I'm going blind in my old age

I hate many aspects of the viewer UI. One of my greatest joys would be to be able to make letters larger in the local chat history box. I don't have great eyesight.

Like a lot of people, (most ??) I have the local chat window open on the bottom left of the screen. In my case I let it fill 25% of the screen. The letters are too small!

Is there a debug setting or an .xml mod that will increase the point size of the text. ? The same would also be true for groupchat and IM, though not as important.

I feel like gluing a magnifying glass to the bottom left frame of my monitor to see if it helps.

I don't mind putting up with less lines in the chat box if it means the text is bigger.

I have the chat font size set to biggest in preferences if that makes any differences, and my UI size thing whotsit set to 1.4

Surely that item is modifiable, no ? I have eyestrain after a day reading local chat in SL.

Any suggestions gratefully received

Answer to your question

Under the Edit drop down menu - Preferences. General - The UI Size is what you need to adjust. Slide the slider - This will make the words larger to read.

(Yes I am blind as well) One of the first things that go with age.

Hope this helps :)

There was a thread a little while back about a viewer for the visually impaired.

Sorry dino, but that is already at 1.4 and it doesn't help, even maxed out.
I wish the text size in the box was as big as the stuff scrolling up the screen with the Local Chat History box closed....

*sigh*

This thread from last February about sight impairment in SL has quite a few interesting ideas in it:

[Note that Virtual Ability has grown quite a bit since then, and Treasure is still active on these forums. She may be along shortly to update what she said in that thread.]

Using voice can also be a big help to those with eyesight problems, though it is quite a different SL experience.

If it is just the chat that you are looking to increase, there is an option in Preferences - Text Chat tab -- at the top is the Chat Font Size which can be set to 'small', 'medium', or 'large'.

nvm - I noticed that you had changed this for the stuff scrolling on the screen already - and yeah, it does not affect the stuff just in the boxes.

Yes, I've been trying to find a solution to this problem for a year or more now, I've talked to tech types, and messed around with various debug settings that sound about right, but to no avail.. It's sad that I can make my skin any colour of the rainbow, but I can't even change the size of the fonts i the history box by even one size, JUST ONE WOULD DO IT!! I've got old persons eyes!! It's not fair.. I'm only 40 boohoo!!...

I have a MS mouse with a magnifying function - maybe one of these could help solve some of your difficulties. (You may already have one, of course.)

I don't have time to check this out properly at the moment.

Maybe the floater_chat_history.xml file. There's a few places in there that that say 'font="SansSerifSmall"' or "font="SansSerif".

Maybe some of those could be changed to something like "SansSerifLarge".

Time for work.

You should have listened to your mother, she always told you doing that would make you go blind.

Hi, although I don't know all of the assistive technology that could help you, I know that it does exist in SL. Actually, I don't know exactly who to give 'creator credit' to for some of it, so I hesitate to mention certain things specifically. Nothing in particular built into the viewer, although we at Virtual Ability have held classes on how to use the actual assistive programs built into PC's and Macs. They don't always transfer into SL though, and SL does have some things you might be interested in. I'd ask you to contact Gentle Heron, the pres of Virtual Ability for detailed assistance. The other night, I held a gathering on my sim for members of the deaf community in SL and also Virtual Ability group members. One of our members is blind. She came over early, to 'practice', as to where she'd sit, because she is using something, some tool in her computer, that identifies and reads the edit tool in objects for her, to tell her what the object is, it's a chair, sit here, etc. When it was time for the party, she did just fine, I'm sure many don't know she's blind in rl. There are things that can help, please do get in touch. And thanks Nika for pointing out the thread to me.

This appears to be the case. The "SansSerif" can be changed to either "SansSerifLarge" or "SansSerifHuge". It's affecting only the local chat in the chat history, not the size of the chat in the group chats..
