Scylla, trying to make logical arguments with an irrational, illogical liar is a no win situation. I applaud your willingness to believe, but in the face of insurmountable evidence, he will merely substitute his lies and continue in his rut.
Your delusions know no boundaries, do they?

Pep (You have no charges, much less evidence; but before you attempt to establish a case against me for anything, let's hear *your* defence against expressing wishes of pain and death by cancer in a foul-mouthed fashion which should see you being shunned by any right-thinking person.)

Anyway, I'm curious when people will stop feeding a particular, sarcastic forum troll so that not *every* thread on the forum is him/her and his/her detractors going at it? I'm sure the person in question is having great fun riling everyone up, and has essentially ground the forum to a halt because everyone feels it is so gosh-darned important that they 'counter him/her at every turn -- but enough already. We get it.

It's not just this one person who is doing in this forum, but all who take the bait and respond (and, by extension, myself for posting this very post).

If you don't like that person, IGNORE. If not for you, then for everyone else.

Think of a forum as a gathering, perhaps a dinner party. No one likes a boor at a party, and no one certainly likes a brawl at one. This is a brawl in every room right now. Stop it already.

That's all.
You're doing it yourself now, kid. :p

Pep (Why don't you go light some fireworks, or some other such activity that blows the credibility of your role playing completely out of the water.)

Mari, I don't fuss with this thread anymore, but the adult adoption thread is essentially brawl-less and good for a giggle :)

It's all pretty unreadable. The more I think about it, the more I think it's time to head on out. It gets to be a pain to wade through all the replies to a certain forum poster on every thread. Thassal.

QFT. IMHO, Pep is having fun. He is ROLEPLAYING. For all I know, he may be also playing Jumpy, the only other roleplaying forumite who comes to mind. By my lights, the "Pep" character is not good RP, because he isn't clear enough RP that everyone knows what he's doing, but what can you do.

Lately I've tried some interactions with Pep solely for my private amusement, which actually worked and was a little fun, but isn't worth the time. (But, I thought my pot-kettle setup-and-dunk in this thread was inspired! Where's my applause??)

My two cents: ignore Pep or play along, but just to me, it is definitely not worth getting upset over someone's RP. I wish folks didn't take him so seriously - cf his tag and byline, his typist does not take "Pep" seriously!

There are replies, Mari, and there are replies . . .

I entirely agree that the lengthy exchanges of pure vituperation are exhausting and annoying. I skim, when I read them at all.

But there are a couple of points I'd like to make (and Rhonda, I address these to you too):

-- the person in question is not a "troll." He is a long-standing and sometimes quite popular member of this community. I refer you to a thread a while back about whose posts are "must-reads": his name figured prominently. And he is not a troll because he DOES often bring to this forum some wit and insight: he is not always merely provocative, although I confess he has been trying my patience of late . . .

-- Because he is not a troll, his posts are frequently taken quite seriously by readers of this forum. And as such, when he says something that can be challenged on the basis of, oh, for instance, overt sexism, he SHOULD be challenged. I think it's bad policy to simply ignore someone who DOES have an audience when he spouts reprehensible nonsense. Let him speak, by all means, but force him to defend the indefensible, so it is clear that what he is saying is simply wrong. To allow this kind of nonsense to go unchallenged is really a kind of silent consent.

-- I don't believe that collectively "ignoring" someone is a legitimate response. It is too much like political blackballing or ostracism for my taste. I think that people have every right to make an individual decision about whether they wish to hear him or not, but public calls to collectively ignore and not quote are really just another way of silencing someone.

What I WILL agree to is to not quote him when he engages in personal attacks on others. And, I should say too, that I will apply that principle to attacks aimed against him.

It may be that you find you need to ignore me because I respond to him. So be it, although I would be very sorry to hear that you find ME that annoying. But the whole public shunning thing leaves me acutely uncomfortable, on a number of levels.

It is not even photo shopped. Did all the makeup and facial build up themselves so that it looks completely natural, and then goes out in parts of Tokyo dressed in normal everyday clothes. Freaks some people totally out. :)

Out of the mouths of babes...

Thank you, Mari.

But please don't leave. I'm thinking of the scene in Star Trek, "The Trouble With Tribbles". A huge barfight breaks out, but one man, the Trader, is oblivious to the brawl. He adroitly wends his way between the combatants from table to table, downing everyone's drinks while they are busy committing mayhem.

More of us should be like that. Ignore the commotion, and just get on with business.

I must disagree. He most definitely *is* as troll. His posts are designed annoy. To take threads on useless tangents. His primary tool is harassment. Once he finds a way to harass someone, he's relentless. He picks at people constantly and in different ways until he finds and opening, and when he does, he exploits it as best he can.

He's a truly sick individual who takes great enjoyment out of enraging others.

Can you look at what he's doing to Rhonda and think otherwise?

I'm sorry, but that he's able to keep some people engaged and turning a blind eye to his overall nastiness does not mean that he's not a troll. Rather, it means that he's a particularly good one.

Pep and his fan club are ruining this forum.

You can ignore him, and everyone who insists on replying to his idiot drivel, but it doesn't help that much, the threads end up derailed into nonsense and ruined.

Pep certainly is a troll. He is not smart, witty or funny. Running someone's post through Word's grammar check and making fun of it is not "wit".

He brings nothing of value to this forum, and greatly detracts from it by derailing useful threads.

I try. It gets thrown in my face every day in every thread. every post I make is followed by a troll. Some times two or three at a time. Followed by people quoting the trolls.

If we all agree to ignore it, will it truly go away?

Ugh.

How did I manage to suddenly come across as a CHAMPION of Pep?

However we want to define "troll," I am going to stand firm, at least, on my final point: I don't think it is legitimate to call for a collective ignoring/silencing of someone on this (or any other forum).

I'm going to call the sexist crap when I see him using it. But I WILL try to avoid merely knee-jerk responses to deliberate provocation on his part.

Right, although I don't think Jumpy. Jumpy's character is inspired, and his performance verges on an art form. I think Pep comes nearest to Conan Godwin, except Conan had a much broader repertoire of rants and demonstrated a healthy sense of humor about himself without breaking character. He certainly got a lot of people wound up, though.

None of which was why I meant to post. Rather:

Mari, it's a frustrating time for lots of reasons. Do what you think best, but I hope you'll decide to hang out in the Forums for whatever time we have left before they shut the place down. Not that it's much of a silver lining, but as this place deteriorates into all-Pep-all-the-time, it makes the inevitable shuttering that much less disappointing.

I agree with this, but only because collective "ignoring" has no chance of success. Not in a forum as varies as this. Hell, it's not possible even in this thread.

And, of course, your opinion is so much more important than the dozens of others who are sick to death of Pep, and (at this moment) of you... It seems that ordinary politeness would have dictated a cessation of these back and forth posts, as you have been told over and over again, by many posters that they find this ongoing conversation distasteful. At least you could have kept it out of the Thread... Mari's analogy of a brawl at a party is apt.

Bah! I know there's no point to this post, you all will do what you do, having little to no regard for the feelings of others.
