) to the office, I will get disapproving looks in the elevator and conference room. That's not discrimination, and it would be absurd to suggest so. If I don't like the CONSEQUENCES OF MY CHOICE I can CHOOSE to take off the hat. Most likely, I chose to wear the hat intentionally for the attention it draws. Being put at a completely arbitrary, un-natural, man-made, unfounded disadvantage because of something over which you have NO control is unjustice. Your suggestion is, essentially, to say that it is worse to be avoided because you have garlic breath than it is to be denied an RL job soley because of your RL skin color.

1) Do you wear any not-human color skin, i.e. green, blue red, etc?
Of course! Metallic, Purple, Drow, Brown Fur, etc. Why come to a 'fantasy' world, and only be a normal human?
2) Have you ever felt anyone has treated you differently because of wearing skin of such colors?
At times. Usually positive. I just don't go to strictly 'human' places. In fact, it took me quite a long time to finally visit the hangout. I think I was Drow the first time, and when I saw everyone looked and dressed as people in RL, I quickly got myself a real 'human' skin (my 1st) to fit in when and if I passed by. Didn't want to annoy others with my constant changing. I quickly found out some were 'worse' than me, LOL. Still, I'm glad it made me buy a beige freckled skin, I've grown to like it.
3) If someone you know won't associate with you when you are "colorful", do you change to accommodate their preferences?
I might change for a particular place - to fit with the decor/ambiance, but if anyone told me they wouldn't 'associate' with me for whatever reason, I would say, "I understand", then flush them out of my life. How boring and unimaginative of them.
Good Morning!
/me grabs a huge mug of hot coffee.

From: Rioko Bamaisin You know what this thread needs? Remedies to stop coughing before my brains come flying out of my eye sockets. TIA. It soothes an irritated throat and relieves chest congestion and phlegm. The bad news: it tastes terrible -- it really does -- but if you have a persistant cough, it's worth a try. * 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper * 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger * 1 Tablespoon honey * 1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar * 2 Tablespoons water Mix and take by the teaspoon. http://www.pitt.edu/~cjm6/sp99cough.html
